Since most Ork players take a big mek, unlocking a deff dread as a troop choice, I was wondering which would be more durable/effective for sitting on a backfield objective all game while the rest of the army rushes the enemy. A cheap ten man grot unit that can die to small arms fire, or a deff dread with only 3hp but cant be touched by most infantry basic weapons? I mostly play against IG, GK, and SW if this changes anything.

Small arms fire is only a threat from an enemy that gets back there, and hopefully they will have to deal with the rest of your army first. I like the grots more, you wouldn't have to worry as much about long range las cannon fire or some such. A squadron of Vendettas might be hard on the ol' deff dredd. I dont know wha he's got for AV but I would take grots unless your playing against SW, they could pod next to your Objective and blast you.

If you spread them out so barrages and large blasts are less effective, it could still work against ML long fangs an the IG Tanks.

As a deff dread can is not a scoring unit the grots would be the better choice in this capacity.

If you take a Big Mek it lets you take a deff dread as a troops choice therefore making it scoring.

Vehicles aren't scoring, even if they're troops.

I think the grots would be better. Especially in area terrain.

If dreads were scoring i'd probably dig my orks out for some games, love the models, but vehicles are almost never scoring, save for the scouring, big guns never tire and i think a warlord traits makes your hq scoring even if in a vehicle?? maybe wrong on that one, someone wiser confirm?

No, it allows you to take it as a troops choice, but it's not scoring.

Grots, primarily as my girlfriend painted them and she will be upset if they're not used...
Also, Orks shouldn't be worried about their deployment zone objectives, you should be going for the enemy ones!!

Yep, it's on the right hand side of the warlord traits table, number 5 I think. Shame the only HQ vehicle the Orks get is a Mega-Dread, and I don't think it can be a warlord. Huh, actually, I got a question. Since vehicles all count as having Ld 10, wouldn't that make any vehicle HQ automatically your warlord, unless you have another Ld 10 model? That would actually suck, because a lot of the warlord traits, such as furious charge in the enemy's deployment zone, would be completely useless
