Contemplating taking Necrons as allies and unsure of how to equip my Destroyer Lord's Wraith bodyguard. Whip Coils sound awesome, but how many Wraiths should be so equiped, and why?

Also, are either if their other wargear options worthwhile?

I started with 6 whip coils.... then 3, now I run them barebones. I'd say play test it a bit. They are great for those times when you have to assault into cover... I ended up cutting the coils to fit in more wraiths.

I always read that you run half the unit with coils and keep them in the back until you assault. On the turn you plan to assault, move them to the front so the coils can be used.

I have got no clue on the other wargear.

I'd suggest you have 2-3 whipcoils. There is some debate as to whether it is a useful spend of points.

6 is definitely too many, because some will die before they get to combat.

2-3 is 20 to 30 points. In the Cron codex, there isn't much you can get for 20 points which gives a comparable advantage, namely you get to strike first. Some will argue that this isn't worth it, however, imho, 20 points to give you first strike is really cheap.

0. Saves 20 points. This might be more significant for you, depending on what the primary army is.

Personally, I always go with 2-3. Then again, I only run 1 unit of wraiths, so I value the strike first more!

What army are you using for primary? Orks?

Yes, Orks are my primary detachment. I have tried to capitolize on the Destroyer Lord giving his unit Preferred Enemy with 10 Scarab swarms and 5-20 Warriors. I felt the Swarms died too easily, and that the benefit of the Lord to the Warriors was not worth his points, especially limiting his Close Combat abilities in a shooting unit. I figure I can use the Lord/Wraith unit like my Nob Bikerz. Also, I am really interested in taking a 5 Warrior scoring unit in a Night Scythe or two on the cheap.
