Sounds fun mate.

I have rolled many when I was a kid.

Playing as a fighter/theif atm. I always prefer rogue classes but they tend to get murdered pretty quickly in BG.

You are too kind. And you are just throwing fuel on the fire of " I'm never gonna not dip again". I have to agree that I like the strain. And the effort involved is quite agreeable. Maybe this is a case of paint smarter not harder... if or until I can paint minis by hand without dipping a lot better than the last things have turned out... no point in not dipping.

And its not like dipping precludes highlights or shading either' its just a buttery smooth dirty black wash and I've always liked a good black wash

Try out the Army Painter "ink" washes
http://taleofpainters.blogspot.com.au/2013/08/review-army-painter-warpaints.html

I know people swore blind and blue by Devlan Mud as a "magic wash" but it was discontinued before I'd really used it for much. What I can tell you is that the AP washes (strong, dark and soft) tones are excellent for zombies, and give a lot more control than dipping. The coloured ones are also pretty good as well. I really give my strongest recommendation to you to buy the set and give them a go. I used them - both "straight" and diluted on the zombies I've done recently, and the results have been pretty decent.

Which isn't to say never dip again (and you made "Careless Whisper" by George Michael pop into my head with that phrase above - ya bastard!) but try out the AP inks, because I'd love to see what you end up doing with them.

May have to give them a shot. I've still got some oop gw washes and one or two from reaper. And the twelve minitaire ghost tints.... though I think those are more like glazes.

What's nice about the Tudor is that it isn't really overpowering, if I did some other colored washing before applying it, they should still show up for the most part. I also like the tough as nails application of poly whatever, combined with theflat coat that follows... hard to scratch.

I will consider these AP inks though. For sure.

@Carlos I prefer sneaky characters as well. Get those cheetah boots and your thief can use hit and fade tactics all day long and pick groups apart with his sneak attacks.

Phew. Feels like I got a lot done today too. I think I still owe you guys finished shots of the enforcer and forge fathers right? I'll try to get to those tonight. I love updating, but when I can actually generate things to update about... usually that comes first

I tentatively finished my moderator. Just did bits and pieces in between other stuff today. Did do some highlighting and what not, some minimal freehand. simple stuff, but more than I've been doing on these last guys for sure. Dip still made him look even better, whoo! This may be one of those models I go back to after the dip, do some touch ups or correct some obscured details or the like. I think he's pretty close though. Gonna let him sit all night, at least till after baby is asleep again, before I seal. Then I get to see if that epoxy I got with my bases works or not

I also got some colors down on big mech. I was just going to put white down in spots that I wanted to add in bright colors, but screw it, why not actually use my fancy detail airbrush for fancy detail work So he's still mostly black, but he's got a blue cockpit. Still gonna handle anything fancy on that by hand, but I probably won't do too much as blending and glass have never been my strong suits. And he's got some red accent panels. Really not a whole lot to do, make some bits metallic, and highlight all of the black. It's down to him and that Reverend Moira on the painting queue, so one of them may see some attention later tonight.

I get nervous when I make too much progress in a short time frame, so I'm gonna take a video game break and get something to eat. I'll try to get some pictures for later tonight too. Oh yeah, got my regiment tray/ multibase done too. Or well, I got the skeletons glued back down. I'll put it here and see what you guys think, not sure if I should start adding static grass and clump foliage, or if it needs some more paint first.

Till next time, Happy Hobbying!

Also just ordered one of those merkava tanks Azazelx and I (and others) have been talking about. Dropped $27 on it on amazon, but that was with my 2 day prime, and I think it's the kind that has the little motor. So... paid a good ten dollars or better more than I could have, but I'll get it Wednesday instead of early-middle next month. Gonna paint it up and give it to my father in law. He's more of a civil/ww# buff, but I still think he likes tanks in general. I'll have to shotgun this thing to get it done by the 19th if I'm getting it on the 12th or so, but I'll try to take lots of pictures of it with regards to my current scifi mini projects in scale. Will probably wait to order tanks from warpath kickstarter, but this quick project will let me (and you guys) have a better idea of if this would be a good fall back position

Gah, was going to take pictures, even had time. Phone is being stupid and sluggish though and the couple I did take are pretty fail. Thing is rebelling =/

I think the Moderator looks pretty good after the dip. Gonna go ahead and seal him. Maybe base too, but I'm not sure I want to tangle with that epoxy tonight. He does have a pretty wide feet that are both in contact with the ground, almost a rarity when considering the range, so it might not be too bad.

Big mech conversion is ready for brush work, just gotta get the motivation. The bulk of the work is trying to sort out a nice glass effect for the cockpit/face and then pretty much just edge highlighting, and a little gun metal here and there.

Still not much of a shot, need some individuals of the newest models. But still, it's something.

I still owe you shots of my moderator, and the skeleton regiment assembled for your consideration.

