what's your opinion, Stombolter or deathwind for a drop pod?

I deathwind with my spacewolves list, I usually put them close to enemy gun lines anyway so 12 inches isnt too hard to manage to hit with, and its always a good fear tactic that keeps my troops alive from devistator/vehicle fire that would rather kill the light armor and deathwind than the wolves that just landed for some reason.

I'm tossing up which way to go. I want to use them with my sternguard and have them fire before the stern to soften up the targets so I can them lay in with the bolters. If that makes sense.

I always think its worth it, its a small blast with moderate damage that you can potentially put anywhere on the map IMO
I would rather the blast to 2 shots.

Isnt it a Large Blast?

Additional question, is the Deathwind Launcher a One Shot or not? Not a marine player, just want to check.

You right, it is a large. I remember using it to wipe out an entire squad of termies my first game!

I am not sure on the second bit. The profile and set up to me makes it sound like it is one shot per shooting phase that the vehicle can shoot.

so unless the Drop pod gets blown up, weapon destroyed or anything else locally (my three other friends I have had the chance to play with so far) have homebrewed it to firing normally like any other vehicle.

If you take out a squad of termies with a single S6 AP5 (can't remember the stats by heart) large blast, there has been some of the worst armor save rolling ever.

Can you even fire the Deathwind on the turn it arrives? I thought DSing vehicles counted as goingat Cruising speed limiting non-fast vehicles to snap shots, which you can't do with blasts. Or did I dream that?

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

You cant fire it the turn it arrives. You have to snapshot the stormbolter the turn it arrives too. Deathwind are kinda useless for their points. I prefer the stormbolter.

Reason I can't be bothered with using the Deathwind is because you can't fire it on the turn the drop pod arrives. The drop pod will most likely be dead by the time it can fire. Not to mention I'm a bit paranoid about the large blast template scattering onto the drop pod and its passengers, although that is highly unlikely.

Stormbolters. Always.

You can't fire the blasts on the turn you arrive. Deathwinds are short range, on an immobile platform, that can scatter on friendly troops (who will be right there, as they just deployed)

Even if they were a free swap, I don't think I'd take them. But you pay points for the "upgrade"

Weird, I find that my Drop Pods _never_ get destroyed. Waste of bullets normally I guess. With a Deathwind Launcher that might change a little bit, but at least the Storm Bolter versions survive just fine.

Really? Most people tend to ignore my pods and focus on my troops until near the end of the game -- and even then they don't care if KP are not involved.

exactly. and then next turn when you can shoot, all enemy uinits would have moved away from the d pod.
its like giving the crimson hunter nightvision, just another useless upgrade

a tip, if someone drops a pod in your backlines with the deathwind launcher, you can avoid its blasts by hugging it with your units.

Almost always a waste of points.

I generally go with the SB, as you're probably better off putting the points for the ML into the squad itself, getting a heavy/special weapon or even some CC stuff.

I will also add that the SB is not to be underestimated, I generally have them make a nuisance of themselves most games, which often really annoys my opponents.

If you do spam them 7 to 9 large st 5 blasts is not to be sniffed at. If it does hit your troops, you usually have better saves. And if the enemy purposefully tries to avoid 7 to 9 12" bubbles, you have put them at a disadvantage. To top this off it makes the drop pod into a unit that has to be countered if not avoided.
A 12" whirlwind blast for 15pts isn't too shabby. I just can never seem to find the points despite this.

I like to have a few deathwinds in my force, simply for keep things off objectives. Since I normally drop in my ironclads, an av 13 vehicle tends to take more firepower than a pod, so it always gets a few shots off.
