You can put Multi-Meltas on Space Marine tactical squads and on devastator squads. Let's not consider all the other places you can put them on, as I think there the tactics seem pretty straightforward (MM ven. dread + drop pod assault = 1st turn tank busted; dual MM speeder = 2nd turn tank bust; 2 grav gun + 1 MM attack bike = dedicated MC hunters + AT unit, Stormraven w. tl-LC + tl-MM = anti flyer unit and tank hunter too etc.)

My question is MMs on tactical marines. How best to use them? The "put them in a rhino and cruise around" wont work as you can only snapfire heavy weapons from fire points if your transport moved. I think 4 MM Devs dropped would work, but they'd have to survive 1 turn of shooting as they can only snapfire their MMs upon arrival.

MMs are useful if you are facing an assault-oriented mechanized list rushing at you, as MMs are only half the points cost of a Lascannon and also +1AP, but mech lists were 5th edition material.

For Tac Squads, I'd pair it with a plasma gun and a Rhino.

Multi-Metlas on TACs seem good at first (12" melta range) but it forces them to move up very close to the enemy line to be effective, where they then become a suicide unit, not to mention that moving means 6s to hit. Same with devestators, maybe be cheap and take 2 MM in a 5 man dev squad in a rhino to pop a tank, and pop the UM Dev doctrine to make them relentless T1/2. I'd rather have want to see them be an option on Centurions, where they could either pop TEQs/MCs and/or vehicles (given GC is 24", same as MM).

If you're using the UM CT you can give your devastators 2x Multi meltas and 2 other weapons and combat squad them.

Then drive the Multi Melta combat squad around ready to nuke something on the turn(s) you use the Devastator Doctrine.
