I don't have the money for the necron codex just yet but I would love help picking an HQ just to start me off, if anyone could help by telling me which ones are really amazing or just generally what the play style for each of them is like so that I could make a better choice starting this out

I already have a GK army but its been long enough, I need to start my second and necrons are my far my next favorite choice ^.^ they look so fun

Tbh, the best way to get a good HQ is a 2-in-1 deal: Buy an Annihilation Barge.

The AB is one of the best things in 40k, it's 90 points of sheer awesomeness, but wait, there's more! Since you aren't building it as a CCB (it's a multi-part kit) you get a generic Overlord with res-orb and Warscythe, the best HQ you can get. And even better, it's a PLASTIC overlord, not a finecrap one!

The named ones are "cool", but they are just... inferior to a pimped generic Overlord with Warcythe, ResOrb, MSS and 2+/3++ save thanks to upgrades.

Warcythe: +2 Str and AP1 and you roll 2 dice for penetration, your overlord will be wasting stuff with Str7 left and right.

Res-Orb: Required if you bring a unit of Lychguard, Immortals with him. Ressing everyone on a 4+ (including the Overlord) is a big plus.

MSS: One of the most gear in the game. If an enemy fails a Ld check with 3D6, not only will he not attack your Overlord, he will hit himself 1D3 times . Your overlord will kill stuff saying "Stop hitting yourself. Stop hitting yourself. Stop hitting yourself"

2+ / 3++ saves: Overlords have acces to armor upgrades so he has a 2+ Armor save and an Invulnerable save of 3++, so you can tank LOTS of stuff.

I agree. For an HQ choice - grab an Annihilation Barge and get a nice 2 for 1 deal. With taxes it comes out to be about $40 USD which is dirt cheap when you factor in the finecast generic overlord is $16+.

After that, I would actually recommend saving up for the Battle Force. 20 Warriors, 5 Scarabs, a Ghost Ark and 5 Immortals/Deathmarks is a nice, discounted way of building out a core force when starting out and the Annihilation Barge augments it nicely since it's one of the best models in our codex.

Until you get the codex, you can play around with armies and such via BattleScribe ( http://www.battlescribe.net/ ) which can give you some idea in terms of points and stats.

As an addendum to what previous posters have said, it is INCREDIBLY easy to model the kit so that you can use it as an annihilation barge or a command barge.

If you are going for looks, I recently got Illuminor Szeras. He is most likely the weakest HQ choice, but man do I love that model. I also like the looks of obyron. But don't have him yet. Oh, AMD yes, they are finecast, so......... Goodluck with that.....

Yep, buy a Battleforce and an AB and you've got yourself a perfectly viable army right there.

Although, you might want to consider running the Overlord as Nemesor Zandrekh if you don't plan on letting him get into CC.

He has the same wargear you'd want to give your Overlord (2+/3++ and a res orb) minus the warscythe and MSS. He only costs 5 points more than an equivalent Overlord and he has a kick ass special ability that lets you take one of a few special abilities from an enemy squad and give one of a few special abilities to a friendly squad.

Plus, his lore is awesome. He's basically a flying rodent gak insane old man who also happens to be a military genius.

This, as a start is a very good kit, however, BEWARE! do not glue the gun onto the vehicle, as you may want to use it as a CCB later on. I made that mistake.

ok so the generic overlord really is the best? I didn't believe that until this post :O I would have never thought a generic one would be the better one to buy

ok so new question what is a good buy list when it comes to when I want to ally them with my GK's?

A generic overlord isn't the "strongest" choice, but for 37.25 dollar you get an HQ and our strongest HS-choice

I prefer Nemesor as my HQ, but he's almost 20 dollar and that is without anything extra.
And Crons look so alike that it's quite easy to 'proxy' them for each other.

Worst case-scenario: You end up with a great Ann-Barge and a model you can use as a lord.

(This deal is even better in my country, when I buy the package from inet-stores it's 26 dollar for the Barge).

Overlord
2 x 5 Warriors with Nightscythes
Anni barge

You can get that from : 1 Anni barge box, 2 night scythes plus 1 warrior box.

well im not looking for the cheapest, I have the money for it ^.^ im looking for the best I want to start off with as powerful of a line up as I can honestly, I try to buy the best army I can to start then I worry about changing it to fit my local competition once I learn to play them but I don't want to just make a cheap army that is ok to start off with because then I have to buy everything else anyway

Well, if you're looking for awesome models, get some old metal Immortals (ten or so), and two Deathmark/Immortal boxes, a Night Scythe kit and an Annhi Barge kit.

Use them and a scavenged Necron Warrior body to build yourself;

Anrakyr (using the Annhi Overlord and some bits)
Harbinger of Despair
10 Deathmarks
10 Pyrrean Eternals in Night Scythe
Annihilation Barge

This gives you a powerful Necron list that's allies-legal, covers some of the weaknesses of Necrons (Pyrrean Eternals is an upgrade Anrakyr gives a single Immortals unit for free that gives them Furious Charge and Counter Attack), has a nasty trick (Anrakyr can hijack enemy vehicles), something very very killy (AP1 template that can wound a chosen enemy unit on 2+, in a squad of rapid-fire snipers that can deep strike every turn) and the incredibly spammy Annihilation Barge that's effectively 90 points for an AV13 skimmer mounted with an S6 AP3 Heavy 2 gun and between two and eight twin-linked autocannons depending on how well you roll to hit.

Ooh, you want to know about strong lists?

HQ - Destroyer Lord(s)
Troops - 5x Warrior + Night Scythe (around 4)
Fast Attack - 6 Wraiths with D-Lord (2 to 3 groups)
Heavy - Annihilation Barges (3)

You get bonus points from me if you model the D-Lords with Wraith-tails
The problem with this list is that you can't really 'change' it to your meta.

Another problem is that it isn't a legal ally force.

Tbh the wraiths are nevr wrong and are so strong and cool but also alot of fun to play with.I always run a Destroyer Lord with Warscythe, Semp weave and mss with wraiths. They are really fast can soak tons of shots and you tend to always get them into close combat where they will wreck havoc. Next to that as many have said before me the Annihilation barge is a great vehicle and has tesla which imo is one of the most fun weapons to shoot
Get that+ some troops and you are ready to start playing and do well and then you can add extra and change after preference aftter
