This model was fantastic before the new codex but was rarely fielded. Now that it has been gaining more popularity how have people been dealing with them?

Tough 7 is brutal, if your opponent is truly taking advantage of them you are either giving them a good cover save or don't have LOS at all.

How are people approaching them?

I've had success simply ignoring them, although their firepower is certainly not negligible.

Snipers/poison works.
And if all else fails-throw heavy guns at it. anything with AP 1-2 and high S would work as long you can ignore cover somehow, or shoot alot.

Other option is to drown it with so many high S shots it is bound to fail some saves by sheer volume, or assault and be done with it.

can neither confirm nor deny I lost track of what I've got right now.

What army do you play? DE can just point some guns at them and Tau can infiltrate a large squad of snipers to take them out in one turn.

Those are the only two armies I've actually seen in action that took out a TFC in a single turn on turn 1-2, but I'm sure other armies have ways to do it.

Sniping the techmarine is also a pretty handy technique, precision shots or careful positioning. Alternatively assaulting them is generally pretty decisive.

I believe you mean "can't". It's expressly forbidden in the Artillery section as well as the Standard Techmarine that comes with a TFC isn't a character either.

Not to question your tactics but how did he get into 12 inch range to psychic shriek turn 1? You have a 60 inch range. Make the most of it

I play IG, and there is a lack of over all ability to take out the TFC with snipers. Why is the TFC hard to deal with:

1. If you hit, you either hit the cannon or techmarine. So, you might not actually hit the cannon.

2. The techmarine basicly will amp up any ruins the TFC is put into, so, you might hit, but, have to deal with a 3+ cover save.

When I play against one, I just try and deal with other things I can take care of, and then, near end of the game, go after it if possible.

The easiest way to deal with it is something that ignores cover and maybe armor saves. Aside from that, deep striking behind it and/or reaching melee tends to put it out of commission.

Vector striking it works as well, but really you're just better off not even shooting it unless you can get a line to the techmarine so he takes the hits.

Whoops. I misread the rulebook on page 46.
Nope, you cannot LoS to the gun.

Well, it couldn't LoS anyway -- the techmarine in a Thunderfire Cannon unit isn't a character.

Killed one round 2 with my stormboyz on the charge. Before that it took out 19 boyz in a barrage, that cannon is brutal on foot soldiers.

Last weekend I had someone deep strike a LotD next to my gun. 3 melta shots ended it pretty quick.

I know this is true of the barrage shots. But the TFC also has the option to direct-fire? In that case it can target any floor as long as it has line-of-sight, right?

No. The only difference LoS makes is if you subtract your BS or not. It's still a Barrage shot and Barrage can only hit the top floor.

I think I'd drop pod an Ironclad Dread next to it, shoot its meltagun and HK missiles, and charge next turn if it still stands. ^^

So they are T7 with a 3+ save, usually sitting in 3+ or 4+ cover.
They can put the Techmarine up front, in which case you are hitting T7 2+ save(but then if the techmarine dies, the cannon is useless)

DE posion is great. A single venom has a good chance of killing one

Massed autocannons are ok at knocking them down

FMC or Heldrakes can VS, although you need to make sure that the cannon is the closest model(otherwise the hits bounce off the techmarine)

Vector Strike is random allocation (BRB FAQ).

Interestingly enough, the 3+ armor save with 2 wounds is just as durable vs weapons that provide cover/armor saves as 1 wound at a 2+ save.

Therefore, if your sitting in a ruin and rocking a 3+ cover save stick your cannon in front.

obviously, but if you are only in 4+ cover or somehow worse, or if you are facing AP3 ignore cover weaponry, then the techmarine might need to sacrifice himself.
