On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

Hey guys,

Have just got a new project off the ground and thought that I would start to chart its progress here - hopefully of some interest for anyone thinking of doing something similar, and also a place to post some minis.

I've been into FoW for some years. Previously, I've made a 1500pt US Armored Rifle Company, but have always thought about doing a late war German force.

I really like to get completely in to whatever army I'm making, to help me get motivated and to get the 'feel' of it.. be it reading the Heresy books for a 40k pre-Heresy marine army, watching anime for Infinity, and for Flames of War this meant watching some WW2 movies and some reading! Made the mistake of watching 'Come and See' (one of the harshest movies I've ever seen, and actually had a counter-intuitive effect! Needed to watch some Disney cartoons afterwards... ), and picked up a copy of this book - I intend to copy camo and uniform patterns, circa Normandy 1944:

Anyway.. a few weeks ago I spent a couple of hours online in the evening, copy of rules in hand and easyarmy.com on my browser, and got the following stuff
One of the great things about Flames of War is that there are loads of manufacturers doing 15mm WW2 stuff - you don't have to get everything from Battlefront, and a lot of it is great quality.

From top left, going clockwise:
-Armoured Rocket Launcher battery - the one 'indulgence' purchase, cost more than a third of the total army cost! But, the miniatures are awesome..
-Battlefront tractors (for towing AT guns.. cutest miniature in the BF range! )
- Russian T70, used as a 'captured' tank - just to add a little character to the force.
- Plastic Soldier Company Grenadierkompanie box. Absolute bargain, this will do all of the standard infantry in my force for 16 quid.
- Basing mats. Tamiya instant diorama basing (which is very handy, saves a lot of time) and some flocking to recreate the pleasant (although muddy) fields of Normandy.
- Command Decision. Jagdpanzer IV's, some fallschmirjaeger (paratroopers) and HMG guys. All in metal.
- Peter Pig. I love the old-fashioned packaging for this company's stuff. Again, mostly metal - after doing some reading on various blogs apparently Peter Pig's Tiger tank (got to have one big cat!) is one of the best amongst the many on the market, so went for that one. Numerous other Panzerknacker teams, AT guns, mortar teams to add support for the infantry. Fortunately, the infantry from the 3 companies seem to go together well. Finally, some kubelwagons, unthinkable to have a German force without at least one!
- Trumpeter Me 262 1:144. Saw this on offer and thought it might be cool to use a 'downed' one as an objective marker. A couple of Peter Pig Luftwaffe pilots nearby will help create the diorama!

Anyway, to work! Hopefully will have some completed unit shots to show over the next week.

Any comments very welcome, and thanks for reading!

Yes it would and, being an idiot, that's where I thought I had put it! Will PM a mod..

It's a late war Grendadierkompanie list from Fortress Europe. Mostly infantry, some turret-less tank destoyers (JagdPanzer IV) - I'm basing them on a Grenadier Kompanie 1222 that fought in Normandy and later the Ardennes. The indulgences (not particularly historically accurate bits) are a Tiger and some Fallschirmjäger, just because I wanted at least one big cat, and to paint some camo-pattern!

Thanks mate!

Something I should have posted before, have started putting together some of the PSC grenadier infantry, this one is a test piece.

Sorry not a very good photo, I'm just trying to get to grips with a new camera.

I've been using the Tamiya diorama textured basing material, which saves a great deal of time! Think one of the negatives of painting a lot of infantry in Flames of War is the basing time, and this helps with that a lot!

Have just finished my first Jagzpanzer as well, hopefully some more pics soon!

Oooh. They look lovely!

The bases look fabulous. Is it just sand and flock?

Thanks for the comment Far Seer!

The basing is done using 'Tamiya textured diorama paint' (http://www.tamiyausa.com/items/paints-finishes-60/tamiya-maintenance-material-62000/diorama-texture-paint-100ml-87111)

One of the biggest time sinks when painting infantry for Flames of War is the time spent basing - I paint the infantry on cocktail sticks, then apply some of this stuff to the base with a lollipop stick and then glue the infantry on. Like so:

Then just a single coat of GW Steel Legion, a bit of wash and drybrush and now just needs the flock adding:

Have finished painting the first tank destroyer, this is a Jagdpanzer IV from Command Decision. Metal miniature, so not the easiest thing to put together, but the finished article is really solid and weighty - looking forward to sliding it around on the tabletop!

I've painted using Vallejo 'Middlestone', which was recommended to me. At the moment I'm thinking of adding some more dirt/mud to the tracks, which I think look a bit too pristine considering the worn look of the rest of the tank. Has anyone any experience of using the Tamiya weathering sets or mud-sticks?

Any C&C would be very appreciated! I'm still finding my way with this stuff to an extent, so will take any comments on board.

Thanks! It's hopefully historically accurate, I know there is some argument about exact shade of dunklegelb (the yellow), but I think it was fairly varied in real life.

Actually, at this point I'd like to recommend this rather excellent book from Battlefront, it's a complete collection of their late war range.

