And from the original article:
ORLANDO, Fla. —

A 9-year-old boy who made his first court appearance on school weapons charges was sentenced to home confinement Friday.

School officials said the boy brought multiple weapons to his elementary school in Hunter's Creek Wednesday.

An officer searched the student's bag and found an unloaded handgun, a magazine with six bullets inside, a steak knife and small-handled sledge hammer.

The guns came from his father's home, officials said.

A judge ordered the boy to home confinement and said his parents need to keep any and all weapons away from him.

The boy's father said he was playing a character he learned from the video game Minecraft.

"They use hammers to dig and knives and guns to protect themselves from zombies," the boy's father said.

Officials at Endeavor Elementary School on Balcombe Road said the 9-year-old boy told three friends before school that he had the weapons. Those three reported the information to a school resource officer, who found the student and isolated him from others in the school.

School officials said all protocols were followed, and authorities were called in to investigate.

The boy was charged with possession of a firearm on school grounds, possession of a concealed weapon and possession of a firearm by a minor.

No injuries were reported.

The boy was so tiny that his detention uniform engulfed him and he could barely see the judge over the podium Friday.

"I thought I was going to have a heart attack. I couldn't believe it," said the boy's father.

The father said his son was just acting out the game.

He believes the gun could never have been fired.

"Well, the gun was stored in a drawer but the firing pin component had been removed," the boy's father said.

So... this is a thing...

Minecraft has been updated to include guns? Cool.

I wish I had time for all the game systems I own, let alone want to own...

So the gun was harmless, that's good at least. I'm curious why they kept referring to "guns" in a plural sense, but only mentioned one.

And yeah, guns in minecraft? I haven't seen that yet, but I haven't played in a while either.

I will say I'm glad nobody was harmed. School should be a safe place of rubbish lessons, playing sports in a thunderstorm, and cheap cider being passed around!

There are some Minecraft mods that include craftable guns, but the vanilla MC has no guns whatsoever; neither does it have hammers.

Now, if the kid brought a stone pickaxe and a diamond sword into school then yeah, MC could have played a small part in it.

No.

How long until we blame the kid's father for clearly not locking up a firearm? Thus the victim is blamed.

The dilemma is there is no point locking up firearms if they are needed for home defence. If someone invades your home you need a gun at hand right away.

Without the firing pin, that hammer in his back pack was a better tool to set that ammunition off then the handgun was. While his father didn't "secure" the weapon in a traditional sense, he made sure it was safe.

Which is why I've never been a fan of the idea of removing firing pins. Unless you're a pure master at handling fire arms, your ability to re-install that pin in a self defense situation will most likely fall in the realms of failure. A locked up handgun would be a better option.

Indeed, but there are ways to put a weapon where it is out of reach of children and still easily accessible.

On top of a wardrobe or other inaccessible place to the vertically challenged. And then there are combination locks.

Disagree. It takes me about 4 seconds to open my safe by my bed.

Taking out the firing pin as a "safety measure" isn't a better choice than properly storing your firearm.

I agree, with cincydooley. If you have your code and memory movements memorized it can take even under 2 seconds to put in a code. It takes me a second for my pin numbers, add few seconds to get to that safe you can get a gun in a few moments.

I have a biometric safe. I put my 4 fingers on there and I'm good to go. Even has hand grooves to line up in the dark.
