Hello Dakka!

This is just a simple question: when people are writing tactics responses--such as in the recent "How to fight a Warhound Titan in a regular game" thread--I often see people recommend taking multiple units of something like Fire Prisms. This would be the same in games of Apocalypse, in regards to formations that call on you to have multiple Carnifexes, all kitted out the same way, etc.

So, my question is: do some (or many) of you out there actually HAVE multiple models (3 or more) of these types of units, for spamming purposes, or in the context of casual gaming, do you just "counts as" other models in?

I'm just questioning the viability (both financially and in terms of modelling and painting time) of purchasing and owning multiples of large models like Land Raiders, Predator Annihilators, Stormravens, Carnifexes, Trygons, Deffdreads, Wraithknights, or whatever fits the army you play.

Thanks!

It largely depends on your gaming group tbh. The guys I mostly play with are happy to proxy, so there's not a huge need to own multiples of things. If it's something that's actually really fun to use then we probably do end up buying multiples eventually, but for just a 'shenanigans' list we certainly just sub things in.

If your group was really anti-proxy, obviously you'd either need to own multiples or go without.

I don't spam anything in a tourney I don't actually have the models for. I can, with what I have, actually run 'spammy' lists with Drop Pods, Space Marine Scouts, Tactical Squads, Dreadnoughts, and Fire Warriors. I've got two Land Raiders but that doesn't seem 'spammy' to me. I'm in the process of collecting enough models for Inquisitor retinues filled with Psykers, Jokaero, and Warrior Acolytes.

Speaking for myself as a marine player, I think its safe to assume everyone has dreams of having their own Battle Company size army barring Real Life restrictions (money mostly).

In my own crusade, im short 20 tacticals, 5 jump pack marines, 10 bikes and 3 drop pods to have a full crusade with options to field any list I like. Rhinos with magnet shenanigans help a lot with making your army cheaper. My motor pool is my pride though with a decent airwing of 1 stormeagle, 2 stormravens, 2 storm talons with 5 LRs (Achilles and 4 others), 3 vindicators and 5 rhinos.

I do like the idea of being able to spam units if needed. But my collection is large enough, and spam lists bore me after a few games, that I control myself from going all out. Havent played apocalypse before, but if it becomes a regular thing in my flgs, i would probably end up completing my shopping list and have a full mech cavalry and airwing, to go along with my blacktide(PA spam) and blackwing (Tda spam) infantry.

I've been building a full battle company for the last two years now, and I am about thirty percent off what I need so I am totally with you. I try to only use what models I have in my lists, but as a guard player as well, I've got seven chimera's so I can do this properly. But they have definitely stood in as varients many times. So have my rhinos...

Ive been playing since around 1999, I have 3 land raiders, about 150 space marines, 7 drop pods, 2 storm talons, 5 rhino chasis with the ability to have 3 predators and 2 whirlwinds as well as 5 rhazorbacks. I have 2 manticores, 2 basilisks, 6 chimera, and 3 leman russ battletanks. I have a lot of other single or double models that I didn't mention. The thing is, 40k is an investment, you will always get at least a large portion of your money back, if not all of it if you buy smart and wait for the model prices to rise like they just did. Everything but old codices and used paint keep there value, even discontinued models can keep their value (sometimes these models will actually double their value to some collectors). So yes, some of us actually have speant more money on warhammer than anything else, especially considering I don't have a job.

I'm one of those older players. My eldar have expanded to 4 shelves over the years, My sisters can field 7 Immolators, and 6 exorcists (the old school one, not the organs) and my tau can put out 51 crisis suits.

The hard part... getting the damnned eldar painted.

My orks don't need no stinking proxies.

If I'm running multiples they are the right models.

My DE likewise.

My daemons GUO is actually the FW nurgle DP Mammon, because i like the model better, and my beasts are Reaper Great Worm conversions, but other than that its a all correct models.

I use proxies for trying experimental lists, but always buy the models when I want to run a list.

Under 5th edition rules, I ran a list of 33 spawn. Had about 12 of the models, had about 8 greater daemons I used as proxies, used bases to represent the rest. In the event someone killed a spawn, I would replace a base with a spawn model when it freed up.