Is extremely useful - I'm not always 100% on the tank names and designations, so find this quite useful to use when I'm making an army list on Easyarmy.com, and of course very useful for paint schemes! Believe it's about £5 for sale, so well worth the money

Next, just turning my attention to one of these little guys!

These guys are traktors for the anti-tank guys I have in the force. Are they necessary? Not really, but they're only 5pts and I couldn't resist getting what is surely the cutest vehicle in the Wehrmacht!

Just got some of the Tamiya mud stick and weathering powders (which are basically like a little make-up kit.. ), effects look rather nice so will post some more pics soon.

At last, I have finished the first of two Grenadier platoons.

These are a mix of Plastic Soldier Company infantry, and the Panzerschreck in the top left are Peter Pig - as you can see they are slightly beefier (these guys had to work out more to carry that heavy equipment! ), but it's not really noticeable on the tabletop.

Finally, a painted 'Loltraktor'. I used the Tamiya weathering sticks and mud pen with this one, very straightforward to use and would definitely recommend them even for this small scale.

Any C&C very welcome.

Another (hopefully final) new purchase - this rather cool if a little pricey dice/token box, with the Pegasus Icon being one of those used by a regiment that fought in Normandy. Interestingly, the special icon is the '6' on this dice, which makes it different to my older American Armored Rifle dice set where the icon was on the '1'. You also get a number of themed tokens to use (to represent 'dug in', 'bailed out', and lots of the other events that can occur).

Also, another delivery of some Peter Pig bits and pieces! Inc. artillery crew (for the AT guns), command staff and 'surrendering Germans' for an objective piece I'm making.

Working on an HMG platoon at the moment, will hopefully have some more to show soon. Any comments very welcome!

Thanks very much for the comments guys.

A quick update, I've finished the JagdPanzerIV unit. These are miniatures from Command Decision

I've used the Tamiya weathering powders and 'stick mud' (a kind of pen thing for adding mud) to the tracks

I've tried to add some distinguishing features, with some small left-over Battlefront tank bits (bits of track, jerry cans etc.)

Any C&C very welcome, have some other infantry I'm working on so hopefully will post them soon!

Next miniature I'm working on, a looted T70. The miniature is Battlefront, I've added some extra little bits and pieces to make it look like a vehicle that's been pressed into service by a veteran tank crew

I've been busy with these, another update!

Some HMG teams. These are miniatures from Command Decision. Have to say they are a little bit bulkier than the PSC guys (I think an unavoidable consequence of being metal when compared to plastic), but I think overall it's not too noticeable. And, as you can see even through the crummy photo have some really nice detail and poses.

These guys can be split into smaller units and used to support the Grenadiers.

And, another photo of the JagdPanzer.

Next up, am working on some AT guns. Something a little bit different with these, I'm using some camo on the vehicle crew and perhaps even a bit more of a scenic base (as though the weapon has been set up to hide and hit the approaching armour at close range).

Any C&C very welcome! At this point I'm starting to feel like I'm in a room by myself, talking to the wall

Looking good Pacific! Having followed your exploits in Infinity, I've got to ask- any plans for scenery for these dudes?

The mud pen does a good job on the tracks.

Thankyou mate! Yes I do have plans for terrain - as I already have an American Armored Rifles force, will probably make a terrain set-up to resemble France. Lots of farm houses, fields, forests, things like that (although nothing as ambitious the Infinity table I did previously - will probably just use a 'mat'o'war' as the base so the setup can be changed. )

Just putting the finishing touches to some AT guns and more infantry, hopefully more to post soon.

The tiny little soldiers are cute! And those Jagdpanzers are pretty sweet too. This is 15mm yeah? Not really familiar with historical games but there is a guy in town who plays them (I can count the people who do modeling on one hand lol, its sad) so it couldn't hurt to know more about them

I definitely like the weathering on everything and the contrast your tiny soldiers have with their bases. Neat stuff, I'll have to keep checking in

Wait these aint BLUE ULTRAMARINES

They look really good mate. Looking forward to seeing your progress. Thats a hell of a lot of mini's to get through.

Speaking of terrain RAFM bunkers sandbags and the like wouldn't be any use to you would they? No idea if they are the right scale.

Thanks very much for the comments guys!

@GrimDork - Yes mate they are 15mm, very small but not 6mm snap at the knees small!

@Azazelx - Good idea, army shot coming up!

@Carlos13th - What is RAFM? These guys are 15mm (1/100) scale, definitely thinking about getting some terrain although don't want to go OTT at this point.

A small update, some PAK37 anti-tank guns.

These guys are painted in slightly different camo, wearing zeltbahn (poncho). Figured that these guys would want to conceal themselves as well as possible, especially as at this point in the later war these 37mm guns weren't very effective. One of the guns has a 'Steilengranite' rocket, which was a one-shot weapon used for very close range. Both guns and crew are Peter Pig miniatures

These guns aren't very manoeuvrable, so they have a pair of little traktors to pull them along. These are Battlefront miniatures

Finally, a close-up of an MG team that is part of the Grenadiers.

Any C&C very welcome, hopefully have some photos of some tanks I have just completed on here soon!
