Superb technique, and nicely done.
I think my only complaint is that you painted a blue colored army that isn't... well... blue colored. You've got a grey and cyan thing going on, which certainly suggests bluish, but it also suggests space wolves grey, amongst other things.

I think I prefer it like that actually.

Yeah, the subdued palette is really quite striking. Still recognisably Ultramarines, but the call to mind the darker, grittier artwork instead of the bright, shiny poster boys.
My only criticism would be the undrilled exhausts on the rhino... Other than that, superb work.

@Insaniak yah after all said in done I look back and complain about the rhino stacks as well.
@ailaros I know what you mean when people hear ultramarines they think smurf blue shiny clean. I really dont like painting that way so I thought I'd give it a spin and see how it would go. it really hit or miss so far, I've had people tell me they love it and would want to see and entire army like it. Then I've had people say it goes against ultramarines ways and there armor would never get that dirty.

I really like the way you treated the Ultramarines on these models. A little less flashy than you normally see and I really like the way it turned out. Great work!

I like it, gives more of a true fighting warrior brotherhood feel with the damaged and subdued colours. I too would like to see a whole UM force done like this, its probably the only way I would run Ultras, im simply not a fan of that really shiny blue.
Overall gorgeous work.

I like the muted palette you chose for these guys. Makes them look suitably dark and gritty. If I may, though, I'd recommend photographing on a white background instead so as to not detract from these fantastic models with a bit of poor lighting.

Looks great, I think anyone would be proud to own/wield this army.
Do you mind sharing how you achieved the battle damage on the tanks? You really seem to have achieved a lot of depth perception with the paint chips.

It seems people like my weathering the most out of all my stuff I've painted so in the next week or 2 I'm going to sit down and make a tutorial on the 2 weathering techniques I use the most, hairspray and sponge.
This one was a quick sponge job with black and highlighted the lower edges with Ivory.

This. It's painted both incorrectly and very very well.

I'm just wondering why do you think this is painted incorrectly? Just the colors thing or is there more that you think is incorrect?
Thanks for the complement.

The sergeant's helmet should be red not blue, being the most glaring error. You have him in the errant so that's pretty good, although with MkVI legs meh.. Most of the squad has a mash-up of armor types, and im not a big fan of that. But thats just a personal choice. But The sergeants helmet needs to be red.
As a display piece I would criticize the squad being attached to a razorback and not a rhino because of the size.
I would have liked a picture that showed their right shoulders, I have a sneaking suspicion you left out the tactical insignia and squad numeral, as one is not echoed on the transport. I think some extra detail like that would really bring them full circle.

I think a mash up of armor types is extremely realistic given the 40k universe. fluff-wise, SM armor is based down over thousands of years, mash ups are likely to occur, even for a chapter like the ultramarines.
And color-wise, I wouldn't follow GW codex to the letter, especially given all of the discrepancies. its much more about the art, effect, and presentation I think, despite being super anal about technical details myself. i myself am going to be painting space wolves a lot more blue than they are generally depicted

I do have 13th company that i'm working on rite now we will see how close they will come out when i'm done with them.
I'm happy to see people liking the paint job. They were a blast to paint and am thinking about extending the project to an 1850 army list.

Perhaps but I really like to believe that the power armor is so meticulously cared for and respected that that is not the case, especially for a first founding chapter like the Ultramarines. Again it's only my opinion, yours is perfectly valid.
The red helmet is pretty established. discrepancies do occur in tactical/devastator/assault devices over time. Sometimes its the big arrow, sometimes it is shaped a little different. I'm sure you've seen all sorts of varieties. It's a strategy to delude enemies. This is the legion that wrote the codex astartes, those devices are essential in representing them.

Yea you're probably right about the ultramarines caring for their armor to that degree....just sounded harsh when you were critiquing the minis, thought I'd offer a fluff-based defense

As a Display peace the razorback is off but all at the same time they can be combat squad with the rocket launcher in the back field for support. Normally I would do a Rhino here, but the guy who was getting the models after the contest wanted a Razorback. Also there is no marking on the armor or RB for the same reason he couldn't remember what company he didn't have so I didn't put one on there. I could have done an arrow, but I wasn't thinking about it at the time. You are correct in saying the helm should be red. I can't argue with that, it was a over look on my part and when I make the 1800pt army in this style I will make sure to do the helms correctly.
About the armor I feel that they would have mixed armor by now, but that is just me. also its easyer to build mixed armor instead of hunting down all the same armor pieces.
Primarchz thanks for defending be lol. The way he said it did come off a little harsh but IDK if he meant it to be or not, either way he has every right to be harsh if he wants to be. I'm going for the Golden Demon this year so every little thing with help. What he said is true the little things in the army is what puts it over the top, so 6^ I thank you for the advice.

The painting is technically very good, but you've got ultramarines that aren't ultramarine (which is actually a colour, for anyone that wasn't aware). That said, this hobby is what you make of it, so if you want to paint them differently, knock yourself out!
