I was just curious how big or small of matches people like to play.

The Emperor may be able to see everything but do you think he can see why kids love the taste of Cinnamon Toast Crunch?

I don't get to play often, so when I can do it, I like to do it big.

Anywhere between 1500-2000 on club nights. But 2500+ for when the kitchen table is free for the weekend!

1. Go to FLGS on a 40K game night.
2. Announce to no one in particular "I have over 10,000 points of Space Marines".
3. Sit back and watch as some 30-ish Neckbeard who still lives with his parents not only disputes your claim, but goes on to describe his 30,000 points of Blood Angels and how he has been playing since Rogue Trader days... And yet you will have never seen him either play 40K or that army.
4. From here, you have several options. Continue the conversation, or just end it. Either way, I guarantee you will waste 1+ hour of your life talking to this guy. Have fun!

Yeah I like to play around 1500 pts. Although I haven't done anything bigger than that it's nice though because then I can get 2 maybe 3 games in at the store. I like switching up who I play against

I like 1750 best. It lets you bring plenty of toys to the table. Any higher tends to get take too long for your average club night, which is where most of my gaming is done

If I have a weekend free, larger games are great fun - especially doubles, if everyone brings 1500 or 2000 points to the table .

1500. It's at the point where you can start bringing some fun toys in addition to your main force, but need to make some hard choices on what to leave behind.

Also, some armies scale far, far better than others beyond 1500pts and 40k's already sketchy balance goes out the window.

2000 for a normal game, double FOC allows for many more toys. If I had the free time I'd play 5k+ games all the time.

My friends and I play 2000 since we don't get to play often, so might as well make it big when we have the chance.

I'm really excited for this friday, both of us are going to be playing planetstrike for the first time with 4000 points, which is going to be ridiculous.

Outer Space, Apparently

wierdly I like 800 point games most.

yup, you read it, not 8000, 800

I just think they are a great combination of tactical coherency between your forces (I find that big games generally require a bit less tactics due to your large number of units) and the feel of big game fun (for some reason ). it also allows you to take a piece of armour or a light flyer, which often is the star of the match. I think it's just a nice balanced game.

I plan my 40k armies for 1500pt games. But because most if not all the gamers I know want to play bigger games. So I plan for 800-1500pts but buy like 2000 to 3000 points of models.

I've sold so many armies. :(

This is exactly my feelings. I like 1000pt - 1500pt games the most, as they require hard decisions when building lists. Also, small events, mistakes and turns of fate in the game are crucial and can have big effects on the outcome, as there is little of your army you can 'afford' to lose at that scale.

And as you say, balance becomes an issue for several armies when you get into games of 1750pts+

I do like a big game of apocalypse every now and then though, just for a laugh!

1750

1500 i always feel gimped. I either feel i dont have enough toys to bother, or i dont have enough troops. Or, i have ~100pts lying around and im like "Well...dafuq i do with these?" lol.

At 1750 i find it really easy to round off the points. That extra 250pts is usually all i needed to finish off every list i end up building, and i feel like you cant do anything sneaky until this point level because most "sneaky" things cost 400-700pts on their own lol

I despise double FOC unless its a BIG game (2500+) because at 2000 all it does is allow some races like Nidz to pull some uber cheese, while others really have no benefit from it with the points allowed.
That being said, i may like large games but i hate Apoc. Strength D and the additional rules like Gargantuan Creatures n whatnot just skew the game so much it doesnt even feel like the same game anymore...that and theres 1000x the rules bickering than there is in normal games lol. FW, fine. 3000+ games, fine. Apoc only units? Not fine.

Need to be able to pick more than one...

I love smaller games at 1k, and massive apocalypse games - because thats where Orks really shine and are fun to play. I hate 1850 and avoid it if I can, because at that level you have enough for all *your* toyz but I've either maxxed mine out at 1k or simply can't get any that are worth taking.

Our local stores run 1500-1750 point tournaments, so if I play that points range I'm practising. My preference is 1850-2500. I started in 40k just so I could get into Ard Boys; got to play in one before they discontinued it... grrrrrr... but I still lpve.playing the points level.

I like 1000-1500, as it allows you to use the fun stuff, whereas at most lower levels, most of yours points are in troops and HQ(especially with Marine armies). 500 can also be fun, but only with a modified force org, as otherwise you are again limited to minimum requirements.

Untile chaos got their 4th helldrake and 4th squad of oblits I liked 1999 the most . Now I like 1500 the most , it limits what other armies can take while my cheap IG works rather well. I would like to play 1350-1400 the most , because it would cut a lot of stuff from tau .

So far (as I've only been able to play larger games by borrowing other people's stuff) I prefer 500-750. It feels compact and fun and at anything above 1000 the people at my store bring cheesy gimmick lists that I don't enjoy playing against.

(3 Wraithknights/Riptides at 1k points isn't fun. :C)

(soon to be) 500 points.

1500pts for me. Not too large, so doesn't take that long to play, and you can still have plenty of good stuff.

Though ~2000pts is good if there is plenty of time and space.

lol I knew this would happen! I wasn't sure how to word it since there is the option to play all the in between points.

I think I like to play around 1500 pts because I'm Chaos because all the units are pretty expensive and I can't really get many troops out of a smaller game.
