So this is my first post on Dakka in a loooooong time, since I got out of the hobby for a while. I've been getting in a ton of games and relearning 6th edition. My LGS is semi-competitive, with some really good players but mostly just people looking to have a good time and throw some dice around. Now, I've always been a big fan of super expensive close combat death stars. It's kinda my thing. But I'm also a fan of winning, and big expensive complex units seem to be the thing nowadays. So I built this list to be competitive enough to win far more games than I lose, but not so much to be super cut-throat and WAAC. Here it is.

Primary Detachment: BA

HQ
-Dante- 225 points

Elites
-Sanguinary Priest- 90 points
Jump Pack
Power Weapon

Troops
-10x Assault Marines- 225 points
2x Melta Gun
Power Axe

-10x Assault Marines- 225 points
2x Melta Gun
Power Axe

-Sanguinary Guard- 250 points
3x Swords
2x Axes
2x Infernus Pistols
Chapter Banner

Fast Attack
-Baal Predator- 145 points
Assault Cannon
Heavy Bolter Sponsons

-Baal Predator- 145 points
Assault Cannon
Heavy Bolter Sponsons

Heavy Support
-Stormraven Gunship- 230 points
TL Lascannon
TL Multi Melta
Hurricane Bolter Sponsons

Allied Detachment: SM (Iron Hands)

HQ
-Chapter Master- 245 points
Artificer Armor
Relic Blade
Jump Pack
Shield Eternal
Auspex

Troops
-5x Scouts- 70 points
Camo Cloaks
Sniper Rifles

So the general idea is Dante, the priest, and the chapter master go with the sanguinary guard to form a close combat deathstar. The master tanks all the str8+ wounds, and with careful positioning Dante can take the small arms fire with his 2+/5+fnp. In addition to it's durability, the unit has enough AP2 to cut through terminators, some initiative 5 and 6 strikes (Dante does have a pistol, if you need it), 3 melta weapons, hit and run to avoid getting bogged down in bad combats (that's the big one), and the ability to deep strike without error if you need them to. To support the blood-star, i've got 2 fast moving and durable scoring units, one more back field scoring unit, and 3 sources of mobile firepower that are capable of engaging a variety of targets.

So what do you fellow dakka-ites think of this list?

the one problem is that the sang guard are terminator price for no invuln. anything ap2 is going to wreck your sangs. (MCs come to mind) also anything str 8 will ID dante, and the sang guard allowing no FnP. just so you are aware of this.

also, drop the relic blade, take a TH, or better yet, the burning blade.

The baal preds should be dropped, imo, you just giving something for this lascannons to shoot at and make up points (they will die.) use them for other things, either for a dev squad, or imo, a terminator squad w/ corbulo, or a sternguard squad. I have tried and tested both, and both work AMAZINGLY. (made an eldar player w/ WS spam VERY mad when it took 2 turns of shooting to even put one wound on corbulo! lol)

The Sternguard are a thought, but I've run the list with double squads of devastators. I have 2 separate chapter masters, one with a relic blade and the other with a power fist, Honestly, the squad packs enough AP2 that I'd rather have the initiative 5 str6 attacks, and not taking the shield eternal is a mistake.

As for the Sanguinary guard having FNP denied, things like power axes, rending attacks, most MC attacks and plasma no longer deny FNP, Furthermore, with the new rules to how independent characters work in combat, Dante never has to go near a power fist. Plus it's not like they can challenge him, seeing as the Chapter Master can just accept the challenge for him.

Finally, since wounds are continuously allocated to the nearest model, careful placement of the chapter master (with his 2+/3++ 6+fnp and IWND) means that he tanks melta and lascannon wounds all day, while passing plasma/small arms fire off onto Dante if need be. The squad is incredibly durable.

The problem with the Devs (and the reason im running Baal Preds) is the lack of mobility. With the notable exception of the Scouts, everything in this army can move 12 inches a turn and retain effectiveness. It's exceptionally mobile, and even the scouts have options with infiltrate, scout, and outflanking. I think you need to rethink how you look at the sanguinary guard unit. They're a lot more durable than you give them credit for.

Its not that they are not -durable- you just have to dump lots of points into them for it. that being said I LOVE my sang gaurd, the models are amazing. but in CC, he can apply any ap2 too your sang guard models on his turn. 5+ will only do so much

why do you think oyu have to take shield eternal or burning blade? the limit is 1 of each relic. you can totally have a burning blade + shield eternal CM. (hell, I have seen them w/ BB, SE, AND a primarch wrath just cuz)

I actually prefer a small bit of my army to sit back. This way, if things go poorly on the assault front, they still have to actually GET to the back field units.

O.o I thought it was a 1 relic limit. Huh. Well that's... interesting.

And would allocation in close combat works about the same way. Rules are funny like that *rolls eyes*

yes, BUT, if all models are all equally close to the base, then the player whos turn it is decided where they are allocated. (at least, this how we played it at my place)

and yes, its just like the CSM artefacts.
