Could we have a bigger pm bar. I often only notice after a while that I have a pm.
Could this be possible?
Thanks
Dakkajet.

That may be useful, I think. I have the same, too. It'd definetly fit.

Do you mean a bigger notification that you have a PM?

I totally don't get what you mean. Screenshot with circle or mock-up like Lego asked for?

I see my PM notifications as soon as I login.

Unless I'm at home, it might take me a while. The Print Friendly of dakka has a grey-ish/white background, and the private messages link is way off to the right. When I have a new notification, it turns white and blends in really well.

But if you're using any of the normal dakka themes, you should have no problem seeing the new PMs

Do people have their Dakka set to the Forum index or the homepage?

Because on the homepage there is no pm notification icon. You only get that once you enter the forum page.
That could be what OP is getting at.

I don't get why we need a bigger one, unless we're browsing on printer friendly, then it's a brightly colored link that jumps off the screen.

Perhaps not necessarily bigger, but something flashing or animated might help instead?

I certainly get responses along the line of "sorry for not replying sooner, I didn't notice I had a PM" quite frequently, especially as I seldom PM people.

But the forum e-mails you that you have PMs as well.

I'm not trying to obstruct here, but it seems pretty obvious to me.

Maybe a pop-up window to notify you? The kids love those.

I have never received an email from Dakka, and can't remember turning them off, assuming that's an option, although wouldn't want to make any bets that I hadn't.

I certainly wouldn't want to receive emails every time I got a PM, but then I don't have an issue with checking the top when I open the page to see if they're there.

Just trying to think what would work best for those who aren't seeing it/aren't aware of it. It took almost 3 weeks to get a response to a request for details on a basing question I had from user, when he did reply, he simply hadn't known he'd even got the PM facility on Dakka!

The email doesn't work if you don't check your emails. The pop up window might also work.

Well, I don't think Lego can cure oblivious.

Well, Lego can't FORCE you to read your PMs. E-mails don't work if you don't read them. The Pop-up window won't work if you have a pop-up blocker. The electro-shock stimulator won't work if you've inured yourself to pain. There's only so much we can do to get people to read PMs.

edit: In fact, there's a corollary to the above. PM's don't work if you don't check them.

Instead of a pop-up window, it could be an in window pop-up notification like the Privateer Press boards have.

It's a little dialog box like this(they also do it if you leave a page in the middle of typing or editing a post, which is easier to do than waiting for a PM):

Obviously, instead of asking if you wanna leave the page, it tells you you have unread PMs. Small and unobtrusive, but effective notification. It's also something you can turn off in your profile if you don't like it.

There is a bar right there at the top of every page. It changes and is pretty bright, even lets you know how many messages you have.

No. I mean a more visibal bar that you can see straight a way when you login.

I mean it's right there, almost at the very top of every page....

So we would have to change every style sheet and the layout of the entire forum because that bright bar is not big enough for you? Okay, maybe Lego can do something there...

Well, screw it.

"I don't read my email or look at the top of every single DakkaDakka page to see if I have a PM, but people should change this site to make it easier for me to know that I have a PM..."

I'm in favor of leaving everything the way it is, you can't force people to use the tools that are already available but you shouldn't make more work for yourself just because they don't.
