Hi guys/galls,

I was wondering if someone has any experience using a pre heresy army vs post heresy armies.
I'm starting with an all pre-heresy Emperor's Children army, and I was wondering if it would even be remotely fun/competitive vs my normal meta (SM, GK, Tau, Orks, Nids). Mainly Tau..

Because if it just doesnt work, I need to consider constructing an army list that will also work very well as clear proxy's not causing confusion using the normal SM codex. (palatine squad becoming SM veterans eg.)

On another note, what would be a good guideline for a nice fluffy EC list? I'm planning on getting at least: palantine squad, 2x relic speeder, contemptor dread, fullgrim, 5 Cataphractii Terminator and an assault squad. But dont really know where to go from there.

But lets focus on the pre vs post heresy question at first.

Cheers!

I may be mistaken, but are Legion lists/rules even compatible with 40k ones? I think you may need to run it as an C:SM list.

They apparently were never designed with 40k in mind nor tested for balance. It is purely built for 30k vs 30k.

Saying that however, no reason you can't have a friendly game with some time travelling Legionaires.
Forgeworld mention in the HH: Betrayal FAQ & Errata that both sides should use the Age of Darkness Force Org as well as some friendly modifications to the 40k codex to be more fitting with the era.

By the 37 keys of Tzeentch,We open the way for our brothers,
By the 1000 whispers of Slaanesh we call to them,
By the 12 plagues of Nurgle we fell their enemies,
And by the mighty axe of Khorne we cut open the world for them!

I wouldn't hesitate to use the Heresy army list in a regular 40k game, so long as it's a friendly match and you aren't too concerned with balance.

Based on what I've heard and looking at the list myself (I haven't played a 30k game yet, because damn is it expensive), the legion list is probably weaker than a C:SM list. Infantry-wise, so long as you're leaving out Primarchs, you don't gain a whole lot. You also lose ATSKNF, which is a really big deal. As for vehicles, they're pretty similar to what's available for C:SM, plus some Forgeworld Land Raider variants and Contemptor dreads, none of which are considered OP when added to a C:SM army. To me, it mostly looks like your standard Forgeworld fare: overpriced or weaker than a 6th edition codex. Your mileage may vary.

Anyway my friends and I fully plan on playing 30k vs. 40k when our armies are ready, to represent the legions during the Great Crusade, fighting Orks and Eldar and the like. If nothing else it will look cool.

Thanks guys

I gues I will try to build a list that is competitive in both scenes (since fw contemptors and special landraiders are legit in both 30k and 40k). This is probably not going to be easy, but I'll give it some hours to try and find a good army list.

So on that note, how competitive are contemptors in 40k? (never even used a normal dread before). I want to add at least one, but perhaps I can go for 3 if they are not only cool but also competitive.

Any tips from your end building a fluffy and cool 30k emperors children army, that would also do moderate to good in the 40k scene (using C:SM and applicable FW rules)? Anything I should definitely add or not add? The models are expensive as you all know, so I dont want to buy something that will never see battle due to uselessness.

Thanks in advance!
