Subject: Balancing my Collections, which armies should I drop?

Right now I have:
20K of Tyranids
8K of Eldar
5K of Blood Angels
2.5K of CSM
Enough Orks and Tau to ally together for maybe 2K-2.5K
I'm thinking of dropping:
The excess out of my Tyranid collection... I have no need for 12 Venomthropes or 12 Lictors
My Eldar (drop them while they're hot!)
All of my Orks and Tau (again, while they're hot!... maybe I'll keep the Nob Bikerz)
In return, I'd add several (maybe even 8 or 9) drop pods, 30 more marines, a few named characters, and whatever new hotness comes out for Tyranids.
I'd like to have a manageable about of Tyranids (maybe even less than 10k)
And then meld my BA and CSM into a BA/SW/CSM/C:SM army that can run a little of everything.
I'd also like to go for a tiny GK army... like 10 models at 1850. I'd like them to be AD mech... but that's another story.
This means I'll have good guys (well... Night lord BA and Sons of Horus marines), bad guys (traitor legions heresy era) and xenos (Tyranids)
Thoughts? I have a huge collection and between getting married, needing money, needing to cut down on my spending (updating all of these armies is costly), and needing to shrink my foot print I need to start selling stuff.
I don't have time to play as much and, honestly, I need to cut back. Does this sound like a good decision?

I'd say sell 10k of 'Nids, 3k (or 5k or all) of Eldar, and Orks, maybe Tau and CSM too unless you want to merge CSM and BA and just get rid of what you wouldn't need anymore for that army.

You could just give me all of your Nids if you want to balance it out.

Eldar is good to get rid of now. Id hold on to nids until the new codex comes out. Same with orks. Just for if nothing else theyed sell better. Sell tau now while they are still strong.

I was going to say that but I thought it was obvious and it seemed like he needed some money. Besides, I don't think he really needs 20k points of 'Nids.

I'm a firm believer in never selling off Warhammer models. It always seems like a mistake one will regret down the line at some point. I hung onto models for a decade even after I swore I'd never play again but then I started up again after an irresistible lure due to the fluff and BAM my armies were just waiting to be re-fielded with a vengeance.
Don't sell anything, keep the enormous Tyranid force as well!

I am in the dont sell camp as well. Just cut back on your spending if you have to. Especially keep your 20k nidz. It sounds like they are your favorite. And they are your best bet for
Apocalypse Games.

I'd wait and see what comes out for the new Nids dex before selling off anything. Except maybe the things you have more then 3 FOC slots of.
Agree with selling off the Eldar while they're hot, along with the Tau, and Orks.

Well, I have a little dissimilar view. See, it's more or less a trend of GW to boost some bad models and nerfing some good models of their old codexes when launching the new ones. That was quite clear when they nerfed the boosted (actually in a WD article) CD Flamers and Screamers of Tzeentch. So, I'd advise to sell the actual good Nids models, and holding the bad ones until 2-3 weeks after the new codex. Some of them will probably get better - and, of course, more expensive in the market, as more people will want them
Orks will get a new codex mostly in March, so the search for them will certainly increase coming February (or December, if the rumours say January for the codex's launch). You can do the same action you did with the Nids.
Eldar and Tau are still 'hot', as the other guys wrote. CSM... if you don't have Heldrakes or Plague/Noise Marines, they won't do much in the table (my opinion).
BA will take some time to upgrade, so I'd say to hold them for now. Maybe finding a real instered guy to sell with some increment ^^

Thanks for the input, everyone.
I hadn't thought about regretting it later... I just have so much crap and so little time to use it.
And the thing is, when will I ever use all 40-50 eldar jetbikes I own? Or al 20 of my striking scorpions? Maybe in 5 years scorpions will be the new hotness in 7th edition "the age of assaults" but I just don't expect it to happen.
Now, I may hold on to a few key units like maybe my seer counsel, karandras or some phoenix lords, or something. With allies in the game, I can hold on to a very small number of models and still use them. However, I just don't want to keep track of all of the models that never get used.
I know a lot of people own many armies, but even if I cap it off at 3 (one of which is a hodgepodge of space marine allies) I am sure that one will be my favorite and will then see the most use.
Even at that, the armies I have need just a few more models to make everything useable (drop pods for starters) and I think that would be a more effective use of time and effort to maintain.
I have 3 glass cabinets like you see at the GW stores. I doubled the number of glass shelves and I would like all of my collection to be painted (I can fill it with painted models) and 100% of it to fit on the shelves.
How much is too many?

I'd cut the nids and eldar in half (sell 10k and 4k respectively). From there I would consider shaving off 1000 pts of blood angels (I'm sure there are vehicles and some squads you hardly touch).
I would also drop the Tau/Orks as you don't seem very attached to them and you plan on starting a new project (grey knights). Between your main armies and new projects.... I doubt you would have time for the Tau/Ork combo (I know I wouldn't).
Hmm it is also worth asking yourself do you play/or intent to play apocalypse games? If not then there is rarely a need to build an army over 2500 pts.
My ultimate goal for each army I choose is to have a 2 - 2.5k army with around 1k points of spare, interchangeable units. This would mean the most Tau I ever plan on owning (my main army) would be no more then 3.5k - this would give me all the units needed to play my main lists and a few extra units to swap around if I wish to mix things up now and then.

Wait for the new nid codex to drop before you sell them. It is a bit of a gamble, as some units might get better or worse, but there should be more people picking up nids at that time.

Generally you don't need armies that do the same thing. Why have a horde nid army and a horde ork army?
Slim down your forces based on that idea.

I like the idea of death stars... and, ironically, blood angels are the only space marine faction that can't ally in some way with the orks... I'd just keep my 10 lovingly converted nob bikers and lovingly converted biker warboss because they rock that hard.
I bought Eldar and Tau back when they were considered "bad" because I wanted to see how well I could do with them. Unfortunately, they're a bit over the top right now so they're at the top of my list to sell.
I actually am thinking how I could get a sisters of battle army... haha. But, again, I'm cutting back so NO.
I agree with you Juraigamer. I want some imperial styled forces and xenos so that I'll never get bored. In apocalypse style games I could just stay Tyranids or mix my marines into my 'fluff' themed army that revolves around the interactions of the Night Lords and the Sons of Horus. As the Luna Wolves they fought together on a world named Darrowmar. Then, at Istvaan V they fought together. They were also together on Terra and participated in various Black Crusades with the Black Legion.
Hence, I can use all of the marine codexes and meld them into one force allying with eachother. Who knows, it's an idea. But, at the end of the day, it will be 30 marines I need to buy, maybe some thunderfires, my chaos force and my blood angel force.