This was a lot better than buying a 21 new spawn models at the time. It let me work out some ideas without needing to heavily invest in something that was not going to work as well under 6th edition rules.

Mine isn't to bad. For tourney there is no stand ins obviously. I personally have 80 marines, 7 rhinos (6 convert into razorbacks and one into a stalker. 5 leman russes. Otherwise I don't have a lot of spammy crap. Most people that play a lot of apoc have a ton of stuff. My friend has 4 armies that equal about 20000 total.

I have been playing the Eldar since the early 90's so I usually have the models I need. If not, then it is usually just the multiples I need or replacement models. For example I have 4 of the old wraithlord models (pewter), but they are about half the size of the new ones, so if I were to run a wraithlord driven list, I'd be buying new ones.

I think when I started the game, the general consensus between players was you collected the army you chose, by that I mean you do not just buy the 2500 points you are most likely to run and be done with it. Instead you just keep collecting models.

I've never done apoc, but when we are dong larger double force org games i dont have terribly many things for the same army so will be running space wolves with dreads and land raiders from dark angels and chaos also, everyone is cool and understands that its unreasonable to have more than a couple for each army--on the other hand i know people that do for some reason. more power to them but I'd stick with only if youre going to be playing apoc alot and getting your money out of them.

I'm actually quite surprised that not many people opt to use magnets in their armies. My growing DE & Eldar army is all out magnetized except a few units which are modeled with the best gear. Magnets do really help if you want to try out or when you want to make up for lack of AP2 or STR8 shots in a list.

I've never really been able to manage it. I'm more owning 1, or 2 of each if at all.

Most of the spammy type things I own are near enough accidental. For example, over the years I've amassed 4 basic predators and 2 baal predators, one of which can turn into a normal predator (and maybe the other, if I get round to assembling it).

I do tend to end up with a stupid amount of transport vehicles though. I genuinely don't know how many rhinos/razorbacks I own.

The great thing about Imperial Guard Chimeras is that you can make them into practically anything!

I have 2 modeled strictly as Chimeras, and 1 more than can be a chimera or a Manticore.

I also have 3 Leman Russ tanks, and course TONS of Guardsmen! You cant be an effective IG player without lots and lots of meatshie- I mean soldiers. You know what they say in the IG, lead from the back!

I loan things out and borrow when need be. Locclo has my only Dakkajet and 2 years ago he loaned me enough extra Lootas so i could bring 45 to Ard Boyz.

Otherwise even during league games, we all proxy from time-to-time. It encourages more variety of lists. More experimentation.

I can spam Leman Russ tanks albeit with some proxying. I also can spam Tac Marines like no tomorrow. In fact, I'm almost to a full battle company. It's a shame Tac Marine spam isn't good in this edition.

Sure you are in the right hobby

My suggestion was Ravagers - I have 4 thats what I used in my last game of Apoc

I am building up my Sisters - so currently I have 4 Immolators and 3 Exorcists - plus one of each to build and buidding on a few more on ebay plus an entire army, plus Repressor and Rhinos (5).

Most of my armies are similar

I try not to use proxies, but I don't mind others doing it. I allowed a bicycle pedal to count as a wavserpent this year. This is an expensive hobby and I still feel guilty for paying so much for this stuff.... but i NEED it.

@Ryan_A: I'm going to tell my wife that my new 4th and 5th Battlewagons are an "investment." Women just don't get us... obviously. lol. I mean crack cocaine can be an investment right?

Nice! Thanks to you all for your responses. I totally agree that proxy-ing something in in order to play test it or try out a different list before actually going out and purchasing stuff makes sense. However, I am really pleased to hear that people actually ARE getting into the spirit of the hobby and modelling and painting up actual models, which to me is at least half the fun. I guess I have just played with some cheap people who don't want to spend any money on this hobby. As I've only been playing for about 5 years, I guess I have plenty of time to continue to build up my collection (expand to more shelves...) and end up with (as @djz05 said we probably all want) my whole 2nd Company Blood Angels force.

So, I am inspired; thanks for the examples, and I do really need to look into magnets too!
