i'm doing a lot of experimenting with my metals all the time...
this works nicely for a super-clean look, but with a bit of flavor thanks to the blue tone...

alright, let's put this baby to bed, and get on to the things i have been working on for the first three months of this new years...

the final stage of painting the Grey Knights Terminator Librarian is all about the last highlights and fine details...

the blues are finished with a fine highlight of Arcane Blue...
the reds are finished with a tiny line of Khardic Flesh...
the gold is highlighted with a 2-1 mix of Vallejo Air Gold and V.A. Aluminium...
the parchments get detailed with thinned Thamar Black for the lettering...
the yellow is finished with a touch of Cygnus Yellow and Morrow White at 1-1...
the red lenses and gems get a fine line of pure Heartfire, and then a small dot of black up top, with n even finer white dot on top of that...
the blue glow is a simple progression through the P3 blues, all the way up to Arcane Blue and Morrow White at 1-5 for the lightest glowing spots...

i had a lot of fun working with the new plastic Termie Librarian model...
he is a worthy replacement of the classic metal one...
as a multi-part plastic kit, it was easy enough to clip the storm bolter off of the spare hand that comes in the kit, and turn it into a wrist-mounted GK version...
the blank shoulder pad is a seperate piece, so replacing it with a GK spare was easy-peazy...
two little changes to the kit, and he looks like he was made to be a GK Libby...

i took him to a local convention on Valentine's Day, and entered him in a painting contest...
i was lucky enough to take home 1st place in Sci-Fi Single, and the Best of Show!!!
now the new owner has an award winner on his shelf...

thanks for looking...
i hope you like him, and found the step-by-step interesting...

cheers

nearly three months without a post!!!
i've had a serious case of internet malaise...

i've been busy as hell, painting like a man possessed...
in the first five months of 2016, i've finished more minis than i normally do in an entire year...
it has been a lot of fun to try some new things, and push my painting to a new level...

here is a quick sneak peek at a few of the models i've finished in the last three months...

WIP shots and painting breakdowns should be a lot of fun to share and talk about
lots of catching up to do!!!

thanks for looking...
i hope you like them...

I like them very much Jah! Welcome back! Great to see your current works. I love that little goblin and the great details on the fellow on the right. Particularly the texture on the raised areas of the cloak. And the base...I wouldn't complain if you posted a little tut on what went on there. Cheers!

@bebop: thanks, dude
i'll see how many stages i actually got pictures of during the painting process of the base...
the idea was to go for a Craftworld Mymeara Eldar temple look to the base...
i really like the blue to green fade of their color scheme...

@EDC: cheers, mate

Ulrik the Slayer...
what a brilliant re-imagining of a classic, iconic character...
i really like the "standing on a windswept cliff, overseeing the battlefield below" vibe to the pose...
very cool to see Ulrik's face for the first time, too
he is one grizzled looking dude...

this is the second round of pics, and they are still horrible :(
one more try, and maybe they will turn out better...

Is that freehand on the cloak or is it part of the mini? Looks great either way.

@EDC: the knotwork is sculpted into the cloak...
the crosshatch for texture is freehand...

@bebop: here is a better angle, from my first round of pics, that show off the colors of the base a bit more...

As much as I really am'nt a fan of the SWs, that fig is pretty damn sweet and your paintjob is really tasty; esp liking the skintones, rich cloak and that skull helm. Lovely job as ever Jah

Awesome paint job there joshua

My only critique is that GW should've kept the skull helmet on. Ulrik looks FAR MORE badass with it on. Don't get me wrong, he's sporting a mighty fine beard, but the skull helmet made the model the legend it is today.

