hey guys im wanting to pick your brains about resin casting, I have made a base for one of my models and would like to be able to replicate it reliably and was thinking about going down the casting route.
my question is this:
what is the best kind of resin to use? i dont want to lose any detail
where are the best places to get resin from? im in the uk and price is definitly a factor
thanks in advance guys

Thanks for the quick reply the tomps fast cast resin looks like the kind of thing im after, however as im new to casting i was hoping there would be a starter kit with everything i would need to make the mould etc in it. Dont want to go buying a load of stuff that i think might be right, only to find out it is nothing like what i wanted.

I think the silicone rtv is what you want for the moulds -a small blue bottle of catalyst and a larger tin of silicone. Tomps sell both and they should be easy to find on their site.

Bases are rather easy to cast in resin as they only require a one sided mold.
For the ease of mixing i prefer to use silicone and resin that has a mixing ratio of 1:1. I started with the Smooth-On starter kit. It comes with basic resin and silicon as well as release agent and some material (a DVD and stuff) to get you started. I don't know where to get it in the UK but the smooth on website has a list of distributors. There must be some in the UK in the list there.

You still need something to make the frame for the mold out(Lego block work well) and if you also want to make two piece moulds some plastilin or similar stuff to create the first side.
