I have seen a lot of photos from a lot of wars, but I found these pretty remarkable.
http://www.slate.com/blogs/behold/2013/05/31/michael_kamber_photojournalists_on_war_the_untold_stories_from_iraq_photos.html
This one was particualrly striking for a number of reason, some technical, some for narrative, and some for just capturing a certain feeling of the moment at that time.
Be warned, most of these are photos that were censored for release at the time. Some are violent and gruesome and others are isturbing for other reasons.

My buddy Mo has some classic photos from when his unit occupied a Saddam Palace after the invasion, I shall see if he will let me post one or two of them.

Kinda off topic. But is there a difference between the gun in this photo
And this photo.
They look the same but the gun in the 1st pic looks more compact then the one/s in the 2nd but i can't tell if it's smaller or just a dodgy angle.

First one is an M-4. Second one is an M-16A3.
Their based on the same design. The M-4 became more standard over the last decade because of the urban environments we were frequently engaged in. It's shorter barrel allowed it to be used in tighter spaces. The M-16A3 is the standard Marine M-16 if I recall correctly. It puts full auto back onto the rifle after it was removed.
Powerful photo's. #4 especially.

Wow.. really impressive and powerful photos.
Subject matter is appalling though, and puts a picture to the news reports about the amount of sectarian violence taking place in the country. Believe last month was the highest death-toll in some years, although the whole thing seems to have completely slipped from public attention recently. That bit of news for instance was halfway through a paper, next to some story about Lou Reed having an operation and an article about the advantages of giving birth naturally..

The worst part, is I suspect that wasn't a particularly uncommon occurrance. It's a weird feeling to have outrage at the situation, but being unable to direct that outrage at any anyone because nobody was at fault.

It's the M-16A4 actually, and no we still only have burst fire capability on our rifles, the "A4" package is fresh internals, barrel, flat top receiver with ACOG, Knight Arms rail system and some other improvements. I miss mine. Thing was like a swiss watch as long as I kept her well maintained.

They removed the first picture of the marine's casket being returned home, witht he passengers looking out the window. That one was surreal looking and a great juxtaposition of how the war was experienced by civilains vs. military.
I wonder why they removed it?

They may not have had the family's permission.

Agree with Dreadclaw. Also the passengers usually don't know the remains traveling with them. Watch a movie with Kevin Beacon called "Taking Chance"
One of the reviews
This movie is basically a documentary with actors.........and very well thought out........it is not for the feint of heart or for people that demand "happy-endings". It is thought-provoking and will not leave a dry-eye in the house. The casting is first-rate, as is the attention to detail..... so many of these type of movies lose a lot due to poor continuity. Kevin Bacon does a superb job, as does the supporting cast.....My family recently had a son of a friend killed in Iraq while serving in the Marines, and the images seen in this movie parallel the emotions we observed our friends family endure. It is a fine rendition to honor all those from our country all who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
