yeah,
So I had the idea of dual/multiple ownership of the first post in a thread.
Basically when you create/edit the post, it would be great if you could list users who also have permission to edit the post.
I've not seen this on any other forums yet, and it could increase the social aspect of the forum.

There would be multiple uses for this
-This would enable more than one person to update a news thread.
-Tale of gamer’s threads.
-Battle reports could be edited by both players.
-Tournament threads can have multiple organisers who can update the details

Yes, this sounds like great idea.

Honestly though, I don't see any gain in this idea.

yeah,
The uses are subtile, but not every idea has to be obvious!

I've listed a few examples above on how it would be helpful.. but I've just thought of two more..
- It also would allow a mega thread to be passed on from a retiring OP with out the first post going stale.
- allow the burden of updating a kickstarter thread so be shared amongst 3 or 4 people.

There's an example right now in the FB section. Luna created a thread and doesn't quite keep it up to date anymore, so it was more or less cut and pasted to be picked up by someone new who wanted to keep it running.

I like the idea.
Great for battreps, and campaigns.
On a similar note, it would be good to be able to create a place holder for a friend too so that he could place his armylist, overview, tactics whatever into each spot allocated to him.

Honestly though, I don't see any gain in this idea.

I see a great one in that it allows for two people to run any of the "X Newsletter"/"X Game--New Releases on Page X" threads.

This would also be handy for Kickstarters; to allow for round-the-clock updates from authorized agents.

Very good for batreps imho.

I think this is potentially a very good idea.

Let's assume it is very difficult to implement, however. Is it a good enough idea to outweigh that?

The main use would be for updating N&R OPs. Sometimes, OP loses interest in a topic or has no intention of stewardship. Does allowing OP to share editing privileges on the first post of a thread address these problems?

Not necessarily -- the root problem is OP's disinterest. If OP is not that interested in the topic, OP is probably also not that concerned about choosing other, more responsible Dakkanauts to share editing privileges.

More interestingly, this would be a nice feature for mods to allow self-identified replacement OPs editing privileges. Oprhaned OPs are not exactly plaguing Dakka, however, so -- again, assuming this is very difficult to implement -- I don't think the benefit outweighs the cost.

N&R however is run pretty tightly as it is (from what I can see).
A decent % of N&R come from regular/established posters.
Those that arent and which lose original OP interest, will slide down the N&R forum fairly quickly (unless its amazing news), hence not really a problem.

NTS: most N&R OPs are engaged and active, a few not choosing a decent lieutenant shouldnt detract from a good idea?

The trouble is, where else is there application? I don't think BatReps is too pressing, either.

Agreed, I wouldnt class the idea as pressing nor required for most threads but if as you say, it is relatively easy to implement, I think it would be great.
As Panic said for Tourney organisers handy too.

However realistically it would be for:
Reps, N&R, tourneys (some blogs?).

I know it doesn't directly address what you're asking for, but one of the purposes of making the article system a wiki was so that people could collaborate on stuff like that (battle reports, etc).

Obviously articles have their own issues about being isolated from the forums, but they do exist as a cool way to collaborate on things should anyone want to.

Although I do agree that especially for News and Rumors uber-threads, it would be godsend to allow multiple-access to edit the first post. But I don't have any idea how difficult that would theoretically be to implement.

It might work, I will investigate this, but it will need some fairly hefty tweaks to pull off.

It is still in the pipeline, but I've been snowed under with database and email updates and tweaks, and next urgently have to fix a bunch of mobile related bugs before I can move onto the fun stuff like this
