Plenty of guys here are painting just for the heck of it. But I'm interested in people who are trying to build an army and finish some time before the heat death of the universe. When I originally started, I was intent on actually playing Warhammer, not painthammer. But I got heavily caught up in trying to create really pretty models.
Anyways, a year later I think I've hit my stride - I understand the techniques that work for me, I know my tools etc. It seems like my effective throughput is about 1 box / month. Tactical marines, dreadnought, what have you. 1 / month seems like a reasonable long term goal.
So I'm curious what kind of numbers other people aim for. 1 box / month? 2? Less? I guess I would also stipulate : "when you are in painting mode". Obviously, we all take breaks where we might get nothing done for many months. But when we're in the groove and producing - what are we looking at?

I like to paint a 10 man squad to tabletop + in about a week. then I move on. but I am often going back to add detail, extra highlight, you name it , to improve them. however, If I want to know something off in one go, like a vehicle , or a 5 man squad with 40mm bases, I give it an 11 hour painting lockdown.

I wish I could churn models out even moderately quickly. Describing my progress as glacial would be generous at this point.

About 3 models a year for me it seems. Want to change that though.

I'm not exactly painting armies as most of my projects are for skirmish games (Judge Dredd and Empire of the Dead right now) but I would say I tend to get a gang and a half a month done where a gang is about 8 figures. It's a similar pace to an army though as I'm trying to clear one project/ kickstarter (or most of it) before switching.
So far this year I've done 116 figures - 8 for 1938 (a hold over from 2012's projects), 105 Judge Dredd and just switched to Empire of the Dead - 3 figures done this week.
All bar the 1938 figures have been pinned to sculpted resin bases which probably slows the process a touch vs my usual sand, paint, static grass version.

Well, it took me a week to paint a russ, and it's been three days since I started my Dkok commissar...so I'd guess about 1-5 models a week, depending on what they are etc.

I've managed 41 figures or so this year, about 1 a week. Not good.

I did my Tyranid Army in about 10 long working days, including the preparation of the models and moulding 67 resin bases for the Termagants. I did most of it over long bank holiday weekends, in three surges for the Platinum Devil events a few years ago.
I used a lot of spray paints, and QuickShade, and I aimed for "tabletop" standard results.

I ought to update the article to add the units that aren't shown. The whole army has 12 Warriors including a Prime, 3 Raveners, a Tervigon, a Tyrannofex, 66.6 Termagants, 2 Venomthropes, 3 Zoanthropes, 2 Hive Guard and 2 Trygons.
