The Last Chancer Who Survived

Okay, so having seen a similar thread about what Necrons can (Or should I say can't) do to the Riptide, and realising I have no experienc with either army, and thus cannot have any helpful imput, I started thinking.
One model that I rarely hear anything about gameplay-wise (apart from the fact that the only character that seems capable of stopping him is Darnath Lysander), is Lord Abaddon of the Black Legion.
As a chaos player, I am very attracted to his ability to murder his way through an entire army's worth of melee, but I have never fielded him before. My Abaddon model is currently being painted, and before I get him back, I would like to ask around Dakka how any of you would go about trying to kill him, and how he can avoid that deadly fate (raking in some free battle Exp for myself before fielding him).
I would have said stick him in a Land Raider with three cheap terminators and a Dark Apostle, but I've never used those models in such a way, so I don't know how effective that would be.

Abaddon's biggest weakness is that he can't be in close combat all the time. Best way to use him is to pop him in a raider with a terminator escort. You're already paying through the nose for him, so you might as well protect your investment.

With as much as he costs, you can get a daemon prince of tzeentch for the same price. He's more powerful against vehicles and close combat, and I'm my opinion is more mobile and tougher to kill.

Ab-A-Don has been determined to be the bully of the playground in 40k (he will take your lunch money). Other than those weird Xenos stoner high schoolers such as Swarm Lord and possibly a DP, he should be able to shrug off anything short of 3 land raiders to the face. he is able to generate large amounts of attacks from his daemon weapon or high Str attacks from the claw. The best way to use him is with large amounts of cultist bodyguards, because many people run him like that, it may be nescessary to get some units behind his unit to hit the cultists and not him, at that point blast him with plasma or AP2. Basically the tau ate geared to kill him, JSJ suits with flamers and plasma with surrounding kroots will ruin his day.

i think abaddin(like aladdin with a b) sounds way better than ab-a-don.....sounds more dark and less cartoony IMHO......
He's a BAD guy, with bad written in his name.....of course you pronounce the word bad when saying his name......ab-a-don sounds goofy like he gaks lollipops, rather than being sinister.....just sayin lol

Generally it's pronounced " Ab-a-don", but with a British accent, so it ends up sounding more daemonic than an american pronunciation. (If you're still unsure of how that sounds, I can make a youtube video of me saying it )

AP2 heavy weapons. Abaddon only has a 4++, and a squad of Devastators armed with Las-cannons could really knock him down a peg. Stay in close combat at all times or with a unit to take wounds for him.

If I was facing that with Abby, I'd try to lascannon him down before he can call a Waaagh, but that's hard to do when he's in a trukk with meganobz. Probably try to tarpit him with something tough but expendable...

mace of redemption are AP4(3 against traitors) right so they would need to be powered up for their 1 turn of fun. At that point who cares if you have grenaded them? Still, to do 4 wounds you would need 19.2 attacks to down him and that is if he is alone. If he has other chumps to take some of the wounds you will likely not kill him on your one turn of AP2 goodness.

The reason for his name (from wikipedia)
The Hebrew term Abaddon (Hebrew: אֲבַדּוֹן, 'Ǎḇaddōn), an intensive form of the word "destruction", appears as a place of destruction in the Hebrew Bible.
In a vision in the New Testament Book of Revelation, an angel called Abaddon is shown as the king of an army of locusts; his name is first transcribed in Greek as "whose name in Hebrew Abaddon" (Ἀβαδδὼν), and then translated as, "which in Greek means the Destroyer" (Apollyon, Ἀπολλύων). The Latin Vulgate, as well as the Douay Rheims Bible, has an additional note (not present in the Greek text), "in Latin Exterminans", exterminans being the Latin word for "destroyer".

