Subject: Is it worth getting more reptiles?

Hey,
I love animals, be it mammals, reptiles or birds, and currently at home I've got a pair of cats and a charming Gecko. However, I was hoping to expand my collection more, and was wondering whether it was worth getting a snake or some turtles. It would either be a Corn Snake or some Musk Turtles. I'm leaning towards the turtles, seeing as my mother hates snakes, but nothing's in stone yet.
Anybody had experience with these? Would you recommend one over the other?
Thanks in advance,
Blap

Any snake you get is going to want as much room as a beardie, and the beardie you can let out to run around much easier for exercise.

Agreed, I've had countless (okay probably closer to like 15) bearded dragons over the course of my life, and they're fantastic pets. And they can show off beautiful colors.
had some sandfire morphs, such an awesome golden red color in the sunlight

Actually, I might well have the room with a bit of shuffling. I have thought quite a bit about Beardies, but I've always leaned closer to Water Dragons, just because they're more attractive to me.

Just remember, they have weak jaw opening muscles, but they'll crush your arm Source: Typing this one handed jk, but seriously get something cool and bad ass, snakes are boring pets unless there is some danger to them, like they'll kill you with a bite, or they'll strangle you in your sleep.

I had a russian tortoise for a short while. I made the mistake of letting a friend care for it while I was away for work, for 1 day. It died. The poor thing got turned over in his very shallow water bowl at the exactly angle needed to drown himself. :/ my friend was sitting next to his cage playing on the computer all day long but never noticed until it was too late.. sigh. now im depressed.

That sucks. At least you've still got the setup, which is a positive. Automatically Appended Next Post:

unfortunately, the "setup" was a large tote, that was shallow, with a square cut out 85% of lid covered with wire with a heat lamp sat on top. It was only temporarily until he was too big. Ended up giving it away to a kiddo or something as I never really had room for it to begin with.

I'd pick the corn snake over the bearded dragon, but I'll choose either one over turtles. I've owned both corn snake and bearded dragon for several years and they're awesome pets.
Except for bearded dragon poop. That stuff STINKS.

In my experience, everything that poops poops out smelly stuff... Bearded dragon poop has been no exception...
Iguana poops are the worst poops I've had to smell... well except when I was 5 and my neighbor said he would pay me 20 bucks to clean out his dog house... And then pushed me into the gak when I started to gag... I can tell you literally what gak tastes like... he can tell you what it's like to get it in your eyes...

Just read up.
Then read up some more. Understand the size, dietary needs, lighting needs, vitamin requirements, social needs and optimum conditions needed.
Then be sure you will be prepared to keep the animal in top condition, without tiring of it, for all it's life. Many reptiles are very long lived.
Then don't stint on the environment for the animal. Pay up and get the best. If you want to keep an animal for the right reasons, you want to keep it well.
Consider contacting the RSPCA to see if they currently have reptiles in need of re-homing.
And don't stick it in a tote where it will drown...

On a serious note, a friend of mine had a bearded dragon and that thing was awesome. He also had an iguana that would walk around the room while we had band practice. I'll never forget how the drummer was terrified of it, yet he was the biggest dude in the band by far.

If you don't have room for a bearded, you don't have room for a musk turtle either. Not that you should get one anyway, musk turtles are disgusting.
If your room is limited, get the corn snake.
If you can make the room, then get the bearded. I've owned both bearded and water dragons, and water dragons make comparatively lousy pets. My advice is to get a large, deep bookcase for a bearded (we're talking 4ft high, 2 feet deep, and 4 feet wide or so), make a screen door for the front, add some heat lamps and sandblasted grape vine, and call it a day.

I thought Musk Turtles were small, staying at about 4"? Maybe you're thinking of Giant Musks?
Anyway, after having a discussion, the snake seems quite likely if everything is orderly and such.

Seriously? I'll write the following assuming your insinuation was about me...
I sure hope you aren't trying to criticize the habitat of my pet that you never saw and no next to nothing about except what I made you (and this thread) privy to? Good god.
I also hope you weren't trying to insinuate I'm a bad pet owner based on your presumptions regarding the tidbit of information I presented.
Like blap said, gak happens. I don't ask that friend to water my cats when I'm out of town for the same reason. That was the lesson learned. Seeing as I had copied the watering setup from the reptile store where I purchased my turtle, which he advised me to do when I asked.. and I did my homework.. a 24" x 36" footprint was plenty large enough for a 4" diameter turtle to get around... and the height was definitely not an issue...
Now, i'll take off my "assuming hat"
So I'm going to go out on a limb here, and reason that you COULD NOT of POSSIBLY been trying to insinuate anything about me personally, and were just speaking in generalities.. Because I think that you know, what good assuming is. and I know you wouldn't go out of your way to speak out of ignorance about a situation in an attempt to shame me.. Goodness.. Honestly can't believe you felt need to pick apart my 1 sentence, as if I presented enough evidence for you to evaluate the situation... mind boggling lol
also, I think the horned armadillo lizard wins the thread.
