Bit odd that they're launching another KS even if their previous one hasnt finished yet, but whatever. People love KS eh?

Galaxy Defenders is a cooperative tactical board game, inspired by the classical Sci-Fi movies and video games of the '80s and '90s.

In Galaxy Defenders up to five players fight together – each taking control of one or more agents with unique powers – to defend the planet from an alien invasion. The Aliens are controlled by a sophisticated, card-driven artificial intelligence system. The battle for Earth against the aliens develops in a series of missions organized in a story-driven campaign.

By backing this Kickstarter, you will receive a copy of this unique Sci-Fi game, and you will have access to exclusive miniatures, available only to the backers of this project. If we reach and exceed our initial funding goal, we will be able to upgrade the game contents with exciting options: bonus miniatures, additional maps, cards, missions, and more!

OVERVIEW

The game includes different mission, each mission providing a different challenge to the players.

After setting up the mission, gameplay revolves around a tactical combat system, that uses custom 10-sided dice.

Each player, in sequence, activates his agent. After an agent takes his or her turn, the aliens take their turn. After the actions of agents and aliens are completed, the round ends with an Event phase.

There is no "Alien player": In Galaxy Defenders, the aliens are controlled by the game system itself, through an artificial intelligence system based on TWO types of cards:

ALIEN CARDS: Alien cards define the behavior of each different alien, along with its movement value, skills, life points and weapons.
Each alien figure on the map will be linked to a specific card, to keep track of everything that happens to that alien.

CLOSE ENCOUNTER CARDS: These cards are drawn at the beginning of each alien turn to determine which aliens will be activated.

The combination of a unique A.I. for each alien species, and the uncertainty about which aliens will be activated in a turn, are an incredibly realistic simulation of the chaos of battle, and provide a very sophisticated challenge to the players' skill.

SCALABLE DIFFICULTY

Thanks to the turn structure, the level of difficulty will scale dynamically based on the number of agents in play. More agents in play bring more activations of the aliens. In this way, the system grants the right level of difficulty with any number of players. Even in the event of some agents dying during the game, the system will "recalibrate" the difficulty to a reasonable and enjoyable level, so you may still have a chance to complete a mission.

CAMPAIGN & RANK-UP SYSTEM

The events of each mission will influence future games in two different ways:

Each mission may have multiple endings and the outcome of any mission will change the flow of the story.

The Agents will gain experience during the missions. This experience can be used to transform a good soldier into a perfect Galaxy Defender agent with multiple skills, basic and improved tactics and the ability to use new devices, improved human weapons and Alien technology. Each Agent has unique paths to development, so that different characters will preserve their specialties even when leveling-up.

I think this is the closest we're going to get to a tabletop X-COM. That's what's got me interested.

The price, not so much.

40 bucks for the exclusives seems pretty steep.

Anyone else notice Robocop and ED-209 look like they'll be making an appearance alongside the Governor and Ripley?

Poorly lit photos of my ever- growing collection of completely unrelated models!

This being more or less X-Com is what attracted me to it.

I was a little put off by the price of the exclusives as its twice what most other kickstarters have charged per miniature. I was a lot out off by the fact that you the creators say you need multiple of the exclusive aliens (between 2 and 4 of each exclusive depending on number of players / level of character).

Postage also a concern but hopefully they can get some European distributor sorted (they mentioned they would I there was interest).

Do they have the licenses for the xenomorph and alien hunter?
Those are really good looking sculpts but I'd always thought the licenses were tough to get for those.

Maybe I was wrong.

@riegld2. I do not believe they have the licence otherwise we would be seeing an Aliens or preditor game instead. I think this is the usual kickstarter exclusives inspired by popular culture figure over reaching a little bit.

yeah,
Something about this doesn't quite gel... the whole thing looks kinda messy.
Also Postage?
$49 postage on a $75 game.. no thanx.
They are based in Italy but give free postage to US but charge to europe (+ROW) ... Thats pretty fethed up!

Not that interested...

I'm curious as to how much the elite alien set stretch goal will cost us (assuming we get there).

That's going to add a further ten figures to the mix- if two plastic figures are going to cost 20 bucks, I dread to think what ten will be.

If it isn't unreasonable I may go with the extra aliens and forgo the KS exclusive aliens altogether.

Maybe they'll have a further stretch goal for more xenos to sweeten the pot a bit.

This seems like it's going to fund pretty quickly too.

Ares games on the licensing issue -

These figures come from the collective imagination of the 80s and 90s, there are no names, colours, writings or details in common with copyright materials. In addition these figures will not be sold, but will be created as a reward for the GD backers (for a limited time of 30 days) who help us in this project.

Given how similar they are I am not so sure as they are.

The sculpts look like cheap toys, but with GW prices.

Great concept- Sloptacular execution.

This looks like a moneygrab with a few Pregen Archtypes just tacked on for laughs.

Not Ha-Ha ones, either.

Honestly the whole project looks like a bad rip off. Dreadball background, Dutch and predator- Ripley and Alien.... X com rip off rules set.

I MIGHT be interested in this if the pricing was better and if I didnt think there was a chance this game gets shut down due to a lawsuit thus putting me out in the cold

Since nobody's brought it up, I guess I will.

Ares/ Gremlin Games have updated the stretch goals a bit.

At 70k and 90k they're throwing in free extra figures.

When they hit 140k backers get a free Robocop inspired "Alien G-Droid" to harass the humans with. At some point or another there will be a reprogrammed Agent version available to purchase.

The original 140k stretch has now been switched to an immediate optional purchase. It's 10 additional higher level aliens for $20.00.

Creators also commented that we might see additional Xeno-morphs end up on the table.

Hopefully they'll be able to find a solution to the nasty shipping fees before this kickstarter ends.

I guess I'll drag this back up since it hasn't got much of a mention around these parts in quite some time.

The kickstarter finishes up Tuesday the 19th so there's still a bit more time.

They totally reworked the stretch goals and there's a fair bit more to the box now. There's been about 15 or so extra figures added to the box at this point.
Cyberdiscs are now part of the aliens arsenal for those that remember them fondly (maybe not so fondly too). A few more agents have been added in as freebies, including an allied not- predator.
Their galaxy ball variant will be included.
More than likely the aliens vs agents head to head variant will be included (they need like 5 backers or something more to go while I type this).

Beta rules and scenarios are available on the game's website for those who want to peruse them.

Still not a huge fan of some of the agent sculpts (Sigourney in particular) but the aliens look pretty decent. I thought this game caught a lot of flack for their homage characters when Zombicide seemed to do the same thing.

They need a few more fans on Board Game Geek- hit the fan button (which is free anyways) and help those who are interested get more goodies for their game. It takes less than a minute and costs you nothing!

They're also having a guessing game on Board Game Geek for free minis for the person who guesses the correct amount of money raised and final backer total. Has to be done within 24 hours to be eligible though.

It actually ends this Tuesday, May 21st, in case anyone was wondering!

I'm a bit surprised this one has done as well as it has - good for them!

Gah, you don't expect me to actually know what day of the week AND the date is today, do you?

It's Monday. I'm lucky I was coherent enough to drive myself to work today. I do work today, don't I? Guess I'll find out in a few minutes!

...where do I work again?
