Subject: Rust-Oleum White Plastic Primer :(

I just primed some new models with this. It's been drying for over an hour, and it feels sticky. I haven't attempted to paint yet (not sure how long I should wait). Has anyone else used this? Does it actually dry, or does it stay sticky? If so, will that be a problem for painting? I'm thinking that if I get a base coat, then that should take care of the problem. I hope this isn't an expensive mistake!

What primer exactly did you use?
Got pictures?
Whats the general condition of where you are painting (humidity temperature etc)
after you primed did it cake on and obscure details?
Generally shouldn't take more than an hour to be able to handle it. and a full 24 for it to cure fully (iirc)

It can happen especially if it is too humid out. I live in CO and I only Prime at dusk or when it cools off. Humidity will cause this sometimes, it could be because the primer is self is bad.

It's called 'Rust-Oleum Plastic Primer', and says, "for ultimate adhesion on plastic surfaces." Sorry, I don't have any pics or an available camera atm. It is warm and slightly humid, but I've primed with Krylon in this weathe with no problem. I think it's the actual primer. I've used their automotive primer before, but the auto parts store only had this in stock; I didn't think it would be an issue, my models being plastic. I just think trying to paint over a sticky surface is going to be a nightmare.

Sounds like its supposed to chemically melt to the plastic. you might be boned. try another test piece on a sprue and see if it happens again. but try to let it sit for 24hours. if your lucky it will set and no details will be lose. at worse you could try to seal it with a matt varnish and paint over that. but tzeench knows what it might do.

It it doesn't work out, get some simple green and dunk them for a few hours, clean them up and let them dry. Then use Krylon.

If it's an enamel primer (sounds like it) then simple green is really going to struggle with it (I've found to do do SFA to enamels, unlike industrial degreasers - purple power, etc).

purple super clean from walmart is $7 in the automotive section, it will take off any and all paint after a couple hour soak, without deactivating your glue... you may need a tooth brush to get all the paint off the mini after the soak

99% of my paints are the $0.77 to $1.50 acrylics from generic hobby stores (Hobby Lobby around here) or department stores. I don't believe in paying 4x the price for something just because it is sold in the game store.
My primer is Army Painter and comes from the game store. It is several times the cost of the hardware store primers but I have found it is worth it. It tends to be much finer and not fill in the details. Since it is so fine it dries very quickly. It takes paint well and really, and a can of it goes a long way so I can tolerate the price. If anyone knows of a cheap primer that is just as good I am eager to try it.
Hope you can get the primer off, or get it to dry. I bought some primed minis used that I am still fighting with. I soaked them in Simple Green for several days and ran them through my ultrasonic cleaner and barely got any of it off. I have not found Power Purple yet, but might need to track some down. At least the previous owner said it was primer, it's a bit shiny for primer and I can't get paint to stick. Thinking he might have used cheap spray paint.
Don't put them in a toaster oven to dry then forget about them until you smell smoke. Ruined a toaster oven that way, as well as the minis.

I had the same thing happen to some of my RW bikes. I picked up a can of Lowes brand paint (they had a flat black that came out just like chaos black) the paint was sticky it had spots of gloss was all bad. I ran some nulin oil was over it and that alone took care of most of my probs. The best paint ive used from any hardware/ department store is Krylon x2 flat black works great on spray covers a nice area and its the same as GW's chaos black primer.

I've used it. It takes about 24 hours to dry fully. After that, just go on painting like normal.

Meh, I know the style. It takes about a day or so to dry.
In the future, if you want to go cheap, buy Walmart brand spray paint. It's less than a dollar a can and it's amazing.
Get the matte finish. Notice the lid in the middle is matte and the lid on the right is gloss. Get the matte and you'll be fine.

I hope this was an attempt at humor...
Two things;
This paint is NOT PRIMER - the OP asked about primer.
(yes, primer is different than paint, Yes, I am sure. No, its not just marketing, its chemistry, yes you should use primer, ok, yes maybe you know a guy who does not, but yes you should - go ahead and search on it).
Second, I have used this paint, and find its pigment density and coverage to be quite poor. Its ok for some work on terrain pieces, but I have found it not to be worth my time for minis.
