After skimming through the new Cypher dataslate, I'm excited to field him with my Black Legion CSMs against my buddy's Dark Angels. A thought occurred to me, though - would it make sense from a flavour perspective if I used DA models for his Chosen squads? While I love the fluff for the DA, I'm not 100% certain if this would gel correctly. And if it would look right to the trained loremaster's eye, which models would be most fitting? I was thinking of the Veteran Squad, perhaps with some small conversions.

Because of the fluff I think both DA or Chaos models would be fine. Just pick them to match the idea you have of the narrative in your mind.

The DA should be modeled to look more ancient or fallen though.

DA veterans would work well enough imo.

In the 1st HH book it shows still loyalist Death Guard with what we now see as 'Chaos' backpacks.
These were originally a new pattern of backpack with improved stabilisers.
You could use these on your DA Chosen & can be ordered direct from GW.

Also, I would assume, Cypher has one or the other story to tell to any dark angel who would listen. Indoctrination and all, but I would assume he could make some "recent" DAs turn renegarde...

I think it would look odd. the "modern" dark angel heraldry and iconography has evolved over 10,000 years in line with the GRIMDARK after the heresy. If Cypher was using former DAs from the heresy they would be in Heresy era kit without all the new iconography.

Thanks for the opinions, all. I suppose indoctrination or trickery of newer DAs, or theft of their supplies, could rationalize the newer equipment. He'll be working with my Black Legion army, so more modern suits could come from them too, outfitted with heraldry from slain DAs.

I'd also paint them black not green!

I'm gonna do the same thing as you propose. I'm actually selling all of my CSM models but I'm holding on to Cypher and just gonna use my DA vets as chosen. All of them are in robes. I'm painting them DA green like the rest of my army cause I like the color. Even my Raven/Deathwing will be DA green.

I think it sounds great, as long as you make the story go along with however you do it! You could even throw in some mutations and stuff if you felt like it. But I agree, they should be painted black.

So you've basically got two options; repentant traitors in green like Dark Angels, or more mercenary/self-serving/chaotic traitors in black.

Given this, I think I'll do green for Cypher and his Chosen - especially since I've long claimed my Chaos Lord is a former DA who threw in with the Black Legion.
