I wish i could go to salute. Oh well time to show what the internet has snapped photos of
Perry Miniatures has ACW Artillery, AWI Continentals, WotR Foot Men at Arms and Light Cav
Warlord got some WW2 goodness with Japanese and Blitzkrieg Germans
Fireforge finally makes some non european knights by making Mongols! Light Cavalry will be in plastic while things like heavy and command will be in resin
Unfortunately NO ONE thus far has decided to snap photos of Firefirges Mongols. How inconvenient!

Sweet, very pleased about the Perry WotR stuff.
Very possible to make an Empire army out of plastic Perry minis which look a hell of a lot better than the GW ones and are a quarter of the cost (or more like an eighth of the cost in the case of those new greatswords!) .

Michael asked me and some others at the Tactica in Hamburg what we would rather have, Men-at-arms on foot or the light cavalry. Votes were nealry evenly spread but I said to him "You are the Perry Brothers, you are going to release both anyways". Guess that´s not too far from the truth. ^^ I hope they release the cavalry first as I have all the Men-at-arms on foot I already need . ;-)
The rest sounds good, too and especially the Fireforge Mongols will be something different. Very nice news all in all.

Those men-at-arms look exactly like the heavy armoured infantry guys from the other two sets.
Which is a good thing
I bought 2x2 of the War of the Roses/Europ. Mercenaries boxes and with a little help of some casualty-markers, were able to get ~35 heavily armoured troopers. I guess now I can get another 40 without much problem
But... where are the new japanese ww2 warlord miniatures?
PS: I also own a almost completely Perry Warhammer Empire Army

PLASTIC MONGOLS? Yes!
Seriously, how is it that no one took any pictures of them, but there are lots of loving photos of Perry Miniatures' WOTR slightly-tweaked, just-phoning-it-in rehashes brilliant more medieval European guys from one frikkin time period models? With the entire sweep and awe of world history, people just like the things that happened in their own back yards in, maybe three time periods? No wonder Hollywood thinks it's better to remake Robocop than do anything original.
I can't believe Warseer had photos and Dakka didn't.

Yes, many people are very happy because it sure is nice when a company completes an entire range in plastic.

You're not as witty as you think you are. Yes, I would hope they complete all of their plastic ranges; and since WotR is their most popular it makes sense to finish it up first.

Now now, let's not get personal.
I'd be a lot happier if they released the range quicker then, so that they could move on to more things. How many more factions are required for WOTR, anyway? And for the Napoleonics? Should I just give up hope on the Perrys ever doing anything interesting outside of Europe in plastic?
And honestly, I am much more excited about the Mahdists than another WOTR kit. At least they can be converted into something other than "not-Empire" or "not-Game of Thrones". The Napoleonics are great because I can mount them on dragons or give them lasrifles... but the range is getting a little bland.
It's just nice to see someone open up the most populous continent in the world to gaming.

I didn't realise they were releasing models based on population of the continent of origin.
The WoTR range is not only excellent it is one of the biggest sellers. Many people use them to represent all types of later Medieval conflicts other than just cut price Empire.
The Mahdist range seems much more niche and I'm glad they're doing the Medievals instead. As nice as the WWII stuff seems to be I was a little disappointed they didn't concentrate on their existing ranges more instead of starting and entirely new one but that's those wacky Perrys, modelling butterflys