Also, that GK librarian is all kinds of awesome. Well done

badass is badass, and you can't hate it, can you

@AoV: cheers, mate...
i really enjoyed the way a wee touch with the knife, and a shoulder swap has really made the Libby fit as a Grey Knight...
the new plastics are designed and cut so well, they have been a joy to work with...

i wouldn't have been angry about a helmeted version of Ulrik
luckily, the way the plastic mini is cut, it is easy enough to convert...

i've already seen it done on Facebook...

as soon as i saw this mini, i knew i had to paint it...
Forge World always makes the best Event Only models

i enjoy trying different TMM styles, and pushing my skills, to make things more visually interesting...
going for a reflection of earth on the downward facing surfaces, and the sky in the upward facing bits, seemed like a good thing to try out...
no better steel surface in the 30K setting to try this on than an Iron Warriors character

i've got loads of WIP pics that i need to edit up and share, because it was a really fun process to play with the metals and matte paints...

thanks for looking...
i hope you like him...

hey Dakka...

here is the Gobbo, finally!!!
this was a limited edition run of 125 a few years back, from Spyglass Miniatures...
i was stoked to get my hands on one

after he spent a few years languishing in my carrying case, hopping from country to country, the Dakka Monthly Painting Challenge theme came up as "Everyday Hero"...
that, plus the Bloodbowl teasers from the last Forge World event got me fired up to paint a Fantasy Football Goblin...

this was my first time using the P3 color Wurm Green...
in the pot, it didn't look like my kind of green, but it looks great on the mini, especially shaded with Sanguine Base...
Wurm Green mixes nicely with white, without going chalky, for the highlights, and Murderous Magenta worked well for the pink bits of skin...
paired with Meredius Blue, the scheme worked out quite nicely, i thought

the Elven helmet on the base is a Space Marine helmet carved up...
i hope i captured an Elven vibe with the lines i tried to create with my whittling

thanks for looking...
i hope you like him...

Your IW marine is suitably grimy! I always enjoy a 30K marine every once in a while. The BB Gobbo is equally well done with it's shades of purple and blue.

cheers, dudes...
i had a lot of fun painting the Gobbo...

i've still been slacking on my posts, but painting furiously every night, nonetheless...

since we are over halfway through the year already, i guess i should get caught up posting all of the commissions the i have finished in 2016...
January started out with a bunch of Sniper Scouts for the Strike Force Cassius Ultramarines army...

this kit is definitely showing it's age compared to the Storm Scouts, but since i had never painted Snipers before, i enjoyed the set...
getting to paint Telion, finally, was a real pleasure...
i'd been waiting to paint him since 2008...

i started with a little tester, to get the scheme down, since Scouts have more cloth than Marines...
it is just a variation on the exact same palette that i am using on the rest of the army...

once i had the test mini done, i got approval to do the rest in the same manner...

once i got a fair bit done on the rest of the squad, i had to tackle the camo cloaks...
a simple base coat of P3 Greatcoat Grey, a black wash, then some shapes from P3 Thamar Black, followed by P3 Underbelly Blue with a touch of GG to tone it down, and we have a simple (hopefully effective) urban camo...

with their bases done, the first squad is ready to hit the table...

next up is Telion, and the second squad...

thanks for looking...
i hope you like them...

cheers

Smashing job, Jah.

Are you one for typically shading/highlighting the "blobs" of a camo' pattern to match the shading on folded cloth, or do you have a different way? Something I'm always curious about.

cheers, guys

@Januine: P3 Exile Blue is a nice dark blue...
using a drop of P3 Blue Ink on my palette, rather than water, to dip my brush into as a thinner, makes the color nice and vibrant even though it is dark...

@EDC: i look forward to the chance to spend some time on a display quality mini using digital camo...
my Infinity SAS Trooper was a bit too small to really showcase the camo, and these guys were on too short a deadline :(

@Desubot: i really like trying out the difficult stuff

@Dr H: good question...
i think that the smaller the model is, the less need there is to shade and highlight camo patterns...
on tanks or planes, it works, but on a tiny guy, it looks too busy...
on a battlesuit or something that big, i would definitely shade and highlight the pattern a bit...

Sgt. Telion was a joy to finally paint...
love this sculpt
unfortunately, i didn't get to spend the time on him that i would have liked to, but the main concern for this client is always speed...

for the second 5-man unit, i wanted the customer to be able to combine them into a single 10-man unit if he wanted to...
so that he could easily single out which Sergeant and missile launcher guy would proxy as regular sniper rifle guys...
giving the missile launcher dude the kneeling legs was easy, since his torso isn't cloaked...
the sergeant needed a lot of cutting to make his torso fit on the "Tactical Rock" legs...
good conversions, to make a mini stand out, are always worth the effort, though...

i did a much better job on the digital camo the second time around...
a little practice goes a long way...

thanks for looking...
i hope you like them...
