So, there's a Mega Man board game started up over on Kickstarter.
I can't speak for game mechanics (they look kind of interesting) but honestly, the minis look pretty cool. Kind of similar to the Chibi minis we've seen from Sodapop and Impact.
Anyway, I figured people might want to talk about it. It looks like most of the updates are for backers only (which is a bummer). I hope that isn't a trend that stays.

I grabbed an early bird for this since I'm such a big Megaman fan. It hasn't impressed me yet but with five weeks to go I have plenty of time to watch and wait for the pot to sweeten.
I really want this to be awesome but if it ends up a flop then I have something else I pledged a dollar to last month that I can try to jump in on.

I'm not backing this since I still haven't received the last 2 KS I backed for anything involving Ninja Division. Which happen to be both relic knights and robotech, both of which are experiencing huge delays of 6+ months at least. In RK , it's even longer

I agree. Unless they change things up, this will be a wait until retail purchase for me (providing the game is any good).

They put Guts Man and Cut Man as stretch goals? Those are the two most iconic Mega Man 1 characters. This is an example of those stretch goals gone wild.

Wow. I'm not sure I've ever seen a more unappealing KS for something I like. I mean, the AvP one was way out of my price point, but I kept looking at those shiny sculpts at least.
-pseudo-co-op backstabbing
-players fighting other players, as the bad guys
-elimination
-"bonuses" that allow you to penalize other players
-poor punctuation (never bodes well for tight rules)
-lame models
-no original games from the company (only a bought and expanded system
-highly linear play
-"upgrade" to crappy pre-painted minis
...all lead to what I expect to be a poor play experience
-high price for extras
-granular, poor-looking, unexplained add ons
-backer-only updates
...sounds like a poor KS

It really does.
I mean, what is the total you'd have to pay to get everything?
It looks like a ton right now, and it is only going up.
Never underestimate the power of nostalgia though - a lot of 40-somethings who grew up on the original Mega Man series must be ready to shell out a lot for this...

Preeeeeeeetty sure Robotech popped that particular cherry.
I know all my 8-bit video game nostalgia money is earmarked for the not-Castlevania expansion for Super Dungeon Explore. And that money's all tied up in Robotech and my Catachan Contra squad (I'll never reach 30 red and 30 blue) for the foreseeable future.

I would have spent money on a Mega Man game before a Robotech one - but not at these prices!
Still, they are doing very well, so, they don't need my pledge, apparently!

Were you born after 1980? Please give me data that corroborates my pet theory!
Also, why is it okay for some tabletop companies to price-gouge the fans of a popular 80's license, but not for others? (Yes, this question is mostly about what you think it is. Mostly.)

I loved Megaman on the NES and SNES, but I'm in the same boat as you Bob; whatever interest this has caught is immediately diminished both by knowing ND is involved, and the simply unfortunate amount I've got tied up between a couple of campaigns, overdue and fresh alike. Wyrd's rpg is at least 6 months late, Robotech is tentatively 2-3 months late but could easily hit 6+ unless a minor miracle happens soon, and while it just finished, I don't even want to talk about what my friends and I popped into Flying Frog's campaign, but it was hot and spicy.

Born WELL before 1980!
But I will admit, it is odd that I didn't get into Robotech, as it was certainly something that I should have liked, 'back in the day".

So... you weren't a Heroquest fan?
To be fair, I expect every Kickstarter project to be delayed at least six months. The only one I ever got on time gave me some pretty sub standard product.
I'm honestly glad that Megaman minis are going to exist in the world. On the other hand, I'm upset that they think going pre-paints would be better in some way. The rest of the gameplay they described didn't sound either good or bad to me. I would probably prefer a co- op game- especially if the game play is longer. Player elimination is really for shorter games.

