I bought a copy of the SoB codex when it came out, sent a copy of the .mobi file to my Kindle (app), and was promptly blown away with how amazingly... awful the formatting was. I had read that they had problems, but I wasn't prepared for how unrelently ugly the thing was. I tried formatting it as a .pdf but that just retained the disappointing appearance. I've yet to open up the .epub file yet (I haven't gotten around to downloading something that can read .epub instead of .mobi), but I expect to be disappointed.

I was wondering if anyone had come across a relatively easy method to adjust the formatting to something decent. Right now my only thought is to take the .pdf and start hacking at it with Acrobat Pro (I have no idea how well that will work since I have no idea what I'm doing, but hey, I have a copy of the software through school so why the hell not?)

I wanted to get mine printed but as you say, the epub version is awful in terms of layout, font size, unnecessary artwork that I didn't want to pay for etc etc. I ended up using an online converter to convert it to PDF and then used Acrobat to chop out the pages/text/artwork that I didn't want and to shrink the white space and reduce page count. It still cost me £7 to get printed and bound but better than the £20 or £30 they estimated to print the original epub version.

Not everyone has Acrobat however so something Legoburner suggested to me was to use a program called Calibre to convert it to RTF - you can then use Word or OpenOffice Writer to mess with it.

I can second Calibre as being blessed by the Emperor as a fantastic tool for dealing with/editing most ebook formats

Yeah, I used Calibre to convert and then hacked it up in order to print it. That was disappointing, but I sorted it out.

Harrass GW custom service until they hire a pro and sell a working product. They asked 26 € for this crap, and as it is not called a kit, you shouldn't have to assemble it for hours to make it acceptable.

Like you I am not impressed with how the digital codexes are laid out. They could so easily reorganize the information to make it much easier to locate relevant information. Of course, I'm not thrilled with how the regular codexes are laid out either. The current ones were simultaneously a step forward and a step backward IMHO.

I wish they'd hire someone with layout skills.

I have a suggestion for GW!

Take your digital codex to the Printer and have him print out a few thousand copies on nice heavy paper, bind them up in a nice stitched spine with a sturdy cover and sell your bloody books properly.

Digital my ass...
