Unsure just how newsworthy this is, but if you're going to the Warlord event and still interested in GoA then you might want to see this
Rik Alexander will be on hand to update you on the project so far.
We have background, basic rules, basic weapon types with stats and some army lists to show so far.
We will even have a fantastic figure or two ready to be sold to those of you that are looking for some fantastic Sci-fi figures to collect and paint.
If you thought that was amazing we will have Ed Ward from Warmill fame helping us run introductory games to help you get a good idea of where the rules are heading.
The table will be festooned with great looking Sci-fi scenery from their massive range of laser cut buildings and scenics. Worth playing for the table alone!
There may be limited space on this one so be sure to book your game early…
ALL ABOUT THE DAY - 27th July 2013
We are proud to announce that out first full Warlord Games Open Day. It will be a celebration of all things great within our wonderful hobby. Artists, Sculptors, Authors, Games Designers, Scenery Makers and much, much more will be there to answer your every query.
We are running introductory games to all our games systems. If you are already familiar with them then join in with the re-fights of the "Unleash Hell" battle at Vindobona, the attack on the Pacific Island Bougainville or the "Relief of Newark" Pike & Shotte game.
Engage in Q&A sessions, convert and paint your miniatures, see the moulding and casting processes in action and take away a figure hot of the presses! This is an all ticket event for strictly limited numbers!
Interesting. Sounds like they're taking a more traditional tack with the GoA idea - showcasing sculpts and ideas, building interest. However, their forums have been taken over by spammers of late and their website is lying fallow. They need to get that side cleaned up as well...

I think the fact that this is announced through Warlord Games, with apparently noone even bothering to post that piece of news on Dark Space Corp, pretty much shows that they've abandoned that one to the rats.

Which is a pity.
Indeed. Despite the kickstarter being canceled, there was and is a lot of enthusiasm. Abandoning the forums is a shame considering the amount of fan contributions (despite the female model thread and the hard science debate!)

Indeed. The forums over there are being spammed by bots :( I was really hoping they would keep updating it, but no...

Everyone should go dressed as cat people and demand to have a race designed after them. The fact that they might have a figure or two to sell just shows me that they haven't really done anymore on this project.

To be fair, if they have two figures they have expanded their line by 100% since only the Hansa dude was done last time. Plus minatures cost money to produce so the work done might have been on that whole background and rule part that was missing in the Kickstarter and made everyone a little gunshy.
Glory is fleeting. Obscurity is forever.

I expect they'll have Hansa, Freeborn (Space wolf technosavage type), possibly the Boromite (rock dude). Still fancy a hansa for my Van Saars so I hope the sculpt sees the light of day at some point..

I'm pretty curious to what there've done with this project since the failed KS, most of all the miniatures and new concepts, but in all reality much like Zed pointed out the forums for this have been basically dead and overrun with spammers for months now (trust me I've been visiting the site often). They really need to sort it out if they wish to get serious about this project again, a dead site full of forgotten concepts, dead accounts and spam doesn't exactly give the most "positive" outlook to potential costumers now does it. One thing I would love to know is are they still going to be running as a community driven/designed project or has that changed?
Well, either way it nice to see this project back from the dead.

There was also this update from Warlord, where Rick briefly mentions the changes to the game. I think a big one is that Antares is adopting the Bolt Action dice mechanism.

The forums being dead is a slightly predicable but bad portent for the future of the game. If they were going to go on with the development, the whole "fan contribution" thing as well as the worldwide evolving campaign aspect, it bodes badly that they simply abandoned the forums and community that had grown up around their game as soon as the KS got cancelled.

It sadly enough kind of shows the whole reason why they were doing this: to make profit. Yes, I know companies exist to make profit, but what separates the normal ones form the great ones is that they have an actual reason to what they do.
Recieved my Hansa figure this morning, nice figure with some great detail. The sculpt had no huge mold lines but a slightly weird vent on the gun barrel.
Heres a size comparison pic with a couple of figs I had to hand

Sci-fi skirmish is really, really hard to break into on Kickstarter this year.
BtGoA and Thon both failed pretty hard.
I think niches are becoming rapidly filled... Relic Knights managed to nail down the anime fan market, whereas Deadzone has done a very good job of the traditional necromunda-style game with small teams of minis going on missions, gaining experience and gear in campaigns etc.
You really need quite a lot of work already done, right off the bat. I'd say as a bare minimum at least 3d renders for the basic game or first 2 factions, and concept art for everything else before it gets taken seriously, as well as some preview rules and background.
The only thing that seemed to have effort put into it with BtGoA was the flashy kickstarter graphics.
That said, I would like to see the minis released, simply because it's nice to have good quality sci-fi minis that can be used for anything. If they stick to £5/mini instead of going all "boutique £15 resin" and crap, it'll be quite good as a fresh source of nicely sculpted minis.

Though GoA could have done very well, if they weren't asking £300k/$450,000 with nothing to show for it. £50k for a rulebook on the back of Priestly's name probably would have worked.
Automatically Appended Next Post: On a similar note, Hasslefree are planning two kickstarters this year. They were asking on Facebook if they should run three - the first two "small" ones concurrently with the bigger one to follow. I'm expecting them to have a BIG learning curve, since they're such a small operation, based on how badly we've seen even small KS overwhelm other small operators.

While I agree that Thon failed pretty hard for some obvious reasons that the creator seemed unwilling to address (price and scale), he seems to have put in alot of work since. I've debated bumping the Thon thread but figured it would be thread necro after these past couple of months.

Sounds ludicrously traditional. They had some buzz going through the campaign, even if it was critical, people were engaged. Why would you let that evaporate so merrily?

I thought the failure of GoA was, as others have pointed out, down to a couple of key issues - it did however have some really exciting ideas. The development of the game universe as the fans play the game for instance, and bi-directional feedback between creators and the fans as the game played.
I think it was that, more than the 'big names' that had pulled quite a few fans towards it.
I wonder if ultimately the scope was too large, and even with time in preparation Warlord just aren't big enough, with the resources, to pull it off. The fact that Rick Priestly and others have been working on other projects since doesn't fill me with hope..
well they do have to pay the bills and as freelance designers for hire that's how they do it
what's more worrying is the abandonment of the GoA forums, as they did have an engaged fan base (even if it was not large enough) and putting in a bit of effort keeping things ticking over would have been the smart thing to do if this is ever to re-appear in anything like similar form

A Priestly-penned supplement for the Rogue Trader RPG (FFG). And no, I'm not being a smartarse.
Can't see why that would be a jest. Both Andy Chambers and Andy Hoare have contributed to the FFG40KRPG range already, Priestly would be the cherry on top really.
