My local GW is having their monthly painting contest and this months theme is Heavy Support, since I have just moved into the area and am eager to get involved I have weighed in on getting a devastator marine painting up for the competition just to get involved. I'm not sure of how well the rest of the people entering can paint but this is mostly just to get involved in the local scene and not necessarily to try and win though that would always be nice. I've used a larger base than usual since its just an entry and not being used in gaming but here is my marine, from my Blood Golems Chapter, carrying a relic heavy bolter.

That's damn dynamic. Great work! I've only recently learned how hard snow bases are to do. Good stuff.

Very nice work! I'll agree with the dynamic pose, not just a SM holding a weapon as if in formation and doing a weapons inspection.

Cheers, I'm looking forward to seeing what other people bring, especially aince it should be an indication of what kind of armies I'll face when gaming.

Yup the gun muzzle is from an old chaos tank accessory sprue I got years back, its pretty much the only part of that kit I still own

The legs are vanguard, torso tactical, heavy bolter + backpack are sternguard, head and bayonet are FW

The head and bayonet are, everything else is GW.

UPDATE:

As a quick update I came first in the competition and have the chance to pick out the theme for the next months one, which I opted to put forth as FAST ATTACK, I have a corsairish Eldar Viper planned when the new Dark Elf chariot kit arrives so I'm really looking forward to converting and painting something eldarish again.

The other entries were really nice with some fantastically painted Ork vehicles (dread and kan) and a cool Ultramarines landraider, also got to meet some of the guys who game in store so the competition worked out really well.

Congratulations on a well-deserved win! Model looks great, overall - dynamic, clean build with a neat paintjob to match (like the warm, tarnished silver effect on the metals, especially). To offer at least a bit of (hopefully constructive ) criticism, two points stick out.

First, that transfer has poor contact. It's not the usual minor silvering - the left-hand (viewed from behind) corners and the central strip that bridges the groove in the backpack aren't even close to making contact. If it isn't already heavily varnished, I might go back in and try to push those down tight, either by trimming and slitting them, respectively, or loading them down with a decal solvent.

Second is the snow. I can certainly see wanting (needing, more likely, considering the slant of their general policies) to use all GW products for a GW competition in a GW store, but that's not snow - that's white static grass. You've done a great job with the application, but the material itself just kills the realism. Seems a shame to have your skill and effort rendered impotent, due to a choice in material.

Again, congrats and thanks for sharing!

Epic work, that really captures the idea of the Marines at war. No one stands still, and even the big guns are in constant motion. Again, truly awesome model (and you may well be the first ever person to base a devastator off of a Vanguard Vet, it's not a combination that immediately springs to mind )

consider the muzzle idea stolen for my manders, although I had thought of using it on a marines las cannon, I never would have tried on a heavy bolter.

Constructive critisism is always welcome, its one of the best ways to improve.

As to the basing I agree that my snow was not quite how I had intended it to come out which was something of a disappointment, it is however something I intend to keep at to try and improve. I usually stick to mostly GW basing supplies just because entering in the GW store it seems only polite to do so.

The decal was something of an issue on the backpack, I may go back and revisit it with softner to try and cure the issues there.

Cheers, I found out about the competition at the last minute so had to rely on my bits box to make up a Devastator marine without actually having anything from the kit to hand, I do enjoy a more movement based marine model though and the vanguard kit was sufficiently runny (as opposed to other jump troops who are posed more vertically movement wise)

Glad I could help, it was fortunately just the right size, I had concerns it'd be too large for the HB body.

Sadly not in the forseeable, he emerged from my bits box and is currently on display at GW Harrogate whilst I move onto my grots and Eldar Raiders. May do one for each squad type when needed.

I thought I had commented on this, great looking model!

"You are like a son and together we have all but conquered the galaxy. Now the time has come for me to retire to Terra. My work as a soldier is done and now passes to you for I have great tasks to perform in my earthly sanctum. I name you Warmaster and from this day forth all of my armies and generals shall take orders from you as if the words came from mine own mouth. But words of caution I have for you for your brother Primarchs are strong of will, of thought and of action.
