Looking at starting either a PanO or Combined army, but the starters for both are out of stock, and it may be some time before I can get hold of one. What should I get for a small, playable army in the interim, and which will also be useful when/if I can get the starter box?

I think my friend is looking at Nomads or Ariadna. We were originally thinking we would just each get a starter, and go from there, but we're having to rethink that, since the respective starters we can't get right now. So, what would be a reasonable pairing for each us, if we were looking to spend about $60-80 (MSRP)?

have you checked ebay? My Tohaa starter was hard to find, but I found one there and for a good deal.

To be fair, they get restocked every two weeks so he would not have to wait long/trawl eBay.

That said here is another alternative:
PanOceania Starter Pack and Combined Army Starter Pack and Nomad(vanilla) and Vanilla Ariadna.

Please do bear in mind that as of right now? These starter packs are very likely "on the chopping blocks" to be removed at this point in time.
As of this moment, we know that the Alguaciles and Mobile Brigada(generic Nomad Starter Pack) are being redone, with the Alguaciles getting their own box.
We know that the Morat are getting a complete overhaul.
We know that Fusiliers are getting an overhaul and a boxed set at some point.
We know that Tunguska(Securitate) are getting their own Sectorial list and likely revamped models to match.
We know that RussAriadna is getting its own Sectorial and likely new Kazaks as part of their own Starter Pack as well to match.

Yeah, I could have checked War Store, or Miniature Market. Trying to support the FLGS by doing more than just playing there though.

And yeah, I'm in the US.

Honestly, if it's so bad that your FLGS can't keep things in stock?

I'd contact them and explain that you're getting a bit disheartened by the situation. I've got the same problem going on right now with one of my LGS as they've only got starter packs and a single rulebook on the shelves.
No blisters for a game like Infinity or the other boxed sets is problematic.

The FLGS tries, but can be . . . . iffy. We have a list of what he can get in (which is several days out of date at the moment, but probably fairly accurate), so if, for example, I know his distributor does not have either of the Combined Army starters, ordering them just means that I get to wait.

At any rate, it seems like the main advice I have gotten so far is either to look to ebay, or try something else. Or, wait, and hope the FLGS can fulfill the order in a timely fashion, which their distributor seems reluctant to do sometimes. All I really wanted was advice on a couple of blisters that each of us could buy that would be useful if we ever got the starter boxes.

ETA - Right now, the store does not carry any Infinity stuff. I live in a gaming desert, more or less - in town, I have one store, which does not stock it, might order it, and charges $5/table to play. (Might be $10 now; the rate may have gone up.) The local comic stores don't stock it, nor will they order it. Where I play more days which is about 30 miles awy, he carries GW, and I can get him to stock some WM/H stuff, but after that, it gets iffy. The other store in the area (also 30 miles away) stocks more WM/H stuff, but mainly runs on Magic.

Gaming around here is kind of like buying a model T - any game I want, so long as it is 40k or Magic.

I'm kind of curious as to which distributor they use if that is having such a problem.

Alliance is his main one. And while the owner can be a bit of a flake at times, I have watched him submit orders, and get 30% of it. The rest comes later, over several months. Building a game community is hard when the store can't get anything in stock. (The store does okay, because it is games and hobbies, and the model trains do well enough for the doors to stay open.)

And yes, we have tried to get him to change distributors. Hasn't happened yet.
