Might try the .hack series', but I'm definitely put off by the game tie ins. Never enjoyed movies or series that had that sort of 'split medium storytelling' thing.

...Yeah. So just watched the first episode of Log Horizon.

I have to say, it didn't pull me in the same way SAO's first episode did.

Now, I'm not bashing the show, or saying that it's not going to have a deep storyline or engaging characters, but so far it's just show itself to be full of generic Anime Stereotype characters- the non-loli loli, the burly perv, the preturnatural strategist nerd, Genkis in positions of power and people all just acting sort of... annoyed in being potentially trapped in a videogame.

It's shallow.

I hope it deepens up, but their introductions don't fill me with hope.

@Anvildude: When you said you were gonna watch LH, I was kinda expecting this SAO and LH are completely different, imho the only similarity is the setting, the whole "We are stuck in a MMO" thing.

LH is more about "the game" and what the people do when they aren't in a "If we die here, we die forever" situation and how they change it: the strategies, team work, the world is all very MMO like, and they even come up with some explanations that honestly "blew up my mind". The romance is minimal too, except for some shipping. In short, be ready for a completely different experience.

Oh, LH has Rudy. Glorious, glooooooorious Rudy.

Funny...I felt the same when I finished SAO's first season, especially since SAO has its own stereotypes. Just off the top of my head...Mary Sue main character so bad even Matt 'Spiritual Liege' Ward would flip the table, a generic harem, a generic storyline...yeah, I'm sticking to .hack// thank you very much.

Oh, I just finished KLK.

It's ok. It really does get better after a while.

What really bothers me though is that they didn't use that bullet.
I mean, you can't show off some gubbin' saying "this thing is very dangerous and should only be deployed when it's absolutely necessary" and then never try to use it, even when the world is about to end.
Also, the series doesn't wrap up what happens to Revocs or that assistant lady. I suppose that could be for the OVA or a second season, but I have no idea how they are going to do that without senketsu.

I was attempting to utilize Mary Sue litmus tests to counter the "Mary Sue" claim, but they're all based on the idea that you're the creator of the character, and I can't figure out how to parse a character that is playing an RPG in a Fictional Anime.

I'll go over some of the things, though- "Chosen One", "Dual Wielding" (the only one in the world, which is even worse), yeah. Those're pretty bad Mary Sue markers. However, most of the show, he single-wields. No katanas (well, borrowed from a friend, but again, this is where the fact that it's an in-universe videogame, where a lot of the 'mary sue' markers are just basic videogame tropes). Most Powerful- sorta. However, the character is genuinely humble, loses a ton, often because of his own mistakes or pride, etc. etc.

Not sure at all where you're getting the Harem from- there's 2, maybe 3 legitimate romantic interests- one 'forbidden' and acknowledged as such, and most of the other 'harem-like' events are essentially flirting. Heck, the main character ends up marrying his primary love interest halfway through the first arc.

I think... maybe... I think a lot of the difference of opinion comes from the presence or lack of traditional "Anime" tropes. SAO, I think, draws a bit more on classic Western themes- like I said, I saw a lot of stuff I recognized from Science Fiction literature- ideas of what it is to be human, control of world vs mercy of world, how societies react when technology causes massive change... And the characters, I think, were more rounded. We spend most of our time with a single character, as he travels through the world, interacting with others. The case of repeating characters is small, and every time you see them, something has changed, to sort of show how they've been living away from the main story. And because of this focus on a single main character, you get to see how he grows- how he starts off just as powerless as everybody else. How his overconfidence later causes him to lose people he cares about. How he goes on a self-punishing journey attempting penance, and fails to gain it, but eventually grows into his role of 'Savior'. Even in the second arc, we see him growing and learning more- this time coming from the lesson of "You are the only one who can change things" to "You must accept the help of others to succeed".

From what I've seen of Log Horizon... It's sort of... just an Anime. I doubt there's going to be much character change or development. The Boistrous Perv will probably show "Hidden depths" just to offset his goofy behavior. The main love interest will continue to be all Dere-Dere. The main character will be all "I'm the smartest there is, and my brains will solve all the problems" and be right. The Guild Leader Genki-twins will always remain Guild Leader Genki-twins. Whereas SAO uses the setting of 'trapped in a video game' to explore themes of human psychology, Log Horizon seems to be using the setting simply to 'explain away' the over-the-top, nobody-dies Anime-ness. There's no attempt at portraying anything realistically- the weasels shoot frikkin lazers, even. To be honest, unless someone can tell me that there's significant story development within the first 7 episodes, I'm probably not going to watch the rest of it. SAO pulled me in from the first. Log Horizon almost spat me out.

I'd love to get into .hack//, because I think it's a lot closer to SAO in theme and feel- but again, I think I'd just be disappointed by having to play a game or watch a let's play to get the rest of the story.

If we're talking about OST, I'm absolutely in love with Blumenkranz- Ragyou's theme.

What are your guys opinions on School Days? Just wondering, as many people say it's good and others say it is the bottom end of anime. I'm wandering what the dakka Otakus think of it.

On the subject of SoL genre anime, I think Golden Time is really good, Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu and Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu Purezza are really quite entertaing.

Golden Time was a really good anime, I agree. For me, Non Non Biyori is the pinnacle of Slice of Life anime .
As for School Days...

this sums it up quite nicely ; I couldn't say it better myself Tanako.

I am not sure if I am suppose to take the reply as good or bad.

Stupidly, against mine and your guys better judgement, I decided to watch School Days and it's OVAs with my friend ... I can quite happily say that I have never been so angry and irritated by a character such as Makoto ever before! He's so ... That said, the ending was very satisfactory!

Now I am just getting started on Koi to Sonkyo to Chocolate, pretty good so far.

I only saw some episodes of 'school days'. I suppose it's less a terrible anime so much as no characters I really liked except for maybe one or two (kiyoura the little girl). Everybody talks about makoto but I never hear anybody complain about those girl bullies who were actually pretty bad too. That scene where they taped sex scenes of girl students with other people and forced that one girl to cry made me want to beat the crap out of all those girls and normally I hold back from violence against women being a guy and all. When you're dealing with supreme b*tches though sometimes it has to be done. Hope that's ok with all of you.

@Anvildude - Blumenkranz is my favorite theme as well. Ever since I first heard a tiny bit at episode.... uff, what was it? 3? 5? It was near the beginning, it became my favorite theme. Next is Nui's theme. The bad guys always have the coolest ones (Yeah, Satsuki doesn't win this round )

@flamingkillamajig - Oh don't worry. I think we can all agree "gender equality" isn't only for the good stuff: If said b*tches do something as horrible as that, they should have their faces slammed against a wall. Repeatedly.

Basically view it as Pulp fiction to a degree. The story does not follow a cohesive timeline and gives different perspectives from different characters. Also, the second season goes into detail later what is going on.

No idea where that came from, tbh. It was thanks to the 2nd season that I started understanding WTF was going on. I guess it's because it isn't 100% mystery anymore but you must see it. ALL OF IT. And there's a certain background story that's brutal, but in the manga? I tried looking at it and after a certain scene I just went "NOPE, NOPE, NOPE, NOPE, feth IT, I'M OUT". Damn, Higurashi is awesome.

And speaking of awesome things... "No Game No Life" once again shows the MC has his priorities straight:
