A project that I’ve been working on-and-off on since the release of the Warhammer 40K Eldar Codex release is this new Farseer. It’s not strictly required for my army (as I already have a fairly functional Farseer-on-foot model, though that one will probably now be shifted to be a Spiritseer) but I wanted a reason to practice with clear resin and water effects. This is the end result of that work.

The idea is that the Farseer is a master of the four classical elements, borrowing another concept from L5R, consistent with the craftworld’s theme. He’s manipulating them in various ways; the bird represents command of the air, the best way I could think of to show that without duplicating the effects on the water, while also using the scroll it's carrying to stand in for the traditional banner most models in the army are carrying.

The base is done in clear resin; the waterspout effect is simply a clear plastic tube, bent into shape with a flame, that I then covered up with a few layers of water effects (from Woodland Scenics in this case). The painting I am somewhat happy with (the outer robe and the helmet bone color were done with an airbrush, and I’m getting a decent handle on it) while some parts I’m not (the orange/yellow gradient on the inner robe sucks) but that’s all practice and I’ll continue to get better with time.

Comments, feedback, etc. are always welcome.

Nice concept and the base is amazing!

I feel there could be more details on the model though (like the runes and trinkets on his arms)

This is awesome!

The only thing I don't see is his mastery of fire.

Is that represented through the colour of his robes?

The rocks represent earth I assume?

The water effect and the rocks are truly amazing.

I think the weapon also represents fire. I think it has a flame so that's a great way to represent the fire element! "KILL IT WITH FIRE!!"

The miniature is a joy to look at :') such a wonderful theme and base.

Well, my C&C is about the weapon: the blade could be painted with hot colors so it represents the mastery of fire even more

This is absolutely fantastic!!

Overal the whole piece just works perfectly, not the best Farseer i've seen painted, but the base is stunning. The firey robe bit looks like it could do with a little bit of touching up, blending a bit more maybe? But I wouldn't know how to do that.

Yeah, very very impressive piece of work!

That is just awesome. I don't think I have seen a base quite like that and it is just out of this world. Fantastic work!

Beautiful unit, the concept is executed really well and the base has to be one of the best I've seen. Awesome work sir!

It's so nearly there, but there are a few things that aren't quite singing like the base. The rune trinkets have been mentioned, and is that flame coming off the edge of the CCW? Doesn't really shine out like it should being one of the elements and all. The water is AMAZING though. Would love to know how you did it

As has been said that water is great and I particularly like the scroll that bird is carrying too. One thing that would do a lot for this model would be if that yellow/orange on the robe was a smoother blend.

Thanks, all. Comments follow:

First, thanks for all the "good jobs" and such. I very much appreciate them!

Second, I also appreciate all the constructive feedback. Lots of the stuff I was aware of:
-The yellow on the inner robe was poorly done; I was just having a hard time with it and wanted the piece finished.
-I did forget to add detail to the wrist runes; I'll see if I can go back and do a bit of color there
-I agree that the fire on the blade is both too small and too dim. I should probably have made it bigger; next time I'll also be brave enough to try some OSL on it as well
-The blade is green because that's the theme of the army ("jade" weapons); all power/special melee weapons in the army are green in color. The flame coming from it was intended to be the "fire" element, it just needed to be bigger and more evident

A "how to" was asked for, so: the water was done rather simply. I first built the base, including everything that's not water. This included the rocks, the gravel under the water, and the plants sticking out of it. All of that got painted before doing anything with the water. Then, using scotch tape, I built a round "well" around the base, extending above the level that I wanted the water at. I then filled that well with clear resin and let it cure. It actually had a leak (which meant I had to effectively "carve" it off of the table ) and I did a second layer of resin because of it; the resin filled in just fine without any visible layer line.

After that, I drilled a small hole into the resin and glued in (using white glue) a piece of clear plastic tube that I had bent into the desired shape with a flame. Using a bottle of Water Effects (from Woodland Scenics) I covered the tube with a cylinder of the "liquid" and used a tool to move it into a spiraling, whipping pattern. I also placed some on top of the water base to create the waves.

After it all cured and I did a couple of additional layers, I hit it all with a watered down blue wash (Secret Weapon Sapphire) and drybrushed it white. Done!

Fantastic work. I'd love to see lightning jumping from his outstretched hand. That in my mind would complete the Farseerer's elemental mastery. But mostly I just want to see someone who knows how to paint and model actually pull off lightning.

That is a really awesome model. The farseer himself has a pretty cool thing going for him but the base is even better! Might just have to steal that idea sometime