RandyMcStab wrote:I didn't realise they were releasing models based on population of the continent of origin.
That's not what I said. I lamented over the fact that very few model companies--apparently only the ones with bad reputations--are releasing models outside of the European war re-enactor's comfort zone, and someone gave me gak for that. I was pointing out that there is a bigger continent with more people, more history, and more historical wars, which should appeal to wargamers.
And you know what? Maybe they really should release models based on "that's an interesting period of history with a battle that affected more people in a single dynasty than existed in the entire history of the Roman Empire."
The WoTR range is not only excellent it is one of the biggest sellers. Many people use them to represent all types of later Medieval conflicts other than just cut price Empire.
That's impossible. If the existing WOTR kits were so versatile as to be able to represent more than one specific force from one time period, then there would be no reason for the Perrys to release two or three additional kits of nearly identical guys standing in much the same poses, but with the appropriate attire specific to each other faction or class of the period. Are you truly suggesting that people found the existing kits good enough to represent an entire small wedge of local conflict? That sounds unreasonable.
I do think the Mahdist kit is good enough to represent the conflict (and many others with a few head and weapon swaps). I was just making a point that the Perrys didn't go all Rain Man button-counter on their non European ranges. I would love to see them branch out more for the following reason:
"The WOTR range sells the best."
They only have 4 plastic ranges. Maybe if they branched out more they would find something that outsells WOTR 10:1 and can be represented by one infantry kit with some head options and one cavalry kit. That would be amazing. But it will never happen because the Perrys won't make new kits in new periods since things that don't exist obviously don't sell as well as WOTR kits.

There's a limit as to how prescriptive a miniatures company can be with their releases. They can't just wave a magic wand and make another conflict as interesting to wargamers as the Wars of the Roses or ACW. The last of miniatures might well be a symptom of a genuine lack of interest, and not the other way around.

The sheer fact of the matter is that Perry's plastics enhance their existing metals range. I wouldn't be surprised if they introduced a plastic Samurai kit, too.
As it stands, historicals are HUGE in europe, and English historicals are HUGE in England. So if they look at their sales sheets and go "oh gee WOTR is super popular" then they will continue making plastics.
Complaining about making different kits with only slight variance is like complaining people make Napoleonics figs for different years in the war. It's important to many, and important enough to merit manufacture. And importance is measured in sales.
Perhaps the Mahdists didn't sell well? So they are reluctant to make more? Remember, Perry are using Renedra, so the sprues cost $20-$60k each depending on complexity and size. This isn't CAD sculpted, made in china; it's 3ups with pantographic scanning, which is FAR more expensive, and they're made in the UK.
So if they Perry's are looking at their sales sheet and they see, WOTR at #1 and ACW at #2 and Mahdists at last place, well, gee, a WOTR men at arms kit (which is needed) and ACW Artillery in plastic makes a whole hell of a lot more sense to manufacture than some weirdo random kit. And perhaps the Perry's (who basically game every conflict in history, ever) would LOVE to release weirdo kits but need these ultrapopular ones to fund them?

The two boxes they have plannend for Wotr complete the range prefectly. The light cavalry is the last set that gives you troops that were used in larger numbers by many european armies and thus makes sense to do in plastic. The Men-at-arms set though isn´t really necessary imho as you didn´t have that many dismounted Men at arms fighting on foot, even in england iirc. Still, to what I gathered was that this set indeed is a nod to those using the minis for Empire-standins as large bodies of Maa on foot make sense there (and thus I don´t complain, such boxes pay for the more obscure ranges). The other sets are each to their own necessary as they are as they cover all the most necessary weaponoptions. And those you need in proper numbers. So not just a release of boxes with hardly different guys. Either you release one or none at all. To be more regional specific, you have variants like the tudor or swiss heads. For even more specific clothing varinats you get the italian blisters for example.
All in all I like that they finish this range first. ;-) Perry Miniatures is basically a hobby project of the two. So they do what they really want to do.

If you use the figures for HYW then there'd be a huge amount of dismounted knights / men-at-arms.

Ehh using WotR figs for HYW is a bit stretchy. Maybe last few years but its best to probably stick with actual HYW figs
But hey in the end, companies decide what will and will not be made

I use the WoTR kits for my HYW army. The Bows and Bills boxset works very well, the full harness guys' plate is too advanced in places but really it's not a big deal (to me).
You can use the metal range obviously (my Hobilar/mounted archers are) but multipart plastic is so cheap and adaptable.
