Hey Dakka,

Here are some pics of my Grey Knights I started painting a little while ago. Only had a little experience painting minis for Dungeons and Dragons so criticism is welcome! I haven't based them yet because I am trying to pick what kind of base I want them on as well as learn how to do it!

Beautiful crisp clean GK. I would say two things:
1. Drill the barrels of your guns
2. Make the lightning lines on the power weapons finer and crisper

Haha.. I actually thought the same. Any tips on how to get a finer edge on the lightning? I used the best, stiffest brush I had but that was the best I could do.

I do need to pick up a drill as well. I have a dremel rotary tool but I would need to buy the extension for it for the finer details. Or is the Citadel hand drill good enough?

I use the P3 hand drill and it works just fine for stuff like bolter barrels, heavy bolter barrels etc.

Honestly with your lightning, I would use the existing lines as a "background", meaning I would take a less thinned down white and a real tiny brush ( a #1 should do it), just dip the very tip of it and then go over top of the existing lightning, using the existing stuff like an "Aura" that's coming from the lightning, and get "shaky hand syndrome" as you go over them, giving the lightning the random effect that it so naturally has, also a few tiny little "forks" coming off the sides, honestly I watched a tutorial on Youtube and I believe it's from "Girl painting" on doing lightning effects and it helped me tremendously.

Oh and yes, part of the P&M Showcase rules is to have a picture in your first post as mentioned above, Dakka's gallery is a great place to host images and for good reason the easiest way to link them into the thread.

"You are like a son and together we have all but conquered the galaxy. Now the time has come for me to retire to Terra. My work as a soldier is done and now passes to you for I have great tasks to perform in my earthly sanctum. I name you Warmaster and from this day forth all of my armies and generals shall take orders from you as if the words came from mine own mouth. But words of caution I have for you for your brother Primarchs are strong of will, of thought and of action.

This army will look great, but don't forget to remove those mould lines. Just Google mould line removal if you don't know what I mean.

Updated the pictures. Sorry about that. They are a uh.. bit large. Heh. Thanks for the advice guys, I'll definitely pick up a drill and check out on lighting effects. I have 30 PAGKs and 10 terminators to go so I'll have plenty of time to improve!

Aye, good job on the painting but the mould lines really stand out. Fix those up and Job's a Good 'Un!

This is being moved to the regular painting and modeling forum as the 'showcase' forum is for completely finished models (including some sort of basing work).

For something like a boltgun barrel, I would avoid the dremil... maybe others use it for that job.. but for me its far far too powerful for such a delicate job... I drill my boltgun barrels with a 1.5mm drill bit, which doesnt leave a great deal of room for missing the center point without breaking the sides of the barrel - Ive had to fill with putty, reshape and try drilling again a few times now :( have considered getting some plasticard tube of the right diameter with the right hole dia' and replacing all the barrels with that too. Am sure thats how you'd scratch build a gun barrel.
I find that center punching the place i want to drill with my knife, then using a 1mm drill bit in a pin vice, then I can use my fingers with a 1.5mm bit quite easily, and then back to the 1mm to drill the side holes. Taking my time and being careful on every hole.

As for the models, Looking rather nice, very clean lines, especially for your first army I can recall my first army as a youngster, it was a bit sloppy to say the least.

For the lightening, you could try to 'cut' away at the thickness of the white line by painting the blue in again, As for getting a nice thin line it does take a brush with a nice point on it (I dont think citadel sell one of those), and nicely thinned out paint probably in a few layers. It might be easier to tidy up a fatter line than it is to lay down a nice thin one straight up untill your very steady and good at controlling your brushes.

Great job for first models! Now for a bit of weathering. I recommend a Tamiya weathering powder kit, you can get them off ebay rather cheap.

For not a lotof experience you paint pretty well! Only thing it seems you need work on is painting the force weapons. I would suggest finding some spare bits to practice your technique for the swords. But other than that, fantastic job

It's a very good effort for your first real army, much better then my start ten years ago. Emperor forfend, those were miserable.
I've been painting lightning on my necrons last month and it's a quite a chore, takes some time to get down right. But the end result is worth it.
The method I use is as follows:
I undercoat the surface that will have the lightning in a dark color (scab red for red or ultramarine blue with a healthy dose of black added) with a single layer up from the black basecoat.
Then make a slighty-darker then medium tone and make a line over the surface, leaving the edges dark.
Mix up a relatively light color, and paint a thinner line inside the line you made earlier.
Get pure white and your smallest tipped brush and paint a jagged, wobbly line with forks and such.
If the lines are to jagged at this point, consider making a light glaze (very watery paint) and painting this over the surface edges to diffuse the colors. if you're looking for a challenge, you can also try to blend the colors when still wet.
Another tip I can give is to get a piece of plasticard, cut it in the shape of a GK glaive, stick it to a rod of sprue, undercoat it, and test your techniques on that. That way you can practise without mucking up a model.

Hopefully, my advice can help you a bit.
