This is a problem that every
WHFB is very aware of so, coming from
40k, you can be excused for not preparing for this.
Normally, when assembling a
WHFB unit with dynamic poses, you assemble them in chunks, checking as you go to make sure they rank up. Then, most people write/paint a number on the underside of their bases which correspond to a certain place on the movement tray. Keep trying, you might find a setup that works, then you can number them, to make sure you arrive at the same setup every time you deploy.
However, as it seems you're playing with friends, and lenient ones at that, I'm not sure if they'd mind if you simply ranked the first rank up and then dumped the rest in a pile behind. Make sure to keep a tally of how many are left though, it'd be hard to tell at a glance
