evening dakka,

I'm putting together some CSM and want to model them with the extra CCW since I'll usually be taking that upgrade. rather than do this for every single model, I decided to do a mix of weapons throughout the squad: champion, icon bearer (w/bolter and holstered bolt pistol), 2 special weapons marines (w/holstered bolt pistol), 3 bolter marines (w/holstered bolt pistol), and 3 marines with bolt pistols and chainswords (w/ammo pouch/grenades).

for the bolt pistol/chainsword marines, I wanted to model bolters on them somehow but I was having a tough time finding a good spot. the bolter's really too big to clamp to the thigh (despite all the fluff references). I came up with this idea based on a scene from the space marine video game:

not sure if it really works, though. I also tried orienting the bolter vertically, but it doesn't have a very natural attachment point on the backpack if I do that. what do you think? is there a better way to do it? or should I just not bother modeling bolters for these 3 guys?

yeah, I thought about those two guys. especially the guy with the bolter on his backpack. unfortunately, that doesn't work nearly as well on the standard CSM backpacks. shame, because it's a nifty look (tentacles aside). sculpting shoulder straps might be an option; maybe out of plasticard if I have anything thin enough. you'd think a guy waving around a sword would want his weapons tied down a wee bit better, though...

Well if you read the 40k books some mention weapons magnetized to the armor. So you don't need straps and just attach them whereever you like. Personally i like the concept of adding them to the backpack. But to pull it off like on the DV models you'd probably have to file down the attachtment areas.

And if you want straps, plasticard works just fine. I've done something similar with my devastator sergeant.

hrm, that's a fair point. I haven't looked into filing down the backpack where the bolter would sit vertically. I'll have to check that out tonight; might not be too bad. I do like the strap idea, but I think it would be a bit odd on a model with a dynamic pose (e.g., swinging a sword). food for thought. I'll have to play with it tonight and see what looks good.
