hello dakka,

I'm toying with the idea of painting up some assault marine squads as Black Dragons and allying them into my salamanders force using the RG chapter tactics. to do them up right, I want to model the chapter's bony mutations - claws, horns, etc - and I'm looking for ideas on where I can find bits. I'm guessing chaos is where I should be looking and I know there are at least a couple pairs of claws from the warp talons box that would work. what else should I be looking into?

cheers!

You can check the vampire counts, dark elves and dark eldar ranges, some of them have interesting things that can be cut and added to marine armour and painted to resemble bones and such.

Thats got me thinking as I've got to do a Black Dragon for my Deathwatch assault squad. Would any of the Tyranid barbs/claws be any good. I've had a look through and I think that the smaller barbs on the Mawloc would be decent, although I'm not sure about the scale (Having never painted Tyranids). If they are alright, then I'm sure sticking them on the forearms and head would be fine if a bit GS is used to blend it into the armour. I'm confident that you'll be able to find Tyranid bits on eBay or other bits sites, but I took the liberty to search eBay for any such auction. The below link (Not my auction I must stress - It's in the US in any case ) seems to be great if you go down that route:

To be honest, most of the nid talons are pretty damn big, even on marines (usually around chainsword size)

Best bet wound be cocktail sticks for the barbed talons with a GS mount to the wrist / forearm.

I wasn't thinking full talons - I agree, they are way to big. I was thinking of the smaller barbs as shown in the linked auction.

Even the small chest spines from the trygon/mawloc kit are huge on a marine.
Just the ball join on them is pretty much the size of a marines head.

Its not soo much the length of the blade thats an issue, its mainly the width and thickness of it that make it soo large.
Plasticard would also be another idea, but would take longer.

Also, for the elite units they are usually alot bigger than normal marines.
Could allways throw together some true scale marines for them.
The standard gaunt talons would fit those pretty damn well.

I'm going to have to rummage through my bitz box tonight and see what DE stuff I have. I remember getting stabbed a lot when I was chopping that stuff up for storage, so there must be something useful in there :p I agree that much of the nid stuff is going to be too wide. similar issues with the choas mutation bits; they're all way too big and exaggerated for the look I want.