Here's my moderator, the collage and then a spoiler of the full shots (including his pals marine and Samaritan).

I think he's definitely a step above my standard infantry. There are certainly some areas upon which I could improve, and I will probably try in bits and pieces as I go.

Some aesthetic choices:
I kept him pretty close to the studio scheme mostly because I think the stock scheme is pretty awesome. I used my own colors and switched things around here or there.

I wanted to do a little more free hand as I progressed through the Infinity models. I didn't even realize the studio moderator had a face tattoo until I was done with mine It's uhh.. there. It isn't great, but it's better than it could have been. Like his eyes, they're probably the best eyes I've done that small, but they still aren't great. The bands on his arm are a little shaky, but I'm happy enough with them to leave them alone and try something else on another mini. I added those little black bits to the bottom of his shirt/belt/armor in front 'cause they had them on the box guy and it looked good.

My OSL and gem effects have a LONG way to go. I think these are ok for now, but I'll be looking to improve as I go.

I figured most, if not all, moderators were pretty strong individualists. I think they're like special investigations/ SWAT more or less, and they live on a space ship with a *lot* of funky stuff going on like gene-mods and plastic surgeries and so on. Expect some odd skin tones and the like for future minis. This guy just got neon shoes and frosted tips

Spoiler:

Even as nice as the Infinity models are, you still find places that are a little weird. All along under this guy's rifle there's a big poofy part, I think it's just the chest plate but it's a bit too wide IMO. Don't get me wrong, it isn't nearly as bad as I've seen on some models (forge father steel warriors do this all over the place, its icky)

Tattoo is too thick, doesn't curve quite like I wanted it. Eyes are very beady, but they're soo tiny. Glad I did it though, will work on improving line control.

I like how the base gets along so well with both the play mat and the 3d terrain element.

Another potential boon of the clear acrylic bases.. they take dry erase markers pretty well (and it comes right off). This is a neon paint dry erase, but I think the theory is similar for all of them. Here, I've marked the front 180 degrees for LoS in games like Infinity. Two of the models also have a mini check (or a dot) which could potentially replace an activation counter. Hell, they may even do for marking wounds and aggression in deadzone. Will just have to see if markering the bases is more or less convenient than fishing out, placing, and moving counters.

I think this one may have the best lighting.

So there you have a bit chunkier of an update I still need to show you my skeletons, but I may as well wait to show the weaponized big mech till he's done, shouldn't be long now

I think he turned out great. Did you use any washes on the Moderator prior to dipping him? The neon pink shoes are a nice tough, too.

I noticed that my Alguaciles have that weird thing going on with their chests, too. I think in their cases it's actually supposed to be ammo packs attached to their jackets, so that's how I painted mine. They do look really strange though.

Dude, that moderator looks freakin' fantastic! You really went above and beyond with that model!

The colors look beautiful, his eyes and hair look hella impressive, the jeans look so perfectly highlighted, and those "sneakers", they just pop in a good-way. Pink + yellow looks damn nice and feels unique to that guy.

Freakin' fantastic job GD, imho one of your best work so far!

Ooooh thanks for stopping by you lovely people, I'm pretty happy with the moderator too, but there's always room for improvement Since you were all so kind to stop by, you get to see my "Big Steve" before his flat/gloss coats and base.

@Carlos, yes they would. I think a fair few DZ models would translate well into Infinity as well. I consider Infinity to be DZ's big brother rules wise, and it only fits that the models are at least marginally cross-compatible. Maybe even to the point of importing factions back and forth for Infinity-Lite and Deadzone-Heavy.

@Barzam, I think everything was either base coated or base with highlights. Sometimes when I'm doing things that would take two layers, I let it slide with just one, kind of a heavy wash over the white. I do that for the flesh on my strain necromorphs, not sure I did anything like that here.
I like the pink shoes, I'm gonna try to give every moderator at least one thing that stands out a bit.
The multi part moderator that also comes in the starter has a very similar pose, and he does have armor where I was talking about, but only about 1/3 as thick. I think it just has to do with the sculpting/tooling process, it's virtually invisible unless you know where to look.

@TDL you are far too kind I hope to keep up this standard as I move forward, but I'm not going to beat myself up over it if I only get close.

sorry bit blurry

I'll talk more about this guy later on when I've got him sealed and on his base. I'm reasonably happy with it, though I still want to do better on the glass.

Thanks . Its nice to take my time on something for a change. Although... he didn't really take all that long. I think leaving the white to be sorted by the Tudor saved a lot of time over how I was doing my corp marines... and it looks better to boot.

Gonna see how far I can get done on this Moira before that tank shows up tomorrow then its gameface time for that.

I'm not used to being out of prepped models... gotta get on that!

Skeleton regiment time. I'm actively seeking advice on what to do with the multibase next. Throw in some clump foliage and grass, then done? Mix up some sand+cheap paint and slather the whole of the surface with it? Do that last thing but sparingly? Thoughts in general?