Yeah, this KS has a lot of things going against it.
*Ninja Division
*Grossly expensive base products
*Fake stretch goals as until CUTSMAN is in the base box, the game is not actually complete. Adding on things which are clearly designed to be part of the core means fake stretch goals.
*Unclear, and continuing unwillingness to clarify the difference between what is core and deluxe.
*42 Cents a card add-on packs which they claim are not needed to make the game 'complete' but apparently you can't play competitively without them.
Something doesn't smell right about this one, and the attitude of Jasco doesn't inspire confidence.
Also, some of the math doesn't add up.
60$ for Core game
80$ for core game + art + 15$ protoman, making the art 5$ filler no one wants.
130$ for Core game + Art + 15$ Protoman and Expansion... which means 50$ for 2 robot masters.
So now because EBs are gone, you will need 140$ + 30$ (six 5$ card packs + 2 Freebie card packs) to have what appears to be the core game and 8 robotmasters.
Nostalgia only goes so far... Let's see if they figure out how to let some impartial people playtest this game and give a review as 170$ is too much to gamble on bad gameplay.
And honestly, the figures are not that good. I want some of that concept art with dynamic poses and 'correct' body proportions replicated in dynamic cool ass figures. ice man shouldn't be Mega man tall, it is like they just reskinned the same 3D model for all these guys.

Was ready to become one, but nah, I'd say that one was more scary than bland. I was on that site in the first minute, ready to score some EB stuff if there was any... looked around for a minute after I saw there wasn't one, got spooked and stayed clear except for watching the great legal and forum antics.

The thing is, these are basically 'action figures'.
I would have loved for a line of Mega man Miniatures including all of the awesome little robo creeps they have. There is so much potential for a 'miniatures' game based upon Mega man, but this is clearly a card/board game with unimportant action figures which play almost no role in the actual game.

Added in to that is ND hasn't inspired a lot of confidence with RK or Robotech Tactics, not to mention that both are going to end up being really late, so...
...yeah, this one is easy to give a pass on, and wait for retail.

Ninja Division is helping with sculpts.
That does not inspire confidence.

Ok, so they're doing the sculpts and nothing else? That's kind of cool, actually. This Kickstarter is very unlikely to be delayed over the sculpts- the delays will be on the production end (which is true of every kickstarter, really).
That means that SDE people are doing the Megaman minis. They'll probably turn out nice, in that case. I know the people on this thread feel burned by them, but I'm kind of fond of their minis (I have quite a few from Sodapop). Still, shame about the pre-paints.
Sodapop has a solid rules system out in Super Dungeon Explore, and some nice minis (honestly, so are the Relic Knights rules and minis- we just don't have the KS ones in our hands yet). But their projections for street dates are always off (Super Dungeon Explore expansions always come out late).
I hope the backlash for Relic Knights being late doesn't hurt the community too much. At least from the beta stuff that I've played, I really like it (minis and rules).
I watched the Wrath of Kings campaign and figured that these people were informed by the RK troubles. Ultimately, they weren't making very many sculpts (their stretch goals overloaded backers with more copies of the existing sculpts instead).
I think the same thing happened to Sedition Wars (the first wave came out quick, the second wave was way late and included tons of new characters they had added as stretch goals).
So- just add about six to nine months to their delivery date, and you should be good.

A lot of the (initial) Relic Knights delays were from Soda Pop not getting the sculpts to the factory in time so missing their production slot (that said it was a lot of sculpts to get done)
so while they're offering stuff as sculpts/renders you're not too badly off if they start offering art you're probably going to see slippage
Cyper (Hell Dorado) are also involved in Ninja Division and they are 4 1/2 months late of their KS, although the boat with their stuff has just hit US customs

That's not a very good trend there, concerning Ninja Division stuff.
I guess forewarned is forearmed though - just know that if ND is involved it means about an additional 6 months to the delivery date?

I find it really frustrating how many KS campaigns set unrealistic delivery targets, and/or fail to adjust them to account for significant project expansion.
Projecting that delivery might take 12 months might not draw in the backers like a super optimistic 6-9 month window does, but it'd be a hell of a lot less frustrating than constantly seeing massive delays become not only a regular occurrence but the outright expected norm.
Like, to the point that other backers get all huffy when you dare expect a project to adhere even vaguely to that timeline, and/or at least communicate what has gone so wrong that they need another 50%+ added to it.
If I tell my boss it's going to take 2 weeks to complete a project and it takes 3, he's going to want a damned fine reason for that. Doubly so if I followed up with saying I could probably do it in 10 days. Which is a less than subtle shot at campaigns who have ended up doubling down on the crazy by tempting fate and declaring a likely early delivery for X, Y and Z reason.
Yes, Wyrd and Palladium, I'm looking at you.