4 wounds mean you need to do 24 wounds to him to statistically get by his 2+ save. If he is without a meat shield of cultists, there are a lot of ways to generate 24 wounds against a T5 model. A guide and Doom buffed squad of war walkers with scatter lasers will do it for instance. Most Banner of devestation lists would ahve the amount of shots needed to do it. Honestly a 50 man platoon with FRFSRF and precience would do it.

the thing is he is rarely alone. So first you need to kill off whatever he is with. There are very few ways to kill him while he is with a unit, without first killing the unit. If it is 35 cultists, las guns work great. If it is 5 Termaintors, plasma works good. If it is 20 MoN CSM Battle cannons are your friend.
Once the unit is gone, plasma works pretty well. Automatically Appended Next Post: Lord Yayula wrote:Feed him cheap characters so that he changes into a spawn or DP, that always kills my abaddon. Either that or he rolls enough 1s on his daemon weapon to soften him up
1/6 chance of happening. You are taking a risk though. He could get re-roll armor saves, heal his wounds, or any number of nasty bonuses.

I've bombed Abbaddon with my Halestar. He deepstriked with 8 khorne termies. After a 2 fusion pistols, a blaster, doom and a few shuirken pistols killed off 3 termies. He challanged, i accepted with Archon. Those termies didn't last long against soo much rending and Abbaddon couldn't brake 2++ re-rollable. Every second turn i hit and run out and shot + recharged. On the third turn second charge the great Abbaddon was no more.

Chaos player should have had his champion challenge, so abbadon could wreck the squad. The harlies would wither while the archon couldn't kill that many Termies, hope to cause enough wounds that the archon breaks and runs.

Mace of redemption is the Relic. it's AP2 against chaos marines, so abaddon will have to survive on his invuln. plus, knocking his WS/I and toughness down with rad and stasis grenades will probably work wonders.

so it is a relic, equiped on a character. Abby can just have some chump he is with challenge. Then you will need precision shots to hit abby and then he will 2+ los them off of him. The stasis bomb and rad grenades only work for 1 round, after that he will eat you. Even if he is alone, he challenges, gets your mace character in combat. If you have stasis bomb help you hit on 3+, wound on 2+(it's a mace right) and then he gets his 4++. Even with PE you are doing 1-1.5 wounds average. Abby strikes back, and even with his lower WS from statis, he still hates you, has PE, and is striking at high strength and AP2 with a ton of attacks. Assuming you have a displacement field or stormshield you are going to take 2 wounds the first round. Next turn, stasis wears off and abby strikes first, getting another 2 wounds past your stormshield and you are dead, abby took 1.5 wounds and can now finish off your squad. Even if it did work you are talking a very expensive character, an expensive flyer, and a black knight squad to even try to kill abby in CC. That isn't likely to work very well in practice.

I remember looking at an MS Exel sheet of math-hammer, and at best 1 v 1 in melee alone, Abby will win roughly 45% of the time.
But, it wasn't my work, so it could have been wrong. Automatically Appended Next Post: Lord Yayula wrote:Feed him cheap characters so that he changes into a spawn or DP, that always kills my abaddon. Either that or he rolls enough 1s on his daemon weapon to soften him up
Stick him with a Dark Apostle. That guy allows optional re-rolls on all boons in his unit (Including himself and other IC's).
Use only when Abby is about to be nerfed by the table, or the additional rolls will increase the chances of spawndom/princing.

Was it the new Abby? Hatred, PE, more attacks, and striking first would lead me to believe he would kick Lysander most of the time. A 3++ is nice, but it isnt that much better than abby's 4++.

It is actually 1/9th, still seems to happen all the time. Well, actually now that i think of it 1/9th for each character if a good chance of him becoming a spawn after he has slayed a few guardsmen sergeants.

Well according to everything i can find on the internet that explains how to pronounce his name, ab-a-don is wrong and uh-badden(aladdin with a b instead of an l) is the correct term. According to couple different dictionaries and many other websites. The ONLY people i can find that think its pronounced as ab-a-don are people that play this game.
