Two thousand mice dropped on Guam by parachute — to kill snakes
A brown tree snake on Andersen Air Force Base on the island of Guam in February.
By M. Alex Johnson, Staff Writer, NBC News
They floated down from the sky Sunday — 2,000 mice, wafting on tiny cardboard parachutes over Andersen Air Force Base in the U.S. territory of Guam.
But the rodent commandos didn't know they were on a mission: to help eradicate the brown tree snake, an invasive species that has caused millions of dollars in wildlife and commercial losses since it arrived a few decades ago.
That's because they were dead. And pumped full of painkillers.
The unlikely invasion was the fourth and biggest rodent air assault so far, part of an $8 million U.S. program approved in February to eradicate the snakes and save the exotic native birds that are their snack food.
"Every time there is a technique that is tested and shows promise, we jump on that bandwagon and promote it and help out and facilitate its implementation," Tino Aguon, acting chief of the U.S. Agriculture Deprtment's wildlife resources office for Guam, told NBC station KUAM of Hagatna.
It's not just birds the government is trying to protect. It's also money.
Andersen, like other large industrial complexes on the Western Pacific island, is regularly bedeviled by power failures caused when the snakes wriggle their way into electric substations — an average of 80 a year, costing as much as $4 million in annual repair costs and lost productivity, the Interior Department estimated in 2005.
The U.S. has tried lots of ways to eliminate the snakes, which it says likely arrived in an inadequately inspected cargo shipment sometime in the 1950s.
Snake traps, snake-sniffing dogs and snake-hunting inspectors have all helped control the population, but the snakes have proved especially hardy and now infest the entire island. Guam is home to an estimated 2 million of the reptiles, which in some areas reach a density of 13,000 per square mile — more concentrated than even in the Amazonian rainforests, the government says.
But brown tree snakes have an Achilles' heel: Tylenol.
For some reason, the snakes are almost uniquely sensitive to acetaminophen, the active ingredient in the ubiquitous over-the-counter painkiller. If you can get a tree snake to eat just 80 milligrams, you can kill it. That's only about one-sixth of a standard pill — pigs, dogs and other similarly sized animals would have to eat about 500 of them to get into any trouble.
Brown tree snakes also love mice. It's easy to bait mice with acetaminophen, but how do you then deliver the mice to the snakes?
"The process is quite simple," Dan Vice, the Agriculture Department's assistant supervisory wildlife biologist for Guam, told KUAM.
Helicopters make low-altitude flights over the base's forested areas, dropping their furry bundles on a timed sequence. Each mouse is laced with the deadly microdose of acetaminophen and strung up to two pieces of cardboard and green tissue paper.
"The cardboard is heavier than the tissue paper and opens up in an inverted horseshoe," Vice said. "It then floats down and ultimately hangs up in the forest canopy. Once it's hung in the forest canopy, snakes have an opportunity to consume the bait."
Wildlife workers do have a way to chart how well the mice work. In addition to the acetaminophen and the parachutes, some of the poison pests also come equipped with tiny data-transmitting radios.

I for one don't know they didn't simply unleash wave after wave of Chinese needle snakes.

My solution would be to send in the para-mongoose commandos, but hey, whatever works. I don't really see how 2,000 tylenol laced rodents are going to help combat a population of 2 million... Also, didn't think snakes were really into the whole scavenger seen, thought they only went after live meals.

That is actually sort of a grey area currently. Many snakes will not scavenge, but it does work for this specific variety.

Well, at least they're trying to be productive, but I don't see how 2,000 rodents can do anything significant to a population of 2 million snakes.

What happens when other creautures eat the poison mice? Like, I dunno...birds, insects, other reptiles and carniverous animals... This seems like a solution that could do more harm than good.

I think it's only "poisonous" to the snakes. Other animals would probably just lose any headaches they might have.

That still has the unpleasant side effect of introducing painkillers into the food chain, which will get ever more concentrated as you go higher up the chain. I wonder how the natives/locals will feel about their local ecosystem and food supply being laced with painkillers.
I predict there'll be unforseen consequences. Maybe some other species will also be adversely affected. Or the natives will get iffy about their ecosystem and food being laced with chemicals and kick off about it.

Thats not how food chains work...A contaminent will only become diluted if it can be broken down. If its a chemical that does not break down, like Mercury, then it gets passed on and becomes even more concentrated with every step in the food chain.
Larger animals consume several smaller animals that have been contaminated by eating yet smaller animals. They're effectively collecting the contaminent and concentrating it, by catching and eating lots of the contaminated prey. Eventually, the larger the animal is (i.e. apex predators) the higher the concentration of contaminent. It gets passed up the food chain.
http://www.nrdc.org/health/effects/mercury/sushi.asp
Guide to Mercury in Sushi
Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant should be especially careful about eating sushi. Many of the fish chosen for sushi are the apex predators of the fish food chain, which means they can bear high concentrations of mercury. The following list highlights sushi choices highest and lowest in mercury.
http://www.nrdc.org/health/effects/mercury/effects.asp
Once mercury enters a waterway, naturally occurring bacteria absorb it and convert it to a form called methyl mercury. This transition is particularly significant for humans, who absorb methyl mercury easily and are especially vulnerable to its effects.
Mercury then works its way up the food chain as large fish consume contaminated smaller fish. Instead of dissolving or breaking down, mercury accumulates at ever-increasing levels. Predatory fish such as large tuna, swordfish, shark and mackerel can have mercury concentrations in their bodies that are 10,000 times higher than those of their surrounding habitat.
The effect will likely vary depending on the chemical in question. Some chemicals might break down faster than others, and so less of it will be passed up the food chain. But if its a chemical that doesn't break down like Mercury, then it stays around for a long time, and becomes ever more concentrated as organisms consume large numbers of smaller contaminated prey.
A tuna fish might consume a load of mercury contaminated plankton, or small fish or whatever; and therefore consume X amount of mercury. And a shark or dolphin or whale might consume 100 tuna fish, and so consume 100X amount of Mercury.
The effect I'm referring to is known as Biomagnification.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biomagnification
Tl;dr..
Point is its a very bad idea to introduce large amounts of a chemical contaminent into a food chain without having first researched the possible side effects on the various organisms in that local ecosystem. I hope the people involved know what this painkiller ingredient will do to other animals. This sort of thing sounds like a desperate, last resort.

Yeah, pretty much this. It's all well and good to argue about Mercury, which is an inorganic chemical, but we're not talking about Mercury, we're talking about Tylenol.

I was responding to this comment,

which did not mention that Tylenol does breakdown. The remarks about Mercury was just to illustrate my point that some chemicals do become more concentrated.

Well, when informed that your reason for digging to China is incorrect, its time to stop digging to China.