I think the 14 total skeleton warriors fill out the space well enough.

Need to touch up the rising skeleton's gravestone (missed it outright!). You can see that it is taking me some work to get the free hand skull design down, I figure some necromancer daubs it on there with fresh blood before battle so getting it 'just so' isn't as necessary.

Here you can see a little bit of the sexy new GW technical paints. I used the Typhus Corrosion and Ryza Rust here and there on the metal bits. It's a pretty good combo, especially nice for quickly adding extra detail to a simpler project like this.

More decent shots of rust (axe, couple of swords, helmets).

Bit of rust and a decent-ish shield design.

Another decent batch of rust.

Any thoughts on the models themselves? Anything I should try for next time? I think I need to go in and pick out a few eyes I missed. Does the corrosion/rust effect add another layer of goodness? It's pretty easy and quick to do. Should I do it more heavily so it's more obvious at gaming distance?
What about the multibase? What can I do to drive it home?

Got the "Big Steve" his flat coat, now I just need to get him on a base and retouch the glass with gloss again. Probably right before I turn in tonight, so hopefully pictures tomorrow. It's kind of my birthday, but I've purposefully not planned anything so as to have a nice relaxing day I may put a little more effort in on that Reverend Moira if nothing is going on tomorrow, but once that tank comes in I'm gonna have to bust it to get it done in time.

Taking a break for what may prove to be a deadly combination... Baldur's Gate and power/fantasy metal I may not be back for a few days

Till next time folks, Happy Hobbying!

Thankee sir It seems like I either paint at a pretty solid clip, or I don't get anything done for weeks. I'll let you ponder as to which I prefer

Those skeletons look fantastic, that shield symbol really makes them shine. A skeleton with a symbol painted in blood on his shield looks damn intimidating.

If you are getting into the weathering, you could try adding some browns around; IF they were buried and started rising from their "graves", well, they could still be dirty as heck with dirt, mud, plants, etc.

+1 Praise for the mech's glass.

I just had a read about the Merkava tank, its an interesting design idea. Do you have the option if the doors being able to open or are they fixed (ie. does it have interior detail)? Mainly talking about the rear "clam-shell" doors I have been reading about, they could be cool.

Show us some pictures when you are able.

What do you intend to do with the Merkava once you have it completed? Is it to be used on the Tabletop or is it going to be a display piece?

Yeah Israeli merkava tank. We were talking about them a few pages back. Its 1/48 which is about as close a scale to 28mm as they make. Its one of the most modern/SciFi looking tanks in existence IMO. Beyond the wheels the kit has very few pieces or articulation.

So obviously assembled. No glue. Kit didn't need any and I want to be able to get to the wires in case there's ever a problem. Should make painting a snap too. Gonna do a little color research during down time today and then I'll start painting. I foresee the airbrush doing most if the work. Will probably dip for durability.

Wonder if I should use the typhus ryza combo. Will have to see how long these have been in service and if there are any pics on the Internets of a rusty example.

More later.

Thanks

For this one, I'm going to stick pretty close to the box art and or what the internet shows me. Since it's a gift and all. Part of this project is to evaluate the kit for use as a modern/scifi tank, however. I may do some dry fitting of currently available scifi weapon systems and take some shots.

Mostly I'm gonna get it close to the right color, hit it with the Tudor stain to enhance that, then I'll probably rust it up a bit. Nothing crazy, but enough to make it look cooler. I'd do some dust but I don't have the right pigment and I'm not sure there will be time to get it.

If I like working with it enough, I may grab a couple. I think they're like 15-17 dollars from Korea (pretty sure that's where the Academy company lives) on eBay and one of my sisters gave me some kind of eBay gift card. May look around at some bits sellers too, but a tank or two wouldn't hurt. Of course, with warpath around the corner... May wait on them too.

Yeah when I get the chance I will. I'm particularly wondering if this is the same academy kit for 15-17 dollars on eBay with the motor thrown in or not. Will be back, though it may take a couple of hours pending how oppressive my toddler master is.

Sorry about mixed measurements, I went with whichever unit was actually on my tape's line instead of guessing

edit: I'm looking for a 40k Chimera/Russ stand in that would look good with the Sedition Wars guys. Worry not about clutter. Someday I'm going to make a handy index for all of the pertinent pages and plunk it down on the front page.

Hmm sedition wars seems too futury for the fancy yet still square merkava. Looking a Hurley I would expect hover technology and a similar aesthetic. Kinda tough.

The door placement is proper at least.. would be harder to use the merkava as, say, a razor back for instance.

Hrm. Actually... I wonder if making an article detailing all of my painted minis and projects.. then linking it in SIG and front page would be best? Then people come here to see stuff as it happens, article to gawk at everything, and article discussion thread maybe handles specific questions... hnm.
