The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all
We love our superheroes because they refuse to give up on us. We can analyze them out of existence, kill them, ban them, mock them, and still they return, patiently reminding us of who we are and what we wish we could be.

Really, I for one wish this one to succeed. We really need a Space Opera that borrows from current sci-fi lit instead of just rehashing the old Golden Age cliches.
Maybe I'm assuming too much, though. What little we know of the plot looks like The Culture goes to Barsoom...
War does not determine who is right - only who is left.

it would be nice to see something where Sean Bean doesn't die in it. he's died like 127 times.

Hmmm something is going on here.....Oh.... it seems there is some dispute over video taping of some sort......Frazz is really upset now..........wait a minute......whats he go there.......is it? Can it be?....Frazz has just unleashed his hidden weiner dog from his mini bag, while quoting shakespeares "Let slip the dogs the war!!" GG

Captain Killhammer McFighterson stared down at the surface of Earth from his high vantage point on the bridge of Starship Facemelter. Something ominous was looming on the surface. He could see a great shadow looming just underneath the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, slowly spreading northward. "That can't be good..." he muttered to himself while rubbing the super manly stubble on his chin with one hand. "But... on the other hand..." he looked at his shiny new bionic murder-arm. "This could be the perfect chance for that promotion." A perfect roundhouse kick slammed the ship's throttle into full gear. Soon orange jets of superheated plasma were visible from the space-windshield as Facemelter reentered the atmosphere at breakneck speed.

Is it a dystopian future in which people have their freedoms curtailed by an oppressive regime which can only be defeated by hip counter-culture heroes who embrace secret lives that value personal freedom over personal security, ultimately leading to the anarchic downfall of society with the vague promise of a "better" tomorrow?
You know, the Wachowski's usual order?

So that's the sub-text of Speed Racer.

Just because they aren't big names doesn't mean its necessarily a bad cast. Mid-level names are probably the route to go with this sort of film because if it's great it can help them out in the rest of their careers, but if it flops, it doesn't really hurt them either.

Looks like standard Wachowski fare. Their movies might be a little heavy-handed with the insufferable political subtext, but they're usually pretty good. I'll probably go see it.

Agreed.
Outside of the niche video game and table top games scifi/space opera sucks in the book/novel and movie department. Elysium was the only ok movie that I saw as of late in this genre. It wasn't great but wasn't terrible.
District 9 was the last great scifi movie I saw.
Seems like most movies obsess over SE, the tech and how it works.
And typical lame ass uniforms.
Movies in general eat dead dog sheet.
Thank the gods for HBO and showtime.

You didn't enjoy Oblivion?
As for this trailer, it looks beautiful. We could use some space opera besides Star Wars. I'll definitely "acquire" it when the BluRay comes out and watch it here at home. I almost never go to the movies — tickets are about $20 here.
