@Dr H: good question...

on a battlesuit or something that big, i would definitely shade and highlight the pattern a bit...
Good point.

and good job on the rest of 'em.

thanks, guys

did you know that i paint miniatures???
yeah, it's been that long since I posted...

this Showgirl, Colette, was a test piece for a potential commission...
she was my first plastic Wyrd miniature...
i have to say, i am not a fan of the way that the plastics are cut for the sprue, nor the delicacy of the tiny parts...
the way that the seams of the joins need to be filled means that i have to fully assemble the mini before painting, rather than painting in parts, which is my preference...
while i do prefer this version of Colette over her original metal model, i'm glad i bought some of the others, like Perdita and Rasputina, before the metal models were replaced by their plastic sculpts...

i tried to add a bit of texture to the dress with a bit of pointillism...
this was one of my first experiments with this technique, back in February, just in time for Valentine's Day...
i have refined the technique since then, and look forward to sharing the results of the last two minis that i've tried it on...
if i had this mini to do over again, the main thing that i would change is the flame in her hand...
i would invert the colors of the purple fire, placing the white hot bit in the grooves, going darker toward the tip of the flame...
live and learn...

thanks for looking...
i hope you like her...

i am doing a much better job of the texture on the Skarre bust that i am finishing up right now, and really look forward to sharing her...

every once in a while, i get a commission to do something fresh, rather than another standard studio scheme Space Marine, or create a unique original conversion...
this time i got to do both!!!

this Sorcerer of Tzeentch is built from the legs of a Dark Angels Veteran, one of the Russian chests, helmet, backpack, and shoulder pad sets, the arms and power sword of a Raptor, the pistol of the GW Sorcerer, and the wings of a Scourge...

OK, the scheme is the standard for Thousand Sons, so i threw in some Beaten Purple and Arcane Blue to make it my own...
this was my first time trying to paint a flaming power sword...
it didn't come out as subtle as i would have liked, so i'll have to have another go at it soon...

i need to dig up the photos, and edit them up, but i took step-by-step pics of the wings for a brief tutorial...
it is only four very simple stages...
very gamer friendly

¡Por Fin! Although I must say I did not picture Colette in green. It works very well too, That is a nice job on the fabric look. Too many people are obsessed with 'smoothness' as if they want the mini to look like plastic. Bah. Texture is good. ( in the right places, and proportions.)

There are more showgirls too. They won't paint themselves.

I agree about the minis. Simply removing some of the parts from the sprue required neurosurgeon steady hands and nerves. CB's minis have spoiled me. Ah, first world problems.

Nice work, Jah.

Dress and wings are pretty.

That marine-y chap is almost more scary when he turns around.

I see what you were going for with the flames on the sword. It's worth following that up.

cheer, guys...
i was pleasantly surprised by the harmony of the P3 Beaten Purple and Arcane Blue on the wings

@Red Harvest: sadly, the Showgirls commission was canceled back in February, when the client got the test mini...
i guess my painting didn't live up to his expectations...

@Dr H: i did learn what not to do on this sword...
let's see if i can pull of what i imagined next time...

this Rubric Marine goes along with the Sorcerer that i posted on Monday...
he is part of a small warband for the Black Crusade RPG... every model in this group is a unique conversion, which was a fun challenge, especially the ones that involved a fair bit of work...
like the Sorcerer, this guy has a custom left-handed gun... none of the Chaos Marines come with guns in their left hand, but both of the swords that the customer wanted were right-handed...
luckily, the Sternguard kit comes with left-handed bolt pistols...
even though it was a pain in the ass, i cut the pistols off of the hands, and then pinned the hands into a Raptor arm, then finished it off by pinning the guns into the hands...

the parts in this conversion are taken from the Chaos Space Marine kit, the Raptor kit, and the Russian Thousand Sons set...
the jackal helmet from the Russian kit is one of my favorite pieces in the set.

this is my first time painting the T. Sons Rubric Marine scheme...
blue and gold is a nice harmonious scheme, and i threw in a little purple to tie him in with the Sorcerer that he protects... the badass chainsword from the Raptor kit has a cool demon face in it, so i gave it a glow to match that of the plasma gun and helmet lenses...

Another awesome model. The blue is really rich and compliments the golf well. The use of purple on the sword to compliment the pistol is a nice touch.

Everything on this page is awesome (and I too love Colette!). The only constructive criticism I'd have is on the sword of the sorcerer - you and Dr H already discussed it, but it seems like a very accessible part of the model to work on, and I think it needs something more. Right now the dark sword and pink lines don't blend at all - I think you need a purple base and then the pink lines on top of it. Any chance there's still time to adjust it?

