With 1000 Chapters out there, there's bound to be a few rivalries, so I thought we could have a nice chat and a cup of tea to discuss which Chapters don't get along, and those that are BFFs.
To start the ball rolling, we have the obvious:
Dark Angels vs. Space Wolves. This stems from the Primarchs arguing, and the two Chapters still have honour duels, always trying to out do eachother, secret BFFs though.
Ultramarines vs. Minotaurs. The Lords' lapdogs really put their foot in it when they insulted Calgar to a Primogenitor Chapter, they are now barred for life from Ultramar.
White Scars vs. Raven Guard. Not sure on the details of this, but the codex mentions it.
Iron Hands vs. Raven Guard/ Salamnders. After Ferrus Manus was decapitated by his favourite brother in the world ever, the Iron Hands obviously decided that this was all the fault of the Raven Guard and Salamnders.

Now, for the Chapters that are close to eachother:
Dark Angels and the rest of the Unforgiven. Azrael is still Supreme Grand Master, with all Unforgiven Chapter Masters answering to him. Legion in all but name when it comes to the Fallen.
Ultramarines and the Primogenitors. Did someone say hypocrisy? Calgar snaps his fingers and the 2nd founding chapters from Ultramarine geneseed come running.
Blood Angels and Flesh Tearers. Dante decided that he needed more Scouts, so he told the 2nd founding Blood Angels chapters that he was taking theirs. Gabriel Seth didn't want to share, but soon came round to Dante's way of thinking, even though his chapter only has about 12 guys left, and is now a Bro Angel once more.

Joking aside though, what others are there? Hopefully we can all teach eachother a little about friendship and sharing. Or we can get the books out, argue 'facts' and declare Hive Fleet Behemoth as the Imperial Fists' staunchest ally.

Well, not many people actually know about their founding remember? They were set up by the Inquisition so they are rather secret. It also seems that SW have a few more rivalries that most, they are not fans of the GK but they have a rather famous rivalry with the DA here.

I think the Raven Guard and White Scars rivalry was mentioned in the SM Codex referring to Kayvaan Shrike, they said he was leading an assualt against somebody and the White Scars helped mentioning they were rivalled.

The HH:Betrayal book indicates that the only legion/chapter that the DA seem to harbor any sort of open friendship with are the Salamanders. Then again, other than IH, who doesn't like the Salamanders?

Exactly, Im still waiting to figure out where the hell Vulkan is, I dont even get to know hes sleeping a rock somewhere

Ive never heard of IH Sallies beef, any info on it?

The IH blamed the Ravenguard and Salamanders for the loss of their primarch and so many of their battle-brothers. Their logic is that they could have provided better support, but objectively we know that both the Ravenguard and Sallies had their own issues at that time. I wouldn't call it a rivalry, more of just a refusal to work with them unless absolutely necessary. The Ravenguard and Sallies do not have the same feelings, but do not wish to provoke their fellow astartes, so it's essentially just become a gulf between the chapters.

We'll find out more about Vulkan this fall I believe. My understanding is that he went missing during the Dropsite massacre and no one knows what happened to him after that. I'm guessing it's going to be like Leman Russ where he's out there, somewhere and really just waiting to come back at the right time.

In general, the Salamanders get along with everyone. They are technically Codex adherent, but are heavily influenced by the Promethean Cult. They also do not have any confirmed or known successors. They are a bit of an oddity.

I see, thanks alot for that, ive read all the HH series so far, but in the limited tome the IH and Sallies are shown none of that is brought up, very interesting though. Makes me wonder about Angel Exterminatus, but maybe the feelings hadnt permeated yet within the IH legion.

I would love to know whats up with Vulkan, most of the other primarchs had legitimate explanations, such as death or going into the warp, Vulkan is just GONE, almost no explanation, but in a way thats what drew me to the Salamanders, and why im making to a degree, a successor chapter, lotsa flame and melta!

And yeah Sallies seem to be the most "human" Astartes, in that they value civilain life and go out of their way to protect mortals at cost of their own lives. Most humanitarian award by far lol.

In Promethean sun, you really see that human side of him. He's generally regarded as the most peaceful of the primarchs.

Damn, I dont remember what happened in Promethean Sun, Im about to go reread it right now

In all honesty I found by the time i finished Betrayer I had to reread a bunch of the novels, more likely due to my bad memory rather then poor reading comprehension skills lol

I was just reading Gildar Rift and it described the Silver Skulls being kinda tight with the SW, surprised me, definetly thought they wouldnt be to cool with the whole "our psykers channel the emperor directly" thing. Definetly thought the SW would dislike them, but the explanation was pretty solid overall, better then some other fluff forsure.

OT-Preheresy IW and IF hate was pretty strong, and played a pretty major role on choices during the Heresy.

I am sorry but no, they don't get along with everyone. Besides the IH, there's a lot of hate between Salamanders and Marines Malevolent. The Salamander's Chapter Master himself went full Chuck Norris on a certain Malevolent's face. And they will probably hate any chapter that completely disregards human life.

Salamanders and Black Templars may not be on the most friendly terms aswell. Salamanders are all about protecting human life, BT are all about exterminating

BFFs:
Star Dragons and Blood Swords. One of the stories in Architect of Fate has these 2 chapters working together and they are really close allies.

Space Wolves and Grey Knights don't like each other, I would imagine. Not after the Wolves stopped the Knights from purging all of those civilians after the first Armageddon war.

I'd swear all the generic astartes disliked the GK in a kind of passive "if we let anyone know we'll be next" kind of way?

I collect:
Guard - 2k of mostly infantry
DA - 2k of deathwing, 2k of other bits (no vehicles)
Sisters - mostly converted/proxy because I'm waiting for therange to go plastic.
Tau - 2k with no riptides because I can.

Aye I dare say that the hate the Space Wolves have for the Grey Knigths, and the Inqustion in general is much, much more fierce than their mere dislike for the DA in comparison.

Silver Skulls know about GK and actively pick out recruits for them, and even give up their own psychic recruits.

Blood Ravens know about them, and are allowed by the GK. Maybe due to the secrets and psykers thing.

Salamanders and DA also both have a very strong relationship with the Adeptus Mechanicus if I'm not mistaken.

The SW and Flesh Tearers fought alongside one another and when the FT were still going full rage, they started slaughtering civilians. The SW became pissed and attacked the FT, and marines killed one another. The fight became known as Honor's End and hundreds died, so I can't imagine the SW and FT have much love for one another.
