Hey guys,

I have noticed something with the 6th edition codexs regarding character stats. Back in 2nd edition you used to get anywhere between 1 -10 wounds, this seemed to drop off and in 5th most Hq and special characters had a max of 3 (well my SW, orks and IG did). Looking through the Eldar and chaos dex's it now seems some dudes are rocking 4 wounds.

So will the likes of Gaz get into 5 wounds or is 4 the limit?

I can't speak for the Chaos Dex, but there's only 3 models that have more than 3 wounds: The Avatar, Prince Yriel and the Wraithknight. Three isn't a lot and I think the increased wounds for these guys are justified, in the same way as stuff like Daemon Princes are.

I imagine Ghaz will have four wounds. He is, like Yriel, the most combat focussed Special Character in the army. And he is "da biggest and baddest Ork".

Basic Tau commander has 4 wounds which I do find quite a suprise, but again its only that and the riptide that has more then 3 (of course varients of the commander included as well). Daemons are different as there is a lot of big gribllies in it, but the heralds only have two wounds base and the princes are 4 and the GD's are 5.

Do not forget about the Tyranid Codex as well. Hive Tyrants are rocking four wounds and Tervigons are rocking six (and I just picked those two because they are headquarters; the Tyranid codex is not lacking in the many-wound gribblies department).

I've noticed this too. But it isn't just Wounds - other stats have gone up too. WS, BS, I... not all on any one character that I can think of, but there's a definite creep up. It's probably related to the increased focus on challenges where the designers noticed that there wasn't much making characters "different" in rules terms.
In particular the Daemon Prince statline got pushed up in a big way.

Yup, ghazzy has four.

Some of the big Daemon gribblies are high-wounds, high toughness.

it seems that every codex has one character with +1 wound over the normal combat focused HQ. DE has vect, CWE has Yiriel, CSM has Abby, SW has logan

CSM demon princes only have 4 wounds (which can only be tied by a juggernaught lord). Not all new codices are going wound crazy.

That's because none of them have Eternal Warrior. They seem to do either Eternal Warrior or swap it out for an additional wound (see 4th and 5th ed Tyranid Warriors for another example).

Well, tyranid are coming out soon, and there's been a decided push to bring apocalypse/epic units into regular 40k.

Stands to reason there will be a W10 TMC coming up in the next codex. Something from apocalypse or epic ported into the main game.

Not that soon.

They have a 5th ed codex, and there are still 4th ed codexes needing an update.

I'm sure you're right when they DO get one though.

Tau commanders had 4 wounds back in 4th edition (at least the expensive version did, remember back when you could pay less points to get a commander with worse stats?). I am almost sure that the black book codex for 3rd edition had space marine commanders with 4 wounds. Imperial guard had 3 if I recall correctly. So 4 wounds for a top tier commander has been around for a long time.

Also I had no idea that Aun`Va had 4 wounds... come to think of it I don't think I ever actually read his rules. Maybe I did, but they were so bad that my brain pressed the "auto erase" key (I think that happened to the special issue weapons as well. I swear I read the statline of the dang things at some point).