Looking forward to seeing the rest of the warband . I'm thinking about playing some Kill Team myself, although I know that's not what these are for I love the idea of small scale rulesets using 40k models

@EDC: cheers, mate...
that is a plasma gun, rather than a plasma pistol, and this guy is one-handing it like a proper badass

@RiTides: thanks for the critique, dude...
i wish i did have the model to work on some more, but this guy was painted over six months ago...
i am just catching up on my old commission pics thanks to some serious Internet Malaise since February...
sadly, the photos are really letting me down on this one, as they pushed the contrast way higher than it is in hand...
even worse, they are making you see pink :(
only purple was used on the sword...

the kit bashing continues, with the third member of the Black Crusade warband...
this guy was a lot of fun to build, as i finally got to use the helmet and torso that i had been wanting to paint for the last fifteen years...
i am always so booked, that i often have to wait a long time to get around to the projects that i daydream about...
this guy was definitely one that i had been thinking of for years...

this guy was built using a Chaos Space Marine torso, helmet, legs, shoulder pads, and backpack from their basic kit...
one sword blade was taken from the same kit, while the other blade is from the Noise Marine upgrade kit, with the poison vials cut off...
the arms are from the Black Templars upgrade sprue...
he was finished off by cutting the tubes off of his torso, and gluing some fine chain across it instead...

it isn't often that a Sci-Fi model calls for two swords, but it is a really cool look...
the chains on the wrists are something that i always liked on the Black Templars, and fit the theme of this Marine who has turned to Chaos...

i used the same battered paint style that i did on the Ultramarines army, as it seemed really appropriate for this model...
i tried a new approach to painting the power swords on this guy, using fine lines to represent the glow, rather than a source lighting style...
it needs a bit more experimenting to refine the look, but i like the idea a lot...
i am a big fan of stylized painting, rather than realism...

thanks for looking...
i hope you like him...

@RiTides: this has been an imformative week about what other people are seeing on their monitors...
you saw pink on the Sorcerer, even though it is only shades of purple, and Red Harvest saw green on Colette, even though Coal Black is very blue...
frustrating, but good to know...

@EDC: cheers
next time i need to go with pure P3 Underbelly Blue for the final highlight on the swords, instead of adding the touch of Khador Red Base, so they shine even more...

time for something a little nasty...
the Sorcerer of Nurgle...
i'd wanted to paint this Forge World model since he was a new release, so it was a pleasure to finally find him in my commission queue...
getting to use one of the cool new Chaos Raptor jump packs was just an added bonus...

i was asked to give this guy a Rod of Corruption, a tail, the Plague Knife, and the jump pack...
it was a pretty straight forward conversion, just having to clip the weapon from his hand, turn it around, and pin the staff back together...
i hid the cuts by sculpting a leather band around the handle...
then I used the left-over blade for the Plague Knife on his hip...
nice how that worked out

for the paint job, i wanted to see how P3 Ordic Olive and Traitor Green would mix, and how that drab green would look with purple shading...
the P3 Murderous Magenta for the open sores stands out nicely from the green, and the black mummified flesh allows the magenta and green to take center stage...
both the armor, and the skin, are highlighted with P3 Thrall Flesh to tie them together...
hopefully i achieved an nice harmonious scheme, that does justice to Nurgle's imagery...

@TheLumberJack: on the Chaos Marines, i used the GW Technical paint, Nihilak Oxide...
for the Ultramarines earlier in the is thread, i used a mix of 2 parts P3 Iosan green and 1 part P3 Meredius Blue...
i'm still not sure which one i like better...
i guess it depends one whether i want a color that is more green, or more blue...

@lliu: thanks, bud...
nice to see you are still around...

finally, an Infinity mini!!!
it has been a few years since i got to paint one of these awesome sculpts...
being asked to paint one up as a female Dark Mechanicum Heretek for the Black Crusade warband just made things that much cooler...
as soon as my client told me what he wanted, i knew exactly which miniature I would use for the conversion...
this Nomads Reverend Custodier has a pose that is elegant, sexy, dangerous, and mechanical, all at the same time...
i love that she is plugging a data-feed into her head, while standing with her hip cocked...
the hooded coat has a very Matrix feel to it, too...

the brief was for a Heretek with a sacrificial dagger...
the original model comes with a sniper rifle, held loose at her hip...
the only bit of converting that i had to do was to clip the rifle away from her hand, and make a dagger using the handle of a Chaos Space Marine combat blade, and the blade from the Dark Eldar Kabalite accessories...

since the color of the Mechanicum is red, it was not hard to choose the scheme...
i knew i wanted a dark tone, so i used that on her armor...
the red of her coat is very basic, but the freehand fancies it up a bit...
the blade needed to be black, so i took the chance to spruce it up by trying my hand at a blood drop...
hopefully, the pose, and the drop, combine to give her a sense of motion and life...

thanks for looking...
i hope you like her...

@Ifurita: thanks, it is always nice to have my hard work be appreciated

this is it, the last member of the Black Crusade warband commission...
one of the Forge World Kakophani models, standing in for a Noise Marine...
these MKIV suits are so cool, and the minimal decoration is nice...

for this conversion, i added a Noise Marine Champion backpack, a Dark Eldar back banner, and a Blood Angels knife...

this was my first time painting purple power armor with P3 Murderous Magenta rather than Beaten Purple...
the different tone is very nice, without being too pink...
this is one of my new favorite colors, for sure...
the chance to do a snow leopard loincloth was too good to pass up...
too bad the gun covers most of it :(
