I have heard many a variation of the pronunciation of tyranid. Pronounced like tyrant and tyranny I personally think its tyrant because they are the tyrants causing tyranny not the other way round. What do you think?

Teeranids.

Their name is derived from the first planet the Imperium lost to them. Tyran.

Tyrannical tyrants causing titanic tyranny. Now that that is out of my system, I pronounce it like tyranny. I think it is taking tyrants, dropping the ts, and boot-strapping it to the nids part of hominids to "create" a new species.

Looks like I have stumbled on the name of their first victims, Tyran. I start babbling about creating a species name from our viewpoint, and find out the fluff had a planet conveniently named Tyran.

Of all the words in 40k which get weird pronunciations, this isn't one I've ever heard differ. Everyone I've ever heard say it, regardless of accent or nationality, has pronounced the 'tyr' in tyranid as though it rhymes with beer and fear.

Pretty much everyone I know, myself included, pronounces the "Tyran" part the same as "tyran" in tyranny, I've only ever heard people pronounce it "teeranid" in a couple of videos online.

I have a peanut allergy. It's really inconsiderate.

TEER-ah-Nid.

So named for the Research Station Tyran (TEE-ran), which was the first recorded battle between the Imperium and Hive Fleet Behemoth, the first Hive Fleet to arrive.

Do we know how Tyran was pronounced or that Tyranid is pronounced the same as Tyran?

I noticed that 90% of people who pronounce it "teer-uh-nid" are American or canadian.
Over here most people say "tih(soft i)-run-ids"
I firmly say it "tie-run-ids"... But then again I pronounce tyranny the same way... Derp

Looking to canon sources like DoW 2 and Space marine as well as the space hulk audiobook the definitive pronounciation is teer uh nid.

Case closed.

I see "teer" and "tear" and I think that comes across either as more enforced than the posters intended, or I just say it a lot quicker. I would put it as:

Tih-ra-nid

"Tih" as in "Tih-mmy fell down the well".

Also, I think quite a few people are making the mistake that "tyranny" pronounces the y the same way as "tyrant". It doesn't. Tyranny uses the same "tih" sound I've been using.
