Hello Everyone,
I'm wondering if there's such a thing as a liquid masking agent. I'd like something able to fill the fine lines in my models, such as the recess lines between armor panels on dark eldar raiders and such, but I'd like to be able to remove it easily. I want to base the ship black, somehow fill those lines, spray another color over the panels, then remove the masking agent. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I might use for this?
Thanks in advance

I just had an idea but may well be a stupid idea... have you thought of soap? Not the liquid soap but a bar of soap. When you leave it in the water after a while it becomes softer and can be somehow modeled. You could try to spread it on your surface and the soap will naturally fill the lines. Then it could be probably be removed with water. However this is veeeery experimental. I don't think that the soap should remove the color but you need to try it on something that you don't care about, also to test if it really goes away easily (the spray layer could make it more resistant).

If you are going to try this let me know!

Google is your friend. Google "liquid masking tape". There's a ton of it out there.

Yeah I've seen the guy who does the youtube videos for BuyPainted.com use it.

You can see it in this video at about the 4 minute mark.

Interceptor Drones can disembark at any point during the Sun Shark's move (even though models cannot normally disembark from Zooming Flyers).

Go to your nearest art supply store. They'll have more than one type. It's easily available.

Far to laborious....inking the panel lines would be faster, and if done with oils cleaner.

This article should give you some ideas;

edit; dont use soap as was suggested; any ideas what mixing soap and paint does? its not ideal for the paint to be mixing with soap, the adhesion and surface tension will be all over the place, and it might foam up while the paint is being applied.

Liquid mask is very goopy & hard to control for such fine work.
Like Redfinger, I suggest using an oil wash.

Check out my gallery here
Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!

I'd also suggest painting the panel lines last, instead of masking them and painting the panels. Oils would work well, but if you don't want to bother with the thinners, you can use gouache to the same effect. It's basically opaque watercolor, so you can just smear a bunch in the recess, then wipe up any overspill with a damp paper towel or cotton bud/swab. As with the oil wash, you'll want to varnish both before and after applying them, for best results (they'll remain water-soluble and need a protective shell to stay put).
