I am building a Sisters army for 40k. Due to the limited variety of models, and my plan to do MSU in 7-9 Immolators, the majority of the squads in the army are all going to look very, very similar. Given that each squads special power is once per game, and each transport is identical, the need arises (for both my sake and for my opponent) to be able to tell which squad is where, and in what vehicle.

Looking at a basic Sisters model, you can see that there really isn't any place to put squad markings. So I'm asking for ideas from the community.

The best idea I'm come up with so far is to put some sort of unique totem on the bases, such as a skull, and then repeat that on the squad's vehicle. I've also considered painting a unit color on the lip of the bases and then repeat the color on the vehicle, but I think that would look bad.

That's really easy... Hair!

For each squad, change the hair color to a squad color. Then on the girl who is manning the immo/rhino turret paint their hair the same color.

For those with helmets, I paint the back of the helmet the same color. On all models, I also paint the wings on the left shoulder pad the same color.

You can see basically what I'm talking about here:
Spoiler:

Left is a Brunette BSS, Middle is Blue Haired Dominions, Right is Blonde BSS. At this point, I had not updated the drivers on the vehicles to match.

That is a good idea, thanks.

How about painting the edge of their shoulder cloth bits, a bit like the raised part of a marine's shoulder pad?

Check out my gallery here
Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!

I believe the official art has the squad markings on their right sleeve.

Those are both good suggestions. However, along with the different hair color in each squad, I'm not sure it'll be noticeable enough during game play. It's visibility during painting or while sitting on the shelf is one thing; but when its on the table is quite another.

I'm probably going to got with the totem idea. I'm actually thinking of putting them on the backpack, sort of like the SM sergeants banners, but smaller.

The issue, of course is getting enough for each squad, and finding enough different things to use that are different.

Totally up to you, but the hair color works well on the table. You can see the difference in the pic I posted which is tabletop distance.

Yeah, definitely adding a vote for hair color. My opponents and I have no problems discerning which squads are which.

Another alternative would be robe color if you are looking for more surface area, but that may lose some of the overall army cohesion.

I might try it.

Pretre, how'd you do the banner for that yellow squad? It looks very nice.

Printed the second from the right

after I added a fleur to it.

I then painted it bone with black and red. There's pics in my gallery with closer up shots.

Edit: Here's a close up of another banner using the same idea.

Very cool, thank you.

BTW, I decided to go with the bolter/weapon casing being different colors to separate squads.
