He's not, but then I think that may be because he didn't exist as an urban legend when I was a kid, what with having only originated in 2009.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

The game is ok at making you jump if you play it late at night and mildly inebriated... but the Slenderman himself isn't that scary - it's the shock of him appearing, not him being scary.
As for the urban myth, I'd never heard it until after I'd played the game, so I can't say if the myth was scarier.

People are obsessing because kids can play it on thier phones on the bus or at school. Its just angry birds that kids can pretend to get scared at and the more 'urban myths' that come out the better it will sell. Its the computer game equivalent of the blair witch project. ...... and that was crap too

Slenderman isn't scary. Endermen, who are based on Slenderman, are most definitely scary.

Slenderman found his way into the newest Call of Cthulhi LCG box. Not sure how I feel about that.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Ultramarine Librarian with Freaky Familiar

Maybe the appeal of Slenderman is his versatility? I mean... it's pretty much the perfect monster for this generation. Not really that scary so that anyone can get into it, can appear -anywhere- so he can be applied to any setting, easy to draw, has no characterization and no real powers besides teleportation.
Where some people see Slendy as bland I see him as a blank slate. He can be as scary as you want him to be (And he can be really fricking scary) or as tame as you want him to be. Essentially, he's a monster that we can put a bit ourselves in.
