I want to create an imperial guard army using non gw models for everything besides my tanks. This isn't to save money its just cause they are different..

So many options that I will only post the ones I'm using.

Pig-Iron Industries has a pretty awesome selection of IG stand-ins from their own sci-fi line.

Pig Iron have just released some awesome modern/near future infantry. Alternatively the Wargames Factory Greatcoat stormtroopers and the new Dreamforge Eisenkern troopers seem ot be the current go-tos for non GW Guard infantry.

Other alternatives that are closer to GW models are the Victoria Lamb guardsmen designed to look more like British Empire troops (including kilted legs!)

They are still a super mainstream army believe it or not. Also why use them instead of great coats?

Thanks, the old warzone minis look too armored like old school space Marines.

Hmm, I like those heavy-armored guys. Might pick up a few for use as Brotherhood of Steel Paladins and other troops in my Fallout: Dark Heresy campaign.

Victoria Miniatures have some cool looking kits. These would make perfect stand-ins for Tanith-like light infantry, for example.

Homebrew Imperial Guard: 1222nd Etrurian Lancers (Winged); Special Air-Assault Brigade (SAAB)
Homebrew Chaos: The Black Suns; A Medrengard Militia (think Iron Warriors-centric Blood Pact/Sons of Sek)

lol I've got a friend on this board who's not creating an entire army of non-GW IG models per se, but purchasing and designating themed IG models based on Metal Gear Solid franchise characters and concepts lol, it's a neat idea.

If he's doing a MGS themed units, he needs to get this model on the left. I've been told it looks somewhat like one of the MGS characters (never played the games, wouldn't know personally).

Eisenkern stormtroopers by Dreamforge are great guardsmen, or just veterans if you prefer.

Supporting infinity models for guardsmen.

Most light infantry choices with combi rifles make excellent spods, assorted specialists for command squad guys, alternate weapons for specials (might be hardest to do if you don't want sniper rifles), and there's some medium and heavy infantry models that would make great marines (or comical sisters, looking at you, nomads)

I collect:
Guard - 2k of mostly infantry
DA - 2k of deathwing, 2k of other bits (no vehicles)
Sisters - mostly converted/proxy because I'm waiting for therange to go plastic.
Tau - 2k with no riptides because I can.

Wouldn't that run someone as much or more than a Death Korps army? Infinity models look great, but they're quite expensive per model.

I play infinity, it's a great game with great models, but using them for an IG army is a terrible idea. They cost more than almost any other option since they are sold individually or in small boxes. The number of poses and weapon options will limit you at the numbers 40k requires. The models will be obviously out of scale next to opposing GW-scale minis, and look out of place next to GW vehicles (if you are still planning to use those).

Maxmini, victoria lamb, wargames factory and dreamforge games all make bodies that could be used for IG. Generally speaking you get what you pay for in terms of sculpt quality.

I would obviously mention Mantic Corporation troopers as well.

I am totally behind using non-GW models for IG infantry. Now that it's hard to get the old metal models for Mordian, Tallarn, and the like, it 's not often you see armies that don't look like either Cadians or Catachan guard.

Hell, even old Cadians would get you an army that looks totally different from plastic Cadians.

If you love the look of historical, check out companies like Warlord to get some awesome deals on infantry. Warlord's Russian infantry plastic set (40 for 46$!!!) make awesome valhallans, and late war Germans can be a cool start to a steel legion army. The best part about these models though is that they have "open" hands, in that their weapons are separate. You can buy some awesome older looking lasguns from Victoria lamb and have them fit just fine on your stand in guardsmen. You can also buy knockoff (or GW) melta and plasma guns and they'll fit right in their hands.

Warlord also uses a heroic scale like GW and they have very organic poses, so they look good on the table. Even the "worst" value sets like plastic Germans are 25 guys for 36 bucks, so your money will go a lot farther than some other options on this list

If money is not an object, I would suggest using the Eisenkern models. They're excellent sculpts and really bring something unique to the table.

If money is an object, the Greatcoat Shock Trooper models make fine Guardsmen (which I should know, since I have an entire army of them).

If money is a problem, Eisenkarn are still cheaper than GW, and higher quality, although it's not a huge gap in price.

20 of them go for roughly the cost of 10 space marines if I recall correctly.
