Ok we'll here's a correction to my earlier post
It's awful to be the only girl in a game store especially since
I'm kind of shy and scared easily.

Welcome to dakka as well, and as far as game stores being a kinda "icky boy place" , maybe bring along a female friend that may have interest in the hobby..expand the female gamer population (lord knows that needs expanding)

Other than that, just don't be afraid..most the gamers are more afraid of you then you are of them

At anyrate, enjoy your stay here on Dakka

I'm sure they're more afraid of you then you are of them. Don't be shy most gamers are generally very nice and helpful.

Simple: convince your boyfriend to build a gaming table in his basement and play at home.

Unfortunately, you've already played at the store, so they've got your scent. I'd recommend boarding up your windows (don't be surprised if a group of them wander by and begin to slowly bang their fists against the window moaning, "Giiiiiirrrrrlllllll").

If you have to leave the house, carry a decent supply of deodorant sticks and at least a couple spray cans. Apply liberally to deter roamers.

I've never played in a store. I've never had a bad experience in one, but don't want to have one either.

Welcome to that most wretched hive of scum and villiany known as dakka.

In my experiance most players are middle aged, married with kids, and quite friendly. There is the odd pubesent one who is extremely shy but they are harmless and charming in their own timid puppy way.

I hope you enjoy the hobby.

Going to a gaming store is not unlike going to prison, in that they are both unisex, most residents have a bunker mentality, everyone is arguing about the rules, and questionable hygiene abounds. How good of an experience you have in both really depends on how good of a first impression you make. My advice would be to go into the store, immediately find the largest person present, and demand a cigarette. Regardless of whether you get the cigarette or not, you are then going to have to strike them in the face as hard as you can - when they are down on the floor spitting blood and teeth, point at the other people present threateningly, then sit at a table and enjoy a game.

Welcome to Dakka!

Welcome to Dakka, it's funny to read some of the posts of how to deal with the store. I just think as long as you attend with your boyfriend everything will be fine especially once you start winning against the other players and you build up your "cred".

A Heretic may see the truth and seek redemption. He may be forgiven his past and will be absolved in death. A Traitor can never be forgiven. A Traitor will never find peace in this world or the next. There is nothing as wretched or as hated in all the world as a Traitor. - Cardinal Khrysdam, Instructum Absolutio

Really it's just a matter of being yourself. Most Gamers are shy until you get them into the game. I think the only problem you might have is getting hit on if they don't know you have a boyfriend or know him. They're just guys though, a good solid shutdown or telling them no thanks will usually do the trick. I agree with others though that it never hurts to bring friends you might think would like it. My number one tip, is if someone's being offensive or harrassing let them know, and if they don't stop let the store manager know. I've had a couple female gamer friends who didn't let people know they were getting offended or didn't like the way people were acting and in the end it turned into a massive drama piece with everyone arguing and yelling.

Most the girl gamers I know solve the store problem quite simply...they dont go to stores. Problem solved.

Play at home (yours or other peoples) and purchase online. Unfortunately, the regulars at a lot of game stores have the social graces of a drunken buffalo, and quite often share the smells and appearance of one to boot.

You will also find that many or most gaming groups/stores have cliches associated with different gaming systems... Typically, there some creeps, because creeps like fantasizing. Even now my wife goes to the local game store and I dont worry about it at all. A good place to start is to become friends with the owner, not as a favoritism thing, but more so you can become aquainted with who to watch out for, who is legit, etc.

Welcome to the family, and represent well, you are a rare breed, Ma'am!

Lysol, deodorant spray, febreeze.. use them as a warning prior to pepper spray.

And help the poor guys out, bring your girlfriends and make them learn to play.

Welcome to Dakka!

I'm no girl, but I remember my first visit to GW with my then girlfriend. She got me into wargaming, and at that stage I was still pretty clueless other than having decided I liked the Tau models.
The staff basically ignored her in favour of asking me various questions and offering suggestions (buy this!!) The handful of customers in there seemed scared that there was a girl. Not so bad for me, but a bit frustrating for her.
At least it wasn't like how most people think a gaming store would be with a bunch of sweaty nerds gathering around her and drooling etc.

Don't be discouraged, bring a friend along etc, More girls in the hobby is always a good thing.

Welcome. While I cannot provide first hand comments about the girl experience (despite my icon), my wife comes down to paint with us and both of my young boys paint and game in the store and their experiences have been excellent.

You may be a curiosity for a while, but it fades and then you're just part of the crowd.

What scares you?

LOL. You need a combi sprayer: febreeze-pepper spray, twin linked if possible.

Indeed, they often have cliques, too. The creeps, the card players, the smelly ones, the leering teens, etc.
