So this is my 3rd painting, and I've gone and bought myself a box of space marines to paint into ultramarines.

Can I grab some C&C, I put this one together today with what basic paints I have. I am aware I am a complete novice, but some basic tips would be wonderful. I stuffed up the wings on the chest and also the gun looks horrible.

Some new pics.

Try painting the top of the bolter in the same red as the rest of the case, and it will be fine (that being said, it doesn't even look bad as is).
As far as the chest wings go, just take your time with the highlights from now on, and you should be right.
Other than that, remember to pick out some more details, like the soft joint armour and the pipes in the backpack.

Honestly, mate, as far as third miniatures go, you've done a bloody good job.

hmm, the picture is a little over exposed too- seems a bit bright. In real life it's a bit more matte and flows nicer. Yeah, I need to work on the backpack- it was the last piece i threw up and got a little anxious to get it over with :p

looks like the battle damage could be spread about more. Like this;

Spoiler:

But in all seriousness, If you keep up this standard throughout, your squads will look great.

Also, blend the paint on his hand some more. highlight is a bit stark, or color the entire hand highlighted, and then highlight the edge.

I have trouble believing this is your third miniature. This is just too good Are you an artist or something? Your painting is very clean and the line highlights are quite consistent, although a little thick for my taste.

As for some suggestions, yes the battle damage could be in more areas than just concentrated on his knees. You could also add some highlights and lowlights to the aquila on his chest, the gun casing, and the shoulder pad trimming.

And another thing, I can't tell from this angle but have you drilled a hole into the boltgun's barrel? If so, good on you, if not get that done with a pin vise.

But yeah, that is seriously amazing for your third time.

Looking good !

The only poorly painted miniature is the one that is not painted.

Your third miniature ever has shading, highlighting, weathering, and a bright, clean, crisp paintjob. My third miniature, let alone my third army, weren't even close to that! You're doing an excellent job, and I look forward to seeing more from you. Paint the top of the bolter red as well (and the rail in gunmetal) then paint the base rim with a dark brown and you'll be ready for primetime.

Clearly you are a cut above the average beginner painter - you've highlighted and layered properly, good battle-damage and painted the lenses well.

One thing that bugs me about this model though is the actual battle damage though. It's painted in the scheme of 2nd edition Ultramarines right? The battle damage looks 4 editions out of place to me. But I dunno, maybe you've started a new thing. Maybe it just needs a bit of tweaking.

I'm so new to Warhammer in general, I'm not quite sure what edition means and how the battle damage may be out of era. Heh. But I accept that. I am going to rework the piece tomorrow and upload another picture- a picture that's a little more clearer as I feel this one is over exposed and showing it in a brighter color than it should be.

I appreciate the feedback guys. I've been watching just so many videos online, I've been practicing wet blending on other models and I'm really enjoying it. I know an army is going to take me forever, but I'm prepared to chip away at it.

I'll touch up with the following comments and we'll see how it compares tomorrow.

I was considering painting the gun black- do you think that might suit it better and should I remove the battle damage entirely?

I want to keep them clean and generic, it's just the kind of OCD person I am. Heh.

If this is your third miniature you have a very bright future ahead of you in this hobby!

Everything looks really good to me except perhaps the battle damage as others have mentioned. The problem is it looks too controlled / painted on.

You could try sponging on some silver for a more natural look, like so...

http://tutofig.com/2011/12/sponge-weathering/

Or do away with it altogether if you prefer a factory fresh look

I think I'm going to revert it back to factory-fresh, first deployment.

So I think so far I'm going to touch up a few things.

I'll bring the gun to a brighter red with a slightly britgher highlight to match an already quite bright minature. Color the top of the gun red, might also change the sights to silver. I'll also change the gun crest (skull with wings) to yellow rather than that lighter bleached bone look.

Chest crest. I'm a bit annoyed it came out looking like it did. It looks thick and gluggy and the ressesses are too dark.

Also to work on the jet pack.

Colorscheme is fine though?
